  1. Agree with the pass. Twins need to find out what they have and sign some decent FA pitchers. Another 90+ loss season the the spiral will have begone to empty out Target field of fans. WOW factor is what is needed.
  2. Just one more reason I have been believing in having one of Hicks, Arcia start in Minnesota next year. It may help them to start in Rochester, but the Twins need to bring in pitching and I do not think that TR will be able to sign or afford more than one FA pitcher, so trading Span and Parmalee for some major league ready arms to a cost concious team (Tampa, Seattle, Oakland, Miami) will be the best way to go.
  3. Was interesting to see what a writer thought the number was, it makes it harder for the Twins to justify not spending the money given that it was there.
  4. Revere has very little market value. I also feel the clubs with excess young pitching have limited budgets(TB,Seattle, Oakland) Most of them would rather that a Span and a Parmalee than any of the bigger payroll players(Willingham is also an eoption, but this creates another hole). I agree that spending wisely is the key, not the amount of money spent.
  5. Greinke is out of sight. May sign 1 FA pitcher at about $10 mil a year, Marcum would suit me, but want no part of Jackson. Will need to find other relief pitchers and maybe a middle infielder. That will about fill out most of what I expect to be a $90 mil budget. Could use a WOW factor player, but do not think the Twins will go that route.
  6. Twins will not overpay for pitching. That is why they will end up trading if the deal is right. Problem is going to be everyone is going to overvalue their major league ready pitching, because pitching is a hard item to find. Depends on whether the Twins can find trade partners early, because most of the pitching will be bought in the first two weeks of FA action and many big market teams will be looking.TR has his work cut out for him
  7. My biggest fear for this is that the Yankees have a way of getting umpires to squeeze opposing pitchers if tthey are not established control specialists. Also the Yankees seem to be able to force pitchers to throw a larger number of pitches and will get into the Tigers bullpen. This may not be pretty. I feel the Yankees will win in 5 or 6.
  8. They also have decent pitching, espically in the bullpen. They have added talent, both from the farm system and outside, note that Scott Schumaker is now a bench player after being a starter for some of the last few years. Twins need to get to that level and remember this is another mid market team.
  9. Depends on the budget. I also believe they are going to need 2 - 3 pitchers, most of whom will be acquired by trade. FA market will probably be too high for more than one upper middle type FA (my choice is Marcum), they also need more bullpen help(hope you do not think Alex Burnett is the answer) and a middle infielder. To bridge the pitching gap they will need to trade an outfielder and possiblly Parmalee for some major league ready pitching. Twins will need to spend the money as after 2014 and the all star game, the bottom could drop out if they are not making progress. When you have 4 - 5 outfielders who may be here in the next 3 years, it is time to start making room.
  10. Benson may still have a two or Three year window here to prove himself or he may be a throwin on a deal or obtain pitching. Have not given up on him, but his time is moving by him at a rapid rate.
  11. I agree that unless you want to spend big bucks on pitching this offseason, the Twins will have to trade to get more pitching into the system. This will entail some risks.
  12. Most of you seem to have forgotten what the CBA was during the time under discussion. Signability was an issue and the 'advisors' could steer their prospective clients away from perceived cheap organizations but curculating large demand to scare off temas they did not like dealing with. This greatly handicaped the mid and small market teams on front line talent. This has all changed with the current CBA to level the playing field and now time will tell how this affects the balance in baseball. Twins in Ryan's first term where a small market francise in terms of payroll, now they are mid market, give TR a chance to operate on a level playing field. It is easy to call for change when hinesight is 20-20, it is much for difficult when you have to deal with the information given. TR is setting higher standards under the new structure and we will see if Gardy among others is still around if the Twins under perform next year. TR knows the cubboard was bare for pitchers if the orginal 5 this year did not work out. Much more of the shakeout was because of the lack of fundimentals throughout the orgainization. The was combined with the lack of situational hitting the Twins displayed all year. If this continues expect more heads to roll.
  13. Do not know what roles the outside coaches will have. We will need to see how it shakes out this week. Vavra was lucky not to be fired as the Twins had major problbmes with situational hitting. The old Twins way moving the runner to third with one out, putting the bat on the ball when the other team is giving us a run. This was all sorely lacking this year. Either this speaks very badly of the twins players or the coaching staff does not do a good job with the lesser players.
  14. IF you do the deal for Shields, it may take Span +. I would rather give them Parmalee(which fills two of Tampa's needs cheaply) and would only add about 6 mil to the Twins payroll. What is not being dicsussed that often is that either Hicks or Arcia should be here next year, so I would think Span or Revere needs to be moved to make room. Middle indield is also a need and that will need some money spent on it. Twins still need either a shortstop or a second basemen who can hit if they wish to be competitive. This is along with much more ptiching.
  15. I still think the Twins are more likely to trade than to sign. They have around $20 mil if the budget numbers are accurate and that might have to bring 3 pitchers/players with that. Twins need to trade for pitching from strenght, outfield or first base. Iwakuma... is possible to take a chance on They could probably sign Liriano to a make good contract(just a joke). The handbook estimates seem to be very close in most cases. THis makes a good read.
