  1. Huh. I'm sure his RF and DRS was docked by .2 for that lackadaisical effort.
  2. Has anyone said any different about Wilson? The point was he was on the 40-day, and that was the best they could come up with, after getting their hat handed to them repeatedly in the roster wars. Nothing more? Really? Or maybe they have done a really bad job at supplementing and having the proper concern about depth in an obvious area of weakness from the exact day in 2012 when they got rid of both of their CFers.
  3. Like last year, Pelfrey just has to pitch with minimum competence and he will be back up, role TBD. Cola will be going down soon. Duensing actually has options left, and based on last night, at some point, even he might need a stint in AAA, as well as T-Bar, if there're better options in Rochester (and there are).
  4. This is not the worst problem in the world. One of the SS's (I would move Florimon down to AA, or start his transition to a Util role in Rochester) could go to New Britain until Michael and/or Polanco, Goodrum are called up. Santana should be playing every day at Short in Rochester, it's only a matter of time before they are going to need him at SS with the Twins.
  5. Pelfrey just needs to pitch passably and he will be the first call-up, whether we like it or not. (And in the big scheme of things, Darnell is almost an afterthought compared to what May, and especially Meyer, can ultimately bring to the rotation. Of course, the Twins generally prefer to call up the prospects lowest on the expectations list first, so if there's an opening in the next few weeks and Pelfrey can't cut it, Darnell will likely be the first to get the call.)
  6. Until Buxton is ready to take the job full-time, the Twins simply have to have guys like Fuld, who are reasonable facsimiles to real CF's, particularly compared to every other option not named Hicks, within the organization.
  7. Hopefully, that's in the Twins bullpen. (Gardy might get his Spring Training wish after all).
  8. I would put up a reasonable wager that Cola will be down within a couple weeks. RH for RH would be the natual switch once the Hammer is ready.
  9. Someone check with Elias Sports Bureau. Is there a team in MLB history to DFA 4 real, actual, bona fide CFers off of their 40-man roster in less than 2 months time? After what the Twins have just gone through, there is no way they are just going to walk away from Fuld, especially with the shaky nature of Hicks's status with the team. Looking at the active roster, they have one decent OF, two barely accpetable ones (in Kubel and Paremelee) with the rest being various forms of dreadful or playing out of position.
  10. From MLBTR (1:40 CST):
  11. I wonder about the subjective rating of individual pitches while throwing against high school players. And baseball was more of a hobby for Stewart than football, so this is probably still a very raw kid, as pitchers go, he's probably strictly a thrower at this point. More importantly, let's address the subject based on what we know for sure.....For the most part, these are the same players that Stewart had a 10.80 K/9 last year in Gulf Coast and E-Town. I heard that the gun had him at 95MPH today. Unless there is more negative information, perhaps health-related, yet to reveal itself, it's logical to conclude that he's primarily working on his secondary pitches, with the main goal in that regard being to get them over the plate, while developing an organized pitching plan, not to fool people and blow everyone away. This situation is definitely worth watching, but until we start hearing about UCLs or shoulder soreness, we can probably let this play out for a while and sleep soundly at night.
  12. Interesting article out today on Vargas. Now he's giving even more reasons out why I predict he soon will become a MN Twins fan favorite. He's gone through a lot to get where he is now, and he's more than willing to give back. And now..... Big Papi has fully taken him under his wing: http://www.milb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20140520&content_id=76026598&fext=.jsp&vkey=news_milb&sid=milb If he keeps hitting at this pace, he's bound to enter some top 100 lists, mid-season or next off-season, and one would have to think he'd be projected to making the Twins roster no later than 13 months from now.
  13. He had a ton of GBs today- 10, with only 3 FBs. That is likely to put his total GB% well above 50%. In the Midwest League, for pitchers who have thrown 35 or more innings, there are only 16 pitchers above the 50% rate. After today, he'll probably rank about #10 in the league. I think Stewart will be fine.....as Birdwatcher surmises above, there's a good chance that he's working on his other pitches, as this appears to be a level perfect for him to toy with his approach on the mound, and work on a general plan going forward from Low A ball. It seems way too soon to start panicking over the K rate after 40 A-ball innings when we don't know all of the facts. If he's still whiffing guys at this rate late next summer after a call-up to AA, it might be time to sound the alarm.
