    People tend to forget that it was just a year ago, that Hicks' national and team prospect rankings had nosedived and there were more than a few calls by bloggers and fans that Hicks was appearing to be a bust as others in the organization were leap-frogging him. Of course, we all know that no sooner was the ink dry on these prognostications that Hicks proceeded to prove them all wrong. Talk about forest for the trees evaluation, his numbers in 2012 were very reflective of his entire pro career. It takes time for him to adjust at each level- let's give it time before we indict him or the organization for his rate of development- he is who he is. An argument can be made that the Twins should have pushed him harder, sooner, faster, but they had Span on a cheap long-term deal so they were more than happy with Hicks' baby-step progression. Fast forwarding to 2013, to me, the Twins knew this was a punted season, so moves were made and Hicks is now learning on the job in preparation for 2014 or even 15, there could easily be some backtracking to AAA when he struggles. The Twins would be pleased either way- if he is the 2013 ROY- or if he finally begins fitting comfortably into a Twins uniform for good in a year or two, it happened with Hunter.

    Gotta think this is a reflection of the Ryan master plan. We might see some timetable acceleration and 2-step-in-a-year promotions organization-wide in preparation for the "new-look" Twins of 2014. Maybe this New Britain OF and MI will be completely turned over by sometime in July?

    Thanks, I was thinking that the Twins might just be extending their "quantity over quality" strategy into the minor leagues and regular season, but I wasn't sure, given all the recent pitcher health issues.

    Looks like dry wells everywhere in the OF at both AA and A+, mostly placeholders until the Cedar Rapids crew is ready to move up.

    Good call, my miss. If Thielbar can move up 3 steps in one season, Tonkin with much better stuff certainly can, too.

    18. 3 MLB Twins pitchers on the DL, 10 at Rochester and 5 at New Britain. Although it seems high, how much out of the ordinary is this number?

    Thankyou! I haven't had the time or inclination to get into this again, this early in the season.

    Of the 26? on the NB roster list, I see 5 guys that could fast track to AAA with breakout springs and/or organizational needs (Meyer, May, Pinto, Santana, Ortiz) and at least another 10 should be looking over their shoulders--- over at the DL- down at Ft Myers- and up at Roc.- for someone about to take their jobs away.

    The first wild pitch wasn't nearly as bad, but probably preventable by better fundamentals, particularly with a slow runner on base at the time. But Mauer was not alone out there in the failure to execute department by any means. IE, Florimon's drop on the SB attempt could have easily been scored an error. It looked like a team that might benefit from a 20 degree temperature increase.

    Excellent analysis. The very definition of a calcified organization. It's sad when Ryan makes disparaging comments about a local golden boy and Hall of Fame all-around good guy in Paul Molitor as being a "poor fit" and telling that 56 year old Gene Glynn is the only legitimate breath of fresh air in a stale organization that is currently on the short managerial replacement list.

    Joe Mauer =Wade Boggs as a slightly more powerful Catcher version? Joe will join Wade in the HOF, but both are not Cabrera, Hamilton or Pujols, they are low ISO- but yes, still HOF, tablesetters, therefore, by definition, much less dangerous. Wade Boggs- wOBA-.381/BABIP- .344/wRC+ 132/BB%- 13.1%/Singles/Hits 74.8%/OBP .415 Joe Mauer- wOBA- .377/ BABIP- .345/wRC+ 133/BB%- 12.2%/Singles/Hits 71.6%/OBP .405

    Refer back to potential value of Lawton who was having a great season following a pretty decent string of seasons- at the time of trade. Hopefully the Twins can be in a similar situation this year and do better than a 37 year old pitcher on his last legs.

    You make a strong case, it would take a lot in talent, and a lot of desperation for the Rangers to pull the trigger. The Rangers have Kinsler signed through 2017 and Andrus through 2018 (or longer by player option). Must be nice to have BOTH a 2B and SS who are either, still young and still climbing in the case of Andrus, or in their prime, in the case of Kinsler, AND are both consensus-projected to be about 4.4 WAR players in 2013, AND you have the #1 prospect in baseball who also happens to play the same positions.

    I'm with you on protecting the value of Mauer, long term. But- I would hope that if/when they do give up, Butera is not on the roster, Doumit is traded for something of value and guys like Herrmann and Pinto are getting the lion's share of catching reps going into August and the remainder.

    When you're at least willing to spend money to win championships, a dumb move or two won't kill you. And even in Delmon's case, the dumb move of acquiring him paid off in the playoffs, Young improbably has the record for the most Tiger post-season HRs.

    Did you glance at who the Twins are playing today? OK, Detroit is only better from 1-6, not 7.

    Give em time, they should be in the bottom quintile by as early as next season.

    Yup! As the season progresses, the Rangers are sure to be a team that will have key injuries to replace and /or holes to plug, in order to make a decent run to October 1. The Twins would be guilty of malpractice not to have their ducks in order if/when the Rangers come calling with Profar on the table (hopefully one of their young catchers would be thrown in as well- in a multi-player exchange- it would definitely hurt losing an Arcia, and maybe something else of higher prospect value, but this is the deal that at least gives the Twins a chance to accelerate the climb back to relevance). Oh, and pay the underage Cuban defector what it takes to get him, as well.

    Definitely not sure about Glynn long-term. I did say logical interim choice, especially if he continues to do well with the Red Wings. As with Kelly in 1986, if the players buy in as they apparently did at Rochester last season, the "Minnesota boy" (MN Mr Basketball 1975) just might be asked to stick around through the Twins bridge years.

    Yes. Most life-affirming and rejuvenative day of the year is finally upon us- frigid weather be damned! This has to be the one day that all of the divided camps on Twins Daily can come together and collectively regard as Sacrosanct.
