  1. Garver has already had some discussion going here after his hot start. And he's continued to show the way in CR. Only a 9th round, 4th year college guy, his hitting stats in his junior and senior year look awfully good, so maybe last season's low production numbers in E-Town was just fatigue factoring in. Don't know how he compares to Tyler Grimes (5th round in 2011) behind the plate, but the route to a promotion to Ft. Myers for Garver seems wide open. Grimes is batting .085 with a .279 OPS. Soon-to-be 26 year old Jairo Rodriguez is batting .136 with a .436 OPS. Stuart Turner is highly regarded by scouting services in the sense that he's supposedly the most defensively-ready major league-level Catcher in the Twins system, but he's only batting .183 with a .479 OPS.
  2. Brian Baseball. If he continues at this level of excellence, and at this point, there seems to be no reason why he won't, it will soon be time to start talking extension.
  3. Absolutely right. Consideration for promotion should be on a case-by-case basis, as each prospect has a different dynamic make-up and set of experiences- not the cookie-cutter approach the Twins are fond of, in some 90% of all cases.
  4. Or perhaps the most likely scenario is he's in the midst of what every player who has a breakout season has to endure. The league took notice and has adjusted to his weak points, and now it's his turn to re-adjust. He has good coaching there in Ft Myers, he'll be fine. And he would have been fine getting promoted to New Britain early, as well.
  5. Ohh...we've been out here...and our numbers were growing by legion by the day...even Riverbrian jumped off the P-"Flawed" bandwagon- I think even the holdouts finally computed the math and could no longer justify the tradeoff at the plate. Even the stubborn Twins management recognized their mistaken ST assessment of Florimon and was pretty proactive on this front, going after Nunez early on.
  6. Another thing about bad teams is that the 25th man, be he a Rule 5 guy or a journeyman, is probably not far away ability-wise to the 17th man, or perhaps even the 9th man in the case of teams like the Astros, Cubs or the Marlins of 2013. It's arguable that, with the relative differences in talent being so narrow in many instances, the bottom 2 or 3 guys are even more important on a bad team than on a good team.
  7. For starters, See: Solarte, Yangervis...Bonifacio, Ernesto...
  8. It's even worse than your characterization would suggest. I believe it was Dave St Peter himself who defensively, crassly, arrogantly and soon proved to be, ignorantly, tweeted something to the effect: "I can't believe all of this angst about the 25th man (Bartlett)."
  9. four Actually, they had FOUR shortstops, as Nunez was on the bench and in uniform, but didn't play. And in this instance, the 25th man problem didn't go away, it is a subset of the "What are you thinking?" problem.
  10. Maybe because, in a stale, insulated bureaucracy, these are days of future passed, where old habits, like "old favorites", die hard? But seriously, the braintrust had an offseason meeting led by the head marketing guy (St Peter?)....whose "big, bold and bright vision" for generating fan interest in 2014 was trying to help the fans forget 2011, 12 and 13 by bringing back names from the when the team was last a winner....Garza, Santana, Kubel, Bartlett, Guerrier.
  11. Santana's problems were more than a stray nonsensical miscue- Gardy accurately commented less on the specifics (which were obvious to a trained eye) and more on how he must adjust to the speed of the game at this level. These are things that can be remedied in time, but, you're absolutely right, he has to play to address them. And he shouldn't be shagging fly balls in the OF or sitting on the bench days on end, as Gardy had him doing when he first was called up. He needs to be playing every day, at SS, building up the reps and the muscle memory- and developing a more discriminating eye at the plate- he has the tools to be the perfect leadoff hitter if he can just get on base at a little higher rate.
  12. Yeah, it felt more like 2 mercy killings than anything. P-Flo would have been gone at least a week ago if not for Nunez's injury. In addition to Santana getting a chance, I wouldn't have minded seeing Vargas filling the breach in the bat department, he had 2 more hits tonight and he's been on fire since April 21.
