  1. I didn't advocate this trade specifically, screaming, shouting or whispering. I pointed out that there are always opportunities to upgrade your roster if you care to do so, this being one of a presumed-many potential, and hopefully better, possibilities. I also pointed out that, sadly, Roberts career OPS of .717 and Rodriguez's career OPS of .658 (I did notice how you cherry-picked one year to make your arguement, even so, that .607 OPS for 2012, would still outstrip everyone in the Twins MI except Carroll, and Rodriguez is 27 with more range) would be a major upgrade at the plate and even a net upgrade in the field, combined with Carroll as UI, over what the Twins currently project. I would say that Carroll is proof that Robert's age shouldn't necessarily be a deterrent to consider him in taking on Carroll's role as backup 2nd/3rd baseman when Carroll retires- plus you'd have a superior bat coming off the bench. All things being equal, I would prefer a trade for a young, AAA-proven, blocked MI, that projects to hit up to .150 points OPS higher than Florimon and Escobar and retain hope that Rosario keeps progressing at 2B to become at least adequate at the position at the ML level (that still likely means 2015, at the earliest). I'll get back to you on that, or feel free to find them, as well.
  2. Right, except that point of certainty left the harbor a couple seasons back...except for the legion of "Yes We Can" fans who continue to enjoy their cruise on the General Bellgrano...Google Image Result for http://www.wrecksite.eu/img/wrecks/general_belgrano_sinking.jpg
  3. "Plan B" has never been found in the Twins operations manual.
  4. Bam...and...Bam...again. Too many people are too sentimentally enamored with the abounding mediocrity in the Twins system- time for the so-inclined fanbase, as well as the FO braintrust, to read a couple of Schumpeter books about corporate "creative destruction". Been calling for this move for quite some time, but wait, I know we all need to panic about yet another 40 man roster disruption. Too many people forget too easily that, notwithstanding Gardy's man-crush on Dozier, it was widely predicted that the failure in the Dozier jump to the majors was so easily predictable... and that it represented FAIL on both offense and defense. Hopefully they didn't pull the plug too late with him last year. His 48 game performance in Rochester after his demotion was far less than inspiring about his comeback possibilities.
  5. No screaming here. The facts are: Twins MI is terrible going into 2013. Doumit has a limited shelf life of value left in his career. Roberts and Rodriguez would upgrade the Twins..... but I certainly hope they could do better than that in trade.
  6. Yeah, because we can't cut one of these AAA catchers were to Martinez beat him out?
  7. Except that this guy is major league ready and has a superior track record in AAA.... and costs nothing to find out if he's a bust.
  8. I hope we can do much better than this! This was but one example. Sadly, the state of the Twins MI is at such low ebb, that guys like this look like rays of sunshine.
  9. Heh-heh. This is your response to my saying that we need to cut catchers and possibly trade an asset, not add more?
  10. How about we cut the 31 that aren't doing anything now, or project to doing much of anything later?
  11. 1) As many have pointed out in the discussion of money management, the 700K committed to Butera is chump change. You are correct, no one else will take on that money, you can use him at the major league level or Rochester. That the Twins were willing to re-sign him and give him a raise demonstrates that the Twins aren't trying very hard to send the message about improvements. 2) You again answered your own point about the downside and potential pitfalls in calling up and relying on someone too soon. Herrmann would best benefit getting as many PAs and caught games as possible, not riding the Twins bench. 3) The Rays are reported to be shopping Ryan Roberts, now. Sean Rodriguez has been demoted to a utility role and the Rays have a young prospect biting at the bit. This is but one team's scenario at bolstering the Twins infield.
  12. Obviously, someone, or someones, are expendable, or in Doumit's case, possibly tradeable.
  13. Don't you see trade-value in Doumit, provided he puts up numbers akin to 2012, to upgrade the team longer-term?
  14. Different point than what I believe the poster was arguing against. You can continue to defend what the the club has done in the offseason. I am looking at a club that addressed the most pressing need haphazardly from the rejection pile and the Red Cross casualty list, failed to address glaring problems in the infield and tore itself some new holes in the OF. Since they are rebuilding without admitting it publicly, it makes sense to have a plan in place to continue to improve the club by trading off assets that won't be a part of the finished rebuilt product in whatever year they secretly deem to be when they "really" return to competitiveness- Butera shouldn't be there now, let alone then and if they have any sense at all, Doumit probably won't be there, either. Martinez was acquirable for nothing and could have provided short-term depth to help make the team more stomachable during this bridge time and at least send the message that 9 shades below mediocrity as a hitting catcher is no longer acceptable, the spots should be earned, not deemed.
