  1. When the prospect rankings came out, people were wondering if his lofty ranking was all hype. The kid just blew up in the fall and winter in connection to international and Australian baseball, after a ridiculously good GCL stint. After then seeing him on video, I was in the other camp that said he probably should be the highest pitching prospect in the organization not named Meyer or Stewart, eclipsing Berrios. Give the Twins credit for forgoing E-Town (for now, anyway) and giving the kid a shot- I'm willing to advise and extend my negative remarks about the typical propsect-slow-play if the Twins keep pushing this kid. Any kind of success here, and Thorpe could be on the fast track, possibly even shooting right through High A and AA next year- he'd be slightly less than 3 months shy of his 20th birthday on September 1st, 2015. I think we'd have to go back to Bert Blyleven in 1970 to see the last teenager starter for the Twins? I'm sure the Twins will keep close track of his innings, but a guy can dream.....Hey Pelfrey will be off the books after 2015 and Deduno will be arb eligible in 2016- which will undoubtedly make the Twins strongly consider that it's time to move on, the field should be very clear by opening day, 2016.
  2. $23M X 5 Not only would this be the worst possible time to attempt to trade Mauer, Joe would have none of it with his no-trade clause.
  3. Hah. That train to Boston left over a year ago, when Mauer still had real value as a Catcher.
  4. Since the one and only legit leadoff guy was traded away, Gardy has been doing the hot-hand-hunch theory of leadoff guy (minus the ill-fated Month of Hicks, April, 2013). Santana currently fills the bill. But, I am simply stunned how Gardy has overlooked his most obvious hot-bat guy to lead off against RHP pitchers--Eduardo Escobar has a .350 OBP against righties in 108 PAs- and has yet to bat leadoff.
  5. Hah. At this point, until TR returns to full-time status, Jonah Hill had more say over Art Howe (No, not Phillip Seymour Hoffman, who played Art Howe, the REAL Art Howe), based on the movie, Moneyball, than Rob Antony has over Gardy.
  6. How about Dozier protecting Mauer?
  7. And who dares to call Mike a Debbie Downer? But seriously, I don't know what Shane thinks about Ortiz, long-term, but I've always assumed his best and most realistic shot at making it to the Twins was as a 4th OFer, thus it seems almost mandatory that the Twins find out sooner rather than later if he can play CF at an acceptable level.
  8. Oswaldo is only receiving about 43% of his pitches in the zone, with a league average around 48%. AJ Pierzynski leads MLB for swinging out of the zone (48.8%). Arcia is second, just ahead of the wild and crazy bad-ball hitter, Pablo Sandoval (45.2% vs. 45.1%). Unfortunately, whereas Sandoval's O-contact rate is 78%, Oswaldo's O-contact rate is well below 50%.
  9. FWIW.....Anderson is all over the map.....Baseball America projects Anderson at #32, while Perfect Game has him right around #46-50, MLB.com has Anderson at #121, Prospect Digest- "3rd or 4th round." Scouting Report: Except he's the same size as Ben Zobrist at 6'3", not Kipnis at 5'11". Why compare him to 2 big leaguers, at all? For the record, Zobrist was a 6th round pick out of a tiny NAIA school that no one has ever hear of. And Anderson looks like he can hit in pressure situations (and bats clean-up, BTW)- like the just-concluded NCAA regional: 2014 slash line: .328/.401/.498/.900
  10. It appears that all went well with Sam Fuld's "light" workout and BP with the returning club on Wednesday.Tyler Mason posted this story in-game and stated that Fuld could leave for a rehab assignment "as soon as Friday": http://msn.foxsports.com/north/story/twins-wednesday-fuld-to-begin-rehab-assignment-soon-060414 The New Britain Rock Cats are playing in Binghamton, NY, over the weekend, while the Twins begin a 10-day road trip headed to Toronto, Detroit and Boston next Monday, so it looks like the Twins will parachute Fuld into upstate New York and have him on the ready within geographical Road Warrior proximity of the big club. For those fans who like to read the tea leaves on what's going to happen with the status of the 3 players involved in the CF issue, once Fuld is reinstated, there's this: Aaron Hicks' name isn't among the numerous quotes from Gardy and Antony...