  14. Don't leave Jorge Polanco out of the mix, either.
  15. Remember too, he's literally learning how to become a professional pitcher, probably far behind a typical top teenage A-ball top pitching prospect in terms of understanding the game and what it takes to succeed......quarterbacking was clearly his main sports focus up until less than a year ago.
  16. Is his main teaching goal right now just to throw strikes?.....And.....Given all the Ground Balls he's inducing, is he working primarily on getting his sinker to become an effective out pitch? (That's assuming he throws one at this point, IDK).
  17. That sounds about right. Even if Nelson is dropped, it still seems like there's one too many guys that need a spot between the Twins and Red Wings, once everybody's all finally healthy. It seems unlikely that Parmelee will clear waivers this time- so either he stays with the Twins or he's probably gone. I would kind of like to see Cola and Vargas battle for Red Wing playing time at First and DH and making each other better in the process.
  18. Post #7: IIRC, when Dave posted, he was hosting some Twins event at Studio 57, or some such NYC dive.....
  19. The day after Berrios and May produce dominating performances, it's great to see. I heard he was hitting 95 on the gun and continually forcing the opponent to pound the ball into the ground.
  20. Absolutely right. Especially for guys like May, it should be No Consideration, whatsover. But also for the better prospect pitchers. Cingrani, Bundy, Stroman, Price, Cole. Some made it on their first call-up, some didn't. The only way to find out if they're truly ready is to get them up throwing to major leaguers, if they stick, they can be game changers.
  21. This is Kennys Vargas's plate numbers over the last 2 weeks. The Beast awakens....and few are taking much note,,,,,and he's doing this with virtually no support in front of, or behind him, in the woeful New Britain batting order. Imagine a potential switch-hitting David Ortiz, he's now basically one stop away from the Twins lineup. It's been a month now since Vargas began his torrid hitting in AA, while the numbers have smoothed out a bit, his numbers since April 20, are better or comparable to the Eastern League leader, Top 50 uber-prospect of the Red Sox, Mookie Betts's season-long stats. Even with his poor start in April, overall for the season, Vargas now ranks in the top 5 in the EL in SLG, ISO, OPS and wOBA, top 4 in wRC+. Here are his stats for the last month: He is continuing to demonstrate that his added plate discipline is not a fluke. How many power hitters, at any level, have a 1.00 BB/K ratio? Now the only question is: When will he be promoted to Rochester? The First Baseman currently there is 31 year old journeyman, Brad Nelson. I would think that once Arcia and Willingham are back with the Twins, the club can choose to cut or demote Nelson, opening a potential spot for Vargas to DH and play some First. But they'll undoubtedly have to make decisions on Hermann, Nunez, and especially, Colabello and Parmelee, who pose potential blocks in Rochester to Vargas's chances to moving up and claiming a roster spot with the Wings.
  22. Maybe not as a High A manager, but "under the bus throwing" for young players is a Gardy specialty at the major league level.
  23. Arcia wasn't really part of the discussion anyway as he wasn't eligible. But I'm all in favor of, and have been from the first week of April, and before, of making sure that Arcia is absolutely 100% healthy and 100% ready to play before he is called up- the extra time in Rochester would likely help him give more assurance that his next call-up can be for the long haul. But Hermann's call up does nothing to help anyone but Gardy, what with his strange affectation for having useless spare parts lying around (and he's still pining for Florimon, besides).
  24. You mean back in the 90s when he was in charge of compiling the list and then checking off the bus and flight manifests doesn't count as roster and personnel decisions?
  25. At 5280 feet elevation, Coors is a different animal altogether. I still take exception to all of the whining done back when the ballpark opened, including the specious blaming the lack of power on the spruce trees. TF is a tougher place to hit a HR than the Dome or Yankee Stadium? Sure. "Unfair"? Big league hitters should be able to adjust, it's documented that a bunch of guys not named Thome still regularly reach the RF seats in TF.