  15. You also have to look at the DHs in baseball. Doumit is one of the better ones and has potential value at not one, but 2 positions (not the best catcher, I know). The Rays are rumored to have Roberts on the block, and Rodriguez may be expendable as well, and have an iffy DH coming off of injury, that's but one example. If they or someone else is willing to consider a Spring Training trade, given the Twins holes in the infield, shouldn't the Twins be listening now, and be prepared to move seamlessly? If they wait until the deadline? Herrmann may be ready at the break, but then again, he may not. Good to have backup alternatives, yes? Regarding Martinez's hitting, do you read the posts? I got the hint, as I pointed out that his AAA numbers were in the PCL, but they still translate far better than what the Twins currently have behind Doumit and Mauer for 2012. Is there anyone that doubts that Butera couldn't put up those kind of numbers in the PCL?
  16. That's 4 catchers right there with question marks about how much time they will/should serve behind the plate. Their 2 other rostered catchers haven't progressed far enough up through the organization to offer immediate or certain levels of contribution. That's now 6 question marks.
  17. Fish or cut bait. I would also hope that the Twins would listen to offers to improve the club at every position. Right now, Butera still is an unacceptable major league ballplayer, Hermann is at least a half a year away, Mauer has to be limited to maximize the value of his contract and Doumit is a potential asset to improve the club via trade.
  18. Yeah, I implied that in the opening post. I would like to know why they won't address a bench that threatens to conceivably hit below .600 OPS and factor in a chance to add positional depth pending a possible trade or injury to their current DH/C.
  19. Who said anything about proof? Parmellee tore the cover off the ball in his 2011 September call-up from AA and struggled in 2012 (.229/.290/.380). The evidence fairly convincingly suggests that the jump from AA to the majors is rarely a smooth one. Even if Herrmann tears the cover off the ball this spring, are you suggesting that he is somehow odds-on favorite to be on the opening day roster?
  20. Teams are known to cut players when they find something more intriguing, Martinez has a higher level of experience and AAA success.
  21. Good to hear about Pinto. I like Hermann a lot down the road and I'd certainly love for the future to be now instead, but he's best off playing almost everyday for now at Rochester. His need of another year of minor league experience seemed apparent last September.
  22. Eric Fryer .566 OPS in two years @ AAA Danny Lehmann .632 OPS in 3 years @ AAA
  23. I tend to think we're all agreed on Butera. Which leaves a huge blindspot that the Twins are unable to address- having virtually no bench player that can hit. I agree they have too many catchers on the 40-man, but 3 of them do play other positions. They are using an unusual alignment that is likely to evolve. Mauer played the most games at C with only 72 games started at the position in 2012. Hermann's progress this year at AAA is going to go a long way to determine what happens with the position. The Orioles have a bona-fide All-Star at the position, yet they added another catcher. Pinto is a question mark. He is still fairly young and would he pass through waivers? I can't answer that question Regardless, if Doumit were to become a viable trading chip or sustain an injury, it would help in the interim time while waiting on Herrmann and Pinto to prove they're promotable, it's always better to have more depth, not less.
  24. You're wrong on your facts, as usual, but as always, you stay totally classy. Butera stands to make only 700K this year, not a million, at least yet. You also ignored the scenario I proposed in improving the club. The Twins have Hermann coming up to AAA for the first time, I asked what would be wrong with adding an experienced, plus arm catcher, that also could add depth at the major league level. In addition, I noted that to improve the club long-term, the current catching situation will have to change. If Doumit were to become desirable as a DH/C option to a team, having this added depth would help significantly. I didn't say cut Butera, I said add competition, Butera will likely pass through waivers, and if he somehow miraculously didn't? Very small loss. You ever-classily define this as fecal wall-throwing trolling.
  25. Because their thinking is flawed? BTW, you did notice that Martinez cleared through on waivers to AAA, no reason that the Twins couldn't have acquired Martinez and passed him and another through during the process.