  11. Adam Brett Walker makes the FSL All Star team and quickly following up, MiLB.com does a nice update on ABW3: http://www.milb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20140604&content_id=77990800&fext=.jsp&vkey=news_milb&sid=l123 http://www.milb.com/assets/images/6/7/6/77991676/cuts/14113811717_9d861d8522_o_cci5cy0q_33zfkf0b.jpg The FSL is legendary for humbling up-and-coming thumpers, and no doubt about it, Walker has certainly had his challenges. But his bat has kept improving as the season has progressed, to the point that over the last 11 games his OPS was 1.114 with a .744 SLG, and now leads the league in Home Runs. Interesting human interest back-stories:
  12. The voters (presumably team managers?) must not like all of the errors. Polanco leads the league for Shortstops in OPS, wOBA, wRC+, BB/K, lowest K%, most BBs. He's 2nd in SLG, OBP, ISO, Hits, 2Bs, BB%. All at the tender age of 20. Sounds like an All Star snubbing to me. Hopefully, it's just adds more fuel to Jorge's fire. (FWIW, the Rays SS got the All Star nod, Reginatto had the highest BA among SS- .314 to Polanco's .291---of course, Reginatto is also 24 years old).
  13. I'd look for Dozier as a candidate to DH tomorrow with Nunez at 2nd....I've got a feeling he's going to wake up in the morning with very few spots on his body that aren't screaming OWWEEE!
  14. Yup. A 1.5% BB rate will tend to do that to you. If he keeps up this rate and starts hitting a few sac flies, he has a good chance of inverting his BA over his OBP. I'll take the power stick for now- tonight he was huge, but clearly he'll have to address the plate discipline issue at some point- or he'll start repeating the bad habits of last season. It looks like he's just happy to get back with the big league club and assert himself. To his credit, he has cut the K% by 5 points from 2013, even though his Swing % has gone up by 8 points since last year (59%-51%). If Arcia qualified, he would have the highest Swing rate in baseball, 2 points better than AJ. Interesting that the Twins have the most aggressive and the most passive (Hicks) swingers (35%) on the same roster.

  16. There was apparently little attempt, short of supposedly pursuing Rajai Davis, to shore up the offense. Suzuki was brought in for defense, his offensive production is unexpected and is highly unlikely to continue. But.....imagine if you will..... the current team with Abreu instead of Kubel and Bonifacio instead of Bartlett?
  17. Actually all THREE, and Gardy's tried that one at least once, already.
  18. I think he's growing accustomed to that fact.
  19. Meyer is on an innings limit, and assuming he stays healthy and continues in a starter role, would likely be shut down by the end of August
  20. Adam Walker appears to have finally made the adjustments to High A and flipped the switch. Walker might have a shot at being Seth's Minor League Hitter of the Month for June. And perhaps a promotion to AA before season-end? In his last 11 games: Slash- .349/.370/.744/1.114 Iso- .395 During this stretch, he has his K% under 20% (19.7%) versus a season-long K% of just under 28%. Walker had a slow start, but he now leads the league in HRs (12), with 5 in the last 11 games.

  22. That pretty much sums things up, Mike, if you just mean their beat writer, the rest of their crew, not so much. TD's inclusion in their content is a huge coup for the PP (and as I said previously, a nice win-win arrangement). I'd be kind-of surprised if the Strib didn't make an effort to making their relationship with TD more expanded and more exclusive. It will be interesting to see how this evolves.
  23. I agree with you, except Miller's coverage seem to have been cut back a bit this year.
  24. If Josh continues on this tear heading towards July, his trading value will probably never be higher over the remainder of his career.
  25. Except for the fact that Rochester was in the semifinals of the IL playoffs in 2013: http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/league.cgi?id=0032a9b6 The Twins are very unlikely to "cripple" Rochester, barring an unprecedented streak of bad injury luck, the guys that are not ready would be sent back to Rochester, other guys currently on the Twins can be optioned or outrighted to Rochester. Pelfrey is not going anywhere this year, and will have a role if he regains his health. And there are arms in New Britain, such as Sean Gilmartin, Vasquez, Baxendale and Hamburger who can capably fill holes created in Rochester.