  16. I would take Josh Johnson only with an extension argeement in place. Believe his price would be lower than Shields. Better bet is to trade Parmalee to Tampa Bay for one of their AAA or major league bullpen. I would inquire on the price for Shields, but believe Tampa would want at least one of the Twins top prospects and that does not solve any problems. Second note, believe payroll number will still be in the 90-1100 milllion range so some FA signings are possible (Steven Drew anyone)
  17. Problem with Tampa Bay is that you have to get the correct pitcher. There pitchers do not seem to do as well after being traded. That would be a deal for the Twins if they can find the correct pitcher
  18. If the status quo was acceptable no one would have been let go. It takes time to turn an organization around. Unless you have $200 million to spend this will take time. Starting Pitching does not grow on trees. Look at the draft this year to see how Ryan has adapted to stuff pitchers, rather than pitch to contact. He also seems to have put Gardy on notice that if he feels Gardy is not getting the best of his talent, he will be gone during or after next year. Poland's have a new set of economics, based on information from Ruesse's column in the Star Trib. They need to fill seats and 70 - 80 win seasons will not do it. Draft in later first round and below is a crapshoot. Ryan seems to have done well last year and we will see how many of these players make the major leagues in the next 3 years. Give this some time. Remember the grass is not always as green as it seems on the other side of the fence, checkout Kansas City.
  19. I think TR was admitting part of the issue was the amount of money to spend on draft picks under the old system and the fact the Twins had late first round picks and then had to watch the money for signability issues before the last couple of CBA's. Anderson seems to have gotten a pass due to starting rotation injuries and ineffectiveness(Blackburn, Marquis) from pitchers who have a lack of talent. I do not remember a modern era major league club that did not finish the year with a least one member of the starting rotation from spring training left, and I do not think those issues were all Anderson. I hope this is not a statement that the Twins do not intend to sign any FA starters from at least the middle group. That would set Gardy and Andy both up for failure, along with the front office, plus send the Twins into a downward attendence spiral that would be hard to reverse. I believe that TR had to find major league openings for Cuellar and Brunansky or probably lose both of them this winter. These moves will not mean a lot if not followed with some signings that will give hope to Twins fans for the next year. Due to BIll Smith the pitching cuboard is bare for another year or two at least, that needs to be fixed by trades or FA signings. I believe TR will explore both, but trades risky as they can be will be the way to fix the club. I only hope TR is as good as Billy Beane in talent evaluation.
  20. I think Gardy and Andy will have to show improvement next year to be retained, and I also feel that the succession plan is in place if TR decides to make a change in midseason(though he may check first to see if TK would do a part of a year). This is a start as the Twins are not showing improvement in fundamentals. This probably is as galling to TR as anything and is the reason for the shakeup in Rochester this year. Will see tomorrow what the total shakeup is, but this looks like it has been planned for a time
  21. Seattle would be a good fit, Oakland would be a good fit or Tampa Bay would be a good fit. Do not like Philly pitchers at all. Braves could also be a target. If you trade Span the Twins have many minor league outfielders coming and need pitching in the worst way. I only hope TR make the correct decisions, but all of these trades have to be guessed correctly, and Tampa Bay and Oakland have track records for great deals. I believe all twins are available, but the key pieces will cost a great deal.
  22. Trading away REPLACEABLE talent for talent. This is not a zero sum game, it is a way to survive. Look at what Oakland has done over the past few years. Twins have a glut of outfielders coming, also have some first basemen coming if they do not resign Morneau. Use the excess in those positions to find pitching is the way the Twins have to go. That being said, I believe the Twins will have to sign an expensive FA pitcher for the reason of trying to keep their season ticket base, less this become a downward spiral until the next group of above average talent arrives about the same time.
  23. My comment on Appel was that he is rated as a number 2 or 3 starter, that is not what the Twins need. Point above on him being gone after 6 years is also valid. My other comment was on college coaches using pitchers far too long and too often. Many of the ace status pitchers throw 120 - 140 pitches a game and are an accident waiting to happen. Do not know how good Appel's mechanics are, but reference (Wimmers, Alex) for this type of pitcher. I would rather wait longer and find pitchers with stuff, than fill my orgainization with pitch to contact people. These pitchers would soon be gone if every club adopted the Toronto power hitters approach to swing very hard at every pitch. Contact pitchers would see 2 -3 balls a game going over the fence that would cure this issue.
  24. I feel Washington should be at the bottom of the better than expected and Pittsburg should be higher, Minnesota should be in the Worse than expected as many expected the Twins to bounce to close to .500. I would also move Seattle higher as it was assumed they could lose between 90 - 100 games. Cubs would be in my worse than expected, not much worse and the Indians would be in the worse than expected group.
  25. As discussed in other threads, Twins had incredable bad luch with all 5 starting pitchers not finishing the year. This is unlikely to repeat, so some improvement should be expectes. However to get to average the Twins are still going to have to find 2 - 3 starting pitchers this winter. It is possible, but TR would have to hit on signings and trades much better than the average GM. My expectations for next year is a modest improvement to about 75 wins.
