  1. Give him credit for going down and not pouting, but he looked vastly overmatched with the big club (and by recommending DFAing him, it's with the assumption that no one else wanted to put him on their 40-man- I could be wrong about that). By calling him up, you essentially waste a roster spot, just so Pinto or Suzuki can PH in the 7th, 8th or 9th. Why not have multiple options with an actual chance of getting a hit? Escobar can catch for an inning or two should the worst happen. Does Gardy remember how to double-swtich?
  2. Yup. The broadcast crew tried their best to excuse the busted play on the wind, but it was much more than an issue of the stiff breeze, it was pretty clear that Hicks just doesn't have the instincts right now that a CF needs, particularly on balls hit deep.
  3. Worse than that foolishness, this was the perfect scenario to bring up a bona fide pinch hitter and position player....Hermann, he of the .128 BA, .319 OPS and very shaky OFing skills, is the antithesis of that description. (The Twins missed a chance to DFA Hermann off of the 40-man after his last demotion).
  4. @ $14-15M for a QO? Surely you jest.
  5. I completely agree with your latter sentence. I rationally disagree with your former sentence. If they can't get a decent prospect in return before the deadline, Suzuki at this point doesn't show his age behind the plate and would make a perfect backup catcher at his career hitting averages- until Turner or someone else proves ready to take that spot. (I'm not ever going to be sold on Hermann, Fryer or anyone else in the upper levels of the minors).
  6. This move still answers questions and does tell us that: Willingham isn't ready. Florimon's 3 hits, 5 errors, in 9 games isn't quite good enough to get him recalled. Vargas isn't coming up any time soon, notwithstanding his ~1.300 OPS over the last month. Arcia wasn't worth calling up yet- by having to DL someone else- to get him up. And there's no one else worth calling up and risking losing a player on a roster claim.
  7. By this line of reasoning, then if the manager sees more matchups he likes, shouldn't he consider going to a permanent 14 man staff? The onus is on management to have a pitching staff of 12 with an SP staff that can pitch 6+ innings consistently, plus a relief corps of 7 that contains multiple arms that can pitch multiple innings- again, they can roster their "13th pitcher" at Rochester with proper roster option exchanges. Monkeypaws is right, Gardy somehow unfathomably, got himself into a bullpen predicament after getting 3 consecutive off-days just a little over a week ago, forcing him to roster 14 pitchers and one OF- by foolishly burning pitcher after pitcher for no comparative advantage.
  8. Well stated. The "13 pitchers becoming the norm myth" has been become yet another addition to the "Twins Way Talking Points" and fully reflective of the increased importance in the Twins organization of "management of the message".... that is then dutifully and regularly reiterated, generally with little skepticism, by both the on-air and many of the scribe journalists. Re: In what other media market around the League could the Twins have gotten away without blanket excoriation regarding the Bartlett & CF fiascoes- not after the fact, but before and during? The President of the Twins, not satisfied with by and large keeping the media in check, actually took to Twitter to obliquely attack his own fan base for questioning a strange decision, and what soon proved to be a colossal unforced error.
  9. Entirely predictable......Because it's absolutely critical to carry 3 catchers in an NL ballpark.
  10. Yes. Yes. Yes. (But does it make too much sense?.... I still lean for the Twins to go to the Gardy-auto-default-position of either extra catchers or shortstops).
  11. Yeah, you're probably right. Not sure if he's really ready, though....Jennifer Lawrence? Maybe. BTW, Vargas also just hit a long one for New Britain, although I know the Twins definitely won't go there....he'd still be an ideal pinch hitter for the next 5 games.
  12. Huh....I sense a sudden-onset groin pull coming for Mike Tonkin.....
  13. Oswaldo just went yard for Roc. (2-3 on the day, also has a double). Does he get the ticket to travel with the team to the West Coast?
  14. So....we'll see you back here Tuesday evening, then?
  15. I agree, it's far more likely a function of just one bad outing by Eades. That said, his overall May numbers are deteriorating- which begs the question- Why? In breaking down the intrinsic differences, his BABIP rose from .350 to .390 from April to May, with his May BABIP-IFB sitting at .400, and all this while his GB% has actually had a huge uptick- going from 31%. to 43% and his LD% and OFB% have dropped month over month. His K/9 has actually improved, by better than one K/9: from 8.20 in April, to 9.42 in May. To be bluntly honest, the crew behind him performed poorly in E-Town last year, and maybe as a group, they just aren't very good in the field. Combine that with Eades pitching in some bad luck, I think you get a decent inference on what's happening down there. I wait for JC to straighten this all out.
  16. Nothing deeper or darker, obviously there's some give and take and "expectations" when a large broadcasting contract is awarded. Name one significant business or organization that doesn't have controlling "the message" as a top priority. This is far from the first time, and it won't be the last time, that "the message" is posted in a press release or stated by the front office, and then uncritically repeated or rehashed on the air, practically verbatim.
  17. Whatever would make you think that the broadcasting team would collaborate and orchestrate the "message" that the team wishes to express?
  18. I thought I'd never say it, as I prefer selling high- but if you can't orchestrate a trade for a high-ceiling prospect at SS or SP- if you could get him next year at the same price, perhaps they should consider an extension? Even when he inevitably returns to his career norm hitting levels, there's no indication that he can't make a perfect backup defense-first catcher to Pinto.
  19. When Bowden is providing you free advice....RUN!!
  20. 40 percent kidding? The guy is carrying this team, if Dozier's the heart of the team, Suzuki is the soul (thus far). I've always been a fan of Zuke in the past, but never could I have imagined that he was capable of what he's done so far.
  21. Gee, the Mariners are up and at it bright and early, posting their lineup already?....must be the time difference....oh, wait...
  22. Wow, I feel like I interfered with the Star Trek space-time continuum. The NL West might be starting an arms race reminiscent of the Al East. (Oh well, it wasn't like it ever would have occurred to the Twins to consider this "radical" option, anyway. LaRussa's personality would have rocked too many Twins Way wessels.) [/Chekov-off]
  23. Lack of enough innate ambi-dexterity?
  24. Actually, Nate Silver is now a pariah to the Democrats, as well, given his current forward political projections- and he's been pretty opaque about his methodology in both sports and politics- inviting controversy and speculation. And he has now wisely returned to a sports focus to reduce the slings and arrows, leaving the NY Times and joining ESPN. Good stuff, though, Stringer. Do you have the direct links to the meaty projection stuff?
  25. What indications have we received thus far that we're NOT on the exact same course as before? Tony LaRussa was reported as being considered for various GM jobs in the offseson. Having taken 2 mid-market teams to the MLB pinnacle in the past as manager, with a history of developing young talent and avid student of sabremetric analysis, he would be the dream candidate to take the Twins position, ego and all. Is Jim Pohlad intrepid enough to finally bring in a Type A personality to guide and lead all of the young superstars in the current pipeline?