  13. Gardy isn't exactly on Santana's bandwagon yet, accurately pointed out his costly SS shortcomings in the postgame presser- prolly comes down to picking yer' poison.
  14. If Nunez really is 100%, I don't think Santana will have a chance for anyone to jump off his bandwagon. Judging from today, there are holes in his game that need refinements, he still has a ways to go to just simply be handed the job. When the roster finally returns to normal, I would surmise that the Eduardos will share the SS job until they show they can't hack it.
  15. I harken back to Gardy's complete and fully public mis-assessment of Florimon in Spring Training ("He's my Starting SS!"), in the face of appendectomy surgery, no less. I would have thought that every single person in Twins Territory knew his bat was marginal even under the best circumstances, the surgery really gave him no chance to succeed- it seems like someone in the know should have anticipated that outcome a little better and DLd him from the outset when it was fairly obvious that he wasn't swinging a big league bat (as a few of us on TD recommended- as Chiristy just posted). His chance for a return to being the regular SS, barring a catastrophic series of injuries, is probably less than 1 in 3, but he really should be working on becoming a utility infielder, where he could still be valuable.
  16. I'm at a loss how you can agree with almost every word, as CF, which requires at least 2 players at the major league level and 2 in AAA, is the sine qua non for building OF depth and maintaining reasonable solutions should the worst happen. The Twins failed at this effort, utterly, and with malice aforethought- per their strange and inexplicable attraction to Jason Bartlett over exercising plain old common sense And Duluth fails to acknowledge that losing 4 OFs didn't happen all at once. The first 2 losses were over a month ago. And because of ridiculous roster decisions, 2 legitimate CFers were lost needlessly- and another legit AAA depth guy was let go in ST (Mitchell). The Twins have done nothing, save claiming Sam Fuld, to remedy this predicament of their own making. We concur, they clearly learned nothing from 2013 regarding the OF- only instead, now all 4 OF came in with huge question marks surrounding them. And I take strong issue with Duluth on the "planning thing". Yes, they "plan", but the problem is, and the evidence clearly shows it to be true, they always tend to stop their planning at Plan A.
  17. Except, Gardy was "forced" to keep a 14th piitcher last Friday, claiming the bullpen was somehow completely wiped out by playing 3 games in 2 days, despite having the previous 3 days off. Ridiculous. It isn't just the 20 pitches cutoff, it's using up guys by warming up in the bullpen for umpteen pitches, and then only using them for an inning or less. For example: April 30 vs. Dodgers: 3 RPs- 2.1 IP May 1 vs. Dodgers: 2 RPs- 5 IP (why not just let Deduno finish it out?) May 1 vs. Dodgers: 7 RPs- 7.2 IP (knowing it was Kris Johnson starting, somebody had to be designated to go 3 innings, and then, why not pitch Perk for both the 9th and 10th inning?)
  18. I hope that meant that he's mad at himself, and ashamed, as he had a hand in digging this organizational hole.
  19. And Gardy shot himself in the foot on this issue yet again today. 5 RPs used up in 3.2 innings pitched
  20. The pressing need was keeping a promise, apparently. Parmelee was the obvious move- last Sunday evening...and they could have 60-dayed Willingham, which it sounds like they're going to do eventually, anyway.
  21. This was not an impediment. Willingham could have been 60-dayed.
  22. Check the Googlemaps for this weekend's 2 series. Detroit to Toledo- Toledo is practically a suburb of Motown. More moves by taxicab coming? https://maps.google.com/
  23. Would you have granted an exemption to your 100 mile rule since the Red Wings are playing at Columbus?
  24. FIFY I have to think that TR may have already been distracted with his health problems by this time. Which would mean that Antony and Gardy had their hands in this, and Bartlett was looming over any decision from the day he was signed.....hence the club's ZERO interest in Bonifacio.
  25. Here's his twitter link: https://twitter.com/Captainlew20 Here's his agent's website: http://www.lswbaseball.com/ (They represent Mike Trout, so maybe they know something about other available OFers:jump:)
