And thus- "projection job well done- business as usual", "nothing to see here"= ignore the disturbing things that we can actually discern from Hicks' actual career performance thus far. Predicting the average and BABIP will rise closer to league average is a perfectly reasonable assumption.....turning from one of the worst, into one of the top 4 CF in baseball isn't. It still makes me wonder what the Oliver projections have done in similar situations with other guys like Gomez who struggled early on in their MLB careers.
-
There actually was a little more thought than that put into it, scroll all the way over..... BABIP normalizes up quite a bit and drags the BA up. But his OBP plummets, while his WAR puts him into the acceptable range. And most importantly, he head-scratchingly somehow goes from one of the worst defensive CF in baseball, to one of the top 4 best, based on 2013 Def figures.
-
As controversial as projections are around this site- particularly for underestimating future performance.....here's a 5-year Oliver projection, sure to make certain less-optimistic heads explode (I would love to see how they came up with Hicks somehow achieiving a 10.7 Def ranking). (It also makes me want to go and find the 5-year Oliver projection for Carlos Gomez around 2010. Fun? I think that it's more delightfully known as schadenfreude. Want even more Dodger Blue schadenfreude? How about them also using Drewbie as a Relief Pitcher?
-
Uhh....look at the Rochester Red Wings pitching numbers. And then compare them to the 2013 numbers. The AAA club has gone from Worst in the IL to nearly First, in terms of ERA and K%. Looking for near-future replacement pitchers? Rochester is a good place to start.
-
Yeah, because it hasn't already been proven over and over this season that the choice of who the 25th man is actually has consequences attached to it.
-
You nailed it- this is a really good post at some special things developing down at the lower levels. Some have been triumphantly decrying Polanco's "apparent" recent drop in production as the calendar turned to May, with an "I told you so". They have failed to note that, with his hit today, he has now hit safely in all 16 games this month. And all of his hitting averages, from both sides of the plate, save a slight drop in his SLG from the left side, are essentially very close to his stellar April numbers. And now Adam Brett Walker and Jose Berrios are starting to assert themselves. Even Levi Michael had awakened from after-thought status before he went to the DL. And you're absolutely right about Gardy, at face value, I don't think he'll be the right manager for Polanco, but look at how strongly Dozier came back after falling on his face in 2012. Perhaps Polanco is showing that he too, is made of sterner stuff (a lesser man would have melted into a tub of goo after his SS disasters in April). And who knows, Dougie Fresh may end up being his big league manager in the long run. I like whatever it is he's doing in FtM with all of these elite prospects- I've written about it before, he was a high school teammate of ARod, so perhaps his familiarity with HOF level guys in their developing years is a helpful attribute.
-
And unlike Sano and Walker, this recent 30-day power outbreak has happened with a precipitous drop in his K%, just over 10% (career lows) with a commensurate rise in BB%. He's showing himself to be a very impressive student of the game at the plate, and most incredibly (as you noted), he's doing it without much plate protection to speak of in New Britain.
-
Yup. Arcia will never be very good defensively, but with 2 other good-to-superior (in the case of Buxton) OFers out there, his shortcomings can be minimized to a great extent. If he can fix his rookie fits and starts at the plate and fully heal his wrist issues, he can be a regular 30+ HR, 130 OPS+, Crush Davis-type mashing guy. I am very confident about Vargas becoming a fixture at DH and playing maybe 20-30 games/year at First. (And can we drop the "not ready/fragile flower" excuse about Vargas, he's 9 months older than Arcia, with a fully grown body).
-
For 2 games in San Diego, then yes, it makes sense, provided Hammer can join the team in San Francisco. But Hermann's value to the big club is less than filler, if not for Florimon, he was literally the worst hitter in all of baseball while he was up previously, and was pretty bad in the OF, as well. And finally, I don't want him called up because it invites Gardy to consider continuing the 3-catcher boondoggle roster should he keep the 12 pitcher alignment after next Sunday. Vargas might fail spectacularly, but it does nothing to hurt his future development in only 5 games on the roster, and it gives the Twins a better chance to gain something from the PH role, certainly over the likes of Hermann.
-
1) Santana sitting or playing unfamiliar positions are 2 really, really bad ideas. If he is going to be the future SS, it's clear based on his present state of readiness, he needs to play the position daily. Vargas is a future DH, conveniently, the Twins need a pinch hitter for this trip, he can PH for 5 days and benefit from the experience, Santana is in a polar opposite situation to Vargas. 2) Can't make injuries up? Tell that to Mike Pelfrey. 3) I'm not prepared to forget my plan, I've spent too much time thinking about it. 4 starters works perfectly for the road trip. Starting next week, and not until Thursday, May 29th, you then have many options at AAA to plug into that 5th starter spot. Pelfrey, Darnell, Johnson, May, Meyer, (even Correia would be able to come back on May 30). 4) Hermann is a bad, bad option, not the "only choice". If it's just 2 days in San Diego, I guess it makes the best sense of a bad option/choice, but I would prefer that Willingham come back absolutely at 100%- if that means a week from Monday back in Minnesota, then I would prefer to give Vargas the full 5 days.

