  1. It can't be based on last season because he definitely wasn't "dominant". Therefore, I guess in this instance, "domiant" is 11 ABs in the WBC and 23 in Spring Training. Who knew?
  2. Not to put words in Thrlos's mouth, the 200k is not the point. The other side of this argument is ignoring the fact that there were options to upgrade their depth at the position and if they wanted to keep Butera, they weren't competing with ANYONE, they easily could have offered him a minor league contract and if by some very strange happenstance that someone actually wanted him, SO WHAT!. It's time to start sending a clear message around the organization that a career performance 5 shades below mediocrity no longer merits a raise and a guaranteed valuable roster spot.
  3. (scratches chin)....Pondering using Thome in the 9th inning with the bases loaded or Butera....
  4. Agreed, but the rose-colored glasses set on Twins Daily are already optimistically enthusiastic about taking the battlingly effective Correia ERA "Under" at about 6.00.
  5. If you're truly thinking long-term, whether or not he doesn't play the first month is a triviality, not a travesty.
  6. Not to worry, Captain Buzzkill and First Mate Andy will tweak down his morose-o-meter and soon have him battlin like a lean, mean Mauer machine.
  7. But, but, what about the 40-man roster connundrum...? They might have to expose Swarzak or something..../s
  8. It's refreshing to see that the "professional" has finally discovered what most of this board's amateurs thought was obvious. Of course, he went on in similar fashion about "no scholarships" and wasted bench players previously, and at the first sign of a catcher with a twinge, Butera retook his place on the bench for the rest of the season...
  9. At this point, we seem to agree then that Herrmann projects to be a career back-up catcher/5th OF. Pinto is a little younger (a year and a half) and will have to show more behind the plate to match his projected above-average-to- decent MLB bat to qualify as a solid #1 catcher. I'd still feel better looking outside the organization.
  10. On my second cup of coffee, even calmer than when I first posted. Agree about ST meaning little in the long run, that's why I wrote that Hermann "certainly had a short-term setback." Can we agree that Hermann is an athletic, versatile player who became a catcher as a second position? Can we also agree that Hermann has achieved a slightly above modest .754 OPS in two years at AA? Further, has he demonstrated in his brief major league appearances that he has a way to go to master major league pitching? The Twins hedged their bets heavily on Hermann's arrival date by extending Doumit through 2014. Pinto is a very good-hitting catcher, who doesn't come with much reputation behind the plate. While it's exciting to have a potential toy cannon on the roster versus the likes of a Butera, it's probably important to note that Pinto DHd nearly half of his games played last year. I get that the Twins have made a major commitment to Pinto and Hermann. I would just hope that rather than making them the Designated-Duo-by-Default to the Mauer legacy, they at least consider the option of jump-starting by a couple years the return to legitimate contention by considering filling one of the catcher spots with a proven veteran, proven bat, a winner, willing field captain, and leader for all the young pitching talent about to hit the Majors. They certainly will have carved out the payroll space by the end of this season to do so.
  11. The earliest projection I've seen for Pinto is 2015. The value for Mauer goes up significantly with time spent at third and fills a spot that still remains in question. First base looks like it's going to have plenty of other options for players who have few other options to get themselves in the lineup.
  12. The announcers praised the umpire in the face of the obvious miscalls. "Mauer passed the word to his (new pitcher) about the 'generous' strike zone, and as Mauer himself found out, the (umpire) is consistently calling it both ways!" Yeah right, buddy, consistently bad.
  13. I didn't necessarily have a problem with signing Pelfrey. My main objection was that they couldn't get a team option 2nd year out of his agent. The first year back from TJ is usually pretty meh. And even assuming that Pelfrey starts out of the gate gangbusters, the chance that the Twins can trade him for value at the deadline is very slim. I like the Worley acquisition as well, young and with some personality and a chance to re-establish himself as a legit #3SP with a fanbase that has far more patience than Philadelphia.
  14. That might be a longer wait than Mauer's knees can handle. Hermann certainly had a short-term setback this spring and Pinto's been around for 7 years and still only in AA. Brian McCann is a free agent next year- with another $20M likely coming off the Twins payroll. The Twins love getting a cheap rehab reclamation project...
  15. This is great news and a break from the recent past. This certainly lays out a scenario for AA in 2014 and a chance to make his MLB debut sometime in 2015 at age 21, not 16. I now predict that the ridiculously-talented Kernels will break all previous attendance records in 2013. Calling Jim Crikket for verification on that attendance stat! And this stat, how well does the ball carry in CR and what's the HR record?
