1. David Dorsey has a story about Buxton's injury/re-injury and return. Thought some of you might find it interesting: http://www.news-press.com/story/sports/2014/07/14/twins-top-prospect-finally-getting-back-swing/12655233/
2. No he isn't but I asked in a different thread if anyone else had noticed it took him a long time to get out of the box so I'm glad twinstalker bought it up. It was one of those David Ortiz moments for me -- and one part of Ortiz' game that I hope he doesn't emulate.
3. Hicks was picked off and caught stealing. I've noticed this several times recently (more than usual it seems). Are they working with him to be more aggressive on the base paths?
4. L*rdy, "whether gods". Ugh. Weather gods.
5. Whether gods don't seem to be doing any favors: Brian Murphy ‏@murphPPress 11m Chilly northwest wind howling in from left field at Target Field. Bautista et al righties will need oars to pull HRs in tonight's derby #ASG Maybe Dozier can line drive 'em under the wind.
6. There would be no saving the Twins in that scenario.
7. LOL. When I was a young (I'm thinking mid-60's here), Hamm's put out these silver metal "kegs" for your home refrigerator. I'm thinking that they were about a gallon each. My mom loved that thing -- until she realized she was gaining weight from the beer. She wasn't a lush by any means but even a glass or so a day will pack the calories. We kids always had access to it -- and always left it alone. I guess it's no fun when you aren't sneaking around.
8. The most startling thing is the huge jump taken by Berrios. From preseason 93rd to #24. Well deserved. Sano and Buxton have to be in a holding pattern -- there just isn't anything there to make a new judgment on.
9. It was a rope but did it seem to anyone else like he lingered too long at home plate before getting his b*tt in gear around the bases?
10. You're right. I have to learn to READ: Please note that splits include both major and minor league stats. We have decided that the splits across all levels is more useful than just minor league stats. So we apparently don't have a way of separating out the data. That makes me more likely to rely on Andrew's observation about the other night where he batted lefty against a righty each time. I still think we need more info before we reach any conclusions or get too concerned about what is going on.
11. Okay, I heard back from Andrew Walter (Twins Fan from Afar). Unfortunately he hasn't been at the games lately: I haven't been in a couple weeks, but I will note that he went 0-for-4 in today's game batting lefty each time against a righty. So that would suggest to me that he's back doing it (which I had thought was the case). Also from BB Reference, here are his minor league 2014 splits:
Split▴ G PA AB BA OBP SLG OPS vs LHP as RHB 43 88 69 .290 .432 .377 .809 vs RHP as LHB 30 86 71 .141 .271 .197 .468 vs RHP as RHB 29 78 66 .273 .377 .394 .771
So, it looks to me as if it is still muddled. He has almost the same amount of appearances against RHP's as a LHB and RHB. But BRef doesn't tell us the timing of those AB's.
12. While that's all good to see, hopefully the Twins won't let their resolve to stay afloat and finish better cloud their priorities as the trade deadline approaches. Absolutely the key. I don't want to see them get caught in the "we're competitive" trap that they have somehow imagined for themselves several times in the last 3 years. At this point, I don't care what the record is at the end of the season. I care about who I see playing in the 2nd half. I want to see Meyer and May, Pinto, Santana, maybe some Aaron Hicks if he can have a successful month or so at AAA, maybe a little Tonkin or Darnell and some Vargas in September. I know they need to manage options and service time but let us see the hope for the future. That'll be worth much more to me than a few extra wins on the W-L record.
13. I enjoyed that. Thanks.
14. Right on track there SB but let's just be done at 13-5.
15. Keep practicing that line for tomorrow night, Brian!
16. Wow, the Rockies have some D problems.
17. Well that was a quick half inning. Looking forward to seeing many more of those at TF.
18. Alex Meyer in front of Twins fans for the first time.
19. Vargas due up next in Futures Game (I think).
20. I think Roy's better at it than Bert, though. More sincerity.
21. This is one of those games with everything. Good grief.
22. Berrios was really impressive. I hadn't seen him. Looked so composed. Had some heat and could really move the ball around.
23. Man, Roy and Dick can do a song and dance to sell this team.