Brian Dozier 20/20? Sure. How about 30/30?
jokin replied to stringer bell's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Can you think of a scenario where Gardy moves Dozier out of the leadoff role? Fuld? Nunez? Escobar? Santana? Mauer? I don't see Gardy moving him in the order, unless Dozier's performance changes for the worst. I think 30/30 is possible, but the SB number is more likely to be achieved, he clearly has become an avid disciple of Molitor's mentoring, and his OBP looks sustainable enough to give him plenty of SB chances.....but I think that 30 HR mark is going to become a big challenge as more pitchers adjust to his power. 23 seems a more optimistically realistic number. Still, it's incredibly encouraging that Dozier is now being compared to many of the Twins all-time greats. -
Game Thread: Twins v Mariners, 5/18 @ 1:10pm CT
jokin replied to Squirrel's topic in Archived Game Threads
The Mauer/Nolasco play was on both of them, but moreso on Nolasco, who also threw a wild pitch (as did Guerrier, which directly led to a run). Hicks earlier on also failed to make a play on a ball in front of him, carried by the wind and propelled with some odd spin, but still catchable. Hicks later compounded that error of failing to anticipate the cross-wind quite badly on the Cano warning track blast- completely turned the wrong way going back and wasn't within 20 feet of where the ball landed- a difficult but catchable play. Santana has that physical stutter in his release, clearly he has overcome that bad habit in the minors with a cannon arm in the past, that's not going to work as well with the Twins, on both DP attempts and throwing out the major league level swift-of-foot. Gardy may also have been talking about Hicks' baserunning miscue, which partly led to a DP, but I'm not sure about that. -
Article: The Big Switch: Brian Dozier
jokin replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
As will his warning track outs. Topping 18 HRs from last year seems likely, 25-28 is not out of the realm of possibility, as there are still a lot of bad pitching staffs and warm weather coming....sure to help him in his quest, will be Mauer when Joe finally starts hitting Mauer-like right behind him. -
Because the bridge hasn't been completed yet and he offers cheap insurance in case the bridge still isn't completed until 2016? (And a perfect backup should Pinto accelerate his development behind the plate and go full-time sooner rather than later). Look, no one expected what he's doing at the plate, but regardless, hitting at his career batting averages, he's cheap insurance and a very valuable commodity behind the plate and in mentoring the younger catchers and pitchers.
-
Yeah, and I heard a rumor that Hell was scheduled for a freeze-over atmospheric event scheduled for just before Memorial Day, not holding my breath on either happening.
-
As far as position flexibility goes, Hermann has shown that he's very shaky as an OF, and shown in the past that his catching abilities are suspect. What the Twins need against the NL teams for 5 games is good pinch hitters, first, positional flexibility, second. Hermann offers very little in either regard.
-
Right. There are bats dangerously regressing all over the place on the Twins roster- Hermann basically offers nothing to pick those failing hitters up. What does it hurt to have a switch-hitting, free-swinging prospect get his feet wet with big league pitching for 5 games? The downside of the move is nearly negligible, whatever value he offers to team going forward is going to be at the plate- and either Vargas accelerates his inevitable move towards the big club with those Plate Appearances, or he chalks up some valuable experience to build upon for the future. Either case, as you said, he's soon 24, he's not some teenager wet behind the ears- stop babying the best prospects already.
-
A I E R R O C How's that for coded messages?
-
Yup, unless Arcia replaces another player going on the DL- get the whole story LEN3!
-
"Someone" could have gone to the DL (we all know who the usual suspect is, and there is precedent with Pelfrey's mystery injury), and with a day off tomorrow, the rotation could have flowed perfectly through the entire road trip with a 4-man rotation.
-
Kind of like sitting Santana for multiple days on end, and playing him out of position when he does play?
-
AA is regarded as a legitimate jump-off point to the majors. Arcia could have been called up if another player were placed on the 15 day. Vargas is also on the 40-man.

Yes, it was colossal. And Pressly is still on the team in Rochester. And Fuld should have been claimed, whether or not Presley was no longer with the team, the club has desperately needed to add to depth at that position for the last 18 months- clearly Fuld was an upgrade, but a fortunate, desperate and downright lucky upgrade, not one they anticipated or game-planned. There are some who can try and revisionize what happened with Bartlett, but yes, it was a colossal mistake that a veteran management group should have easily forseen was likely going to blow up in their faces. It cost them not only a couple of competent, but not good, players at a premium position, it cost them development time for Danny Santana at SS (which he desperately needs), and created losses and reduced the chances to win multiple games already.