  16. If Harmon Killebrew and Miguel Cabrera (6'4" 240#) can play Third Base, why not Mauer?
  17. Lannan gets $200K for each 10 inning step above 150 innings, $250K for 200 and 210IP and $250K for each start above 30 to 34. Marcum's details haven't been officially disclosed, but are based on similar benchmarks of production.
  18. It could be argued that a move to First Base could possibly accelerate Sano's schedule, especially if Morneau is gone and Parmelee doesn't pan out. Sano could learn 1B on-the-job and be less a liability in the field than over at 3B.
  19. This. They are certainly wise enough to stagger their arb schedule over at least 3 years. Reusse appears to be using his SOP of going against the "conventional wisdom" to stir the pot. I'd like to think that Santana and Rosario could be the opening day MIs in 2014, but it would require an extraordinary set of developments, both in on the field performance and breaking with Twins tradition for promotions.
  20. Wrong. If Marcum and Lannan don't hit most of their incentives, which are based on innings and starts, they can still produce stats similar to what they have accomplished in most of their careers, which would be superior to last year's Twins starters and likely far better than what Correia will produce (I'm sure most will agree that Pelfrey is a wild card that might hit, but certainly a higher risk for a predictable outcome than Marcum or Lannan). Wrong again. Marcum is the one health risk pitcher of the 3, Saunders and Lannan have a history of strong durability.
  21. Patronized-easily yet again- and an infusion of pejorative invective, all in one sentence of faux-dismissal, well played. Yet you "somehow" completely missed my point, even with the paint-by-number boldfaced dollar amounts that I provided. Moderator edit -- this is what happens when someone starts throwing around words like "patronizing and juvenile." You gentlemen are having a great debate that is illuminating and fun. Go after each other's ideas as aggressively as you wish, but please refrain from personal attacks that are irrelevant to what is otherwise a profound discussion. An "idealistic outcome", what exactly does that mean? In point of fact and directly contrary to your throw-away proposal, I "realistically" proposed 3 guys that the Twins "very realistically" could have obtained- with clearly better track records, predictable outcomes, durability and medical histories, and for only a slight premium to what they actually committed to (and yes, it is $14M guaranteed money that the Twins are obligated to pay). Finally, we both agree that the Twins have made a choice to be miserly over the next few seasons, but how can you say the Twins are "health-risk adverse", given that virtually every SP in the potential rotation has health questions that are yet to be answered, and of the FA pitchers, all but Correia have serious health concerns that make them more wild cards than players who can legitimately have their likely 2013 production parameters penciled in?
  22. Actually, they have committed $10M to Correia (2 years) and $4M to Pelfrey plus $.5M to Worley, which makes the total $14.5M. Meanwhile, still cutting around ~$25M from the payroll. The base salary for the 3 pitchers I proposed is $13M. And, they are all on one-year, incentive-laden contracts. In addition, it's extremely unlikely that Lannan and Marcum will hit most of their incentives, so the net cost of the 3 acquisitions is much likely closer to $15-18 M than the $20.5M potential max cost. So, assuming the Twins acquire Worley anyways via the trade, the Twins could have had 3 better pitchers for only a few million more dollars than the 2 they did sign, one attached with question marks after coming off of TJ and the other, 2 years committed to one of the worst SPs in baseball. Regardless, throwing Greinke, Lohse, Sanchez into the conversation is sheer fantasy and not anything close to equivalent comparisons, as you're talking about $275M combined in committments to the three players.
  23. D*** you, and your Big Media Market Budget....
  24. And I'll see you with Marcum, Lannan and Saunders...
  25. The latest update with the very good news of a positive MRI result revealed previously undisclosed information from Plouffe that this recent injury isn't as bad as "when he initially sustained the calf strain while working out before Spring Training." So to straighten out Plouffe's comment, the injury is in fact, at the least, a month old. What does that tell you, other than that the injury either wasn't properly reported by Plouffe, diagnosed, treated, rehabilitated or, all of the above, in the initial phase? Why not an MRI then? Plouffe said this in regards to how he'll handle the injury from this point on: "...I'm not too worried about it, but we'll take some time with it. I'm sure I won't be in there this week at all." Hopefully, the rest approach yields positive results and this is just a Grade 1 strain blip, the Twins can't afford to place yet another pint-sized bat in the starting lineup on opening day.
