  1. Yes, I think you can make that assumption (not that hope yet). According to Berardino, he is official "day-to-day". This would make me think it was minor but of course, we've held our breaths before. Mike Berardino ‏@MikeBerardino 47m Officially day to day. RT @zukows10: @MikeBerardino @MiracleBaseball How long is he out for?
  2. Mike Berardino ‏@MikeBerardino 2m Aaron Hicks just hit a go-ahead grand slam in the top of the 7th for @RockCats, his 3rd homer at that level this year. My cheery news for the afternoon.
  3. I would think it would be hard for Close to represent any of the parties in the proceedings. It looks like he's a witness to me (and a really important one).
  4. I blame RB .... he just had to say something good about Correia.
  5. And i tmakes me ready for naptime, too.
  6. Happy 76th Birthday, Tony O!
  7. I was on vacation with my cousin's family at Lake Okoboji. The individual cabins didn't have TV so there were lots of us crowded into the game room late at night to watch the moon walk. Seems surreal.
  8. Perhaps but Berrios is really forcing their hand so far. We're talking 2016 so a year and a half from now. Are you going to keep him in AA and AAA for more than that if he continues to excel?
  9. I'm with Tommy on the frogs. I don't want any kind of creepy crawly jumpy things around. Thought this was a good read. It'll be fun to see how their careers (and friendship) track as they move up the ladder.
  10. Perhaps I wasn't clear enough here. I acknowledged that on the non-baseball side of the organization, there has been some outside talent brought in. I'm not going to look at it now but I have looked in the past and I think they did bring in some people at fairly high levels when you look at the names on the roster in "administration". http://minnesota.twins.mlb.com/team/front_office.jsp?c_id=min What concerns me most is that when you look at the names in "baseball operations", they were almost all hired as interns or scouts and then moved up. That's where I feel like an injection of fresh talent and ideas are needed. Not necessarily to change everything but to allow for meaningful re-thinking and updating of the organization's strategies.
  11. I think the Twins need a Rally Hippo tonight. I don't think either the Rhino or the bunny will do it.
  12. And that's what churns my stomach. We've mostly sat on our hands at the trade deadline for 3 years.
  13. Seems to have trouble after an off-day. Probably played golf with his infant son. I haven't eaten anything from Sara Lee for more than 30 years after talking to someone who worked in one of their plants.
  14. Aiken was already taking a discount from "full slot" when he agreed to take $6.5 m (full slot was over $7.9). The difference between full slot and the $6.5 was enough to fund the overage to Nix (and maybe Marshall too). But after Houston saw the medicals, it decided to play hardball and offer Aiken only 40% of slot (about 3.2 million or so) -- thus preserving its right to a replacement pick if Aiken didn't sign. Finally about 5 minutes before the deadline, Houston offered Aiken the $5 million. If Houston hadn't absolutely insulted Aiken by offering just the 40%, Aiken might well have come down to $5 million based on the medicals -- we'll never know because by that point the well was poisoned. If you were ANY player, how much would you want to sign with Houston after the revelations this year about the games they are playing on pressuring players to sell out pre-arb and arb years before they will promote them and after the leaks about their trade strategies? I don't see how any player or his agent could have any trust in Houston's management. My bile isn't sanctimony -- it is watching a course of behavior on the part of management that is FAR LESS than honorable.
  15. Welcome Back Regular Season Baseball!
  16. Not when the $5 million offer wasn't made until after they had agreed on $6 plus; went back to a little over $3 milllon and then didn't get raised to $5 million until a few minutes before the deadline. That's game playing pure and simple. I doubt whether there are many agents who want to deal with the Astros these days. Oh, they'll do it if the money is right for their clients best interests but when combining this mess; the promotion/service time issues and the whole leaked trade negotiations bit from the Astros, their management is coming off as inept.
  17. For whatever reason, the MLBPA is taking a big interest in this: Buster Olney ‏@Buster_ESPN 1h From MLBPA re:Aiken: "Today, two young men should be one step closer to realizing their dreams of becoming Major League ballplayers... "Because of the actions of the … Astros, they are not. The MLBPA, the players and their advisers are exploring all legal options.” Note that the MLBPA is considering legal options as well as the players and their advisers. Houston may ultimately win the legal battle but they are likely to lose the public relations war. Again, we're not talking annual salary here. We're talking a one-time bonus. And we have the Astros actions set against the hardball they've been playing on promotions/extensions/service time. I'm sure the MLBPA wasn't happy with them before this latest mess.
  18. Apparently the $5 million offer didn't get made until 5 minutes before deadline.
  19. Question: In Jim Pohlad's other business ventures, do they only promote from within, never bringing in talent from the outside in the upper ends of the companies? Because that is what it appears has happened with the baseball operations of the Twins. (I will not say that about the non-baseball side of the organization because there do appear to be some hires at mid-to high levels there). But on the baseball side, what we see is constant promotion from within. They did bring Wayne Krivsky in but again, that was a retread. Even with the few coaching changes, they brought in people with long histories with the organization. That is my primary complaint and the reason I think wholesale changes are needed now. They became mired in the same old, same old. That doesn't mean that they didn't grow in their jobs but it is not the same thing as having new talent brought in at a high enough level that they might challenge some of the team's continuing practices. Fresh eyes, ears, and thought are desperately needed in the baseball side of the operations. And it has stagnated so much that I think it needs a major overhaul. That might not have been necessary had they refreshed the stagnant pool over time but they didn't do that. Now it smells like a dead pool that never gets any inflow.
  20. It is one time money -- that's what just kills me on this. We're not talking about $6+ million each year. We're talking a one-time bonus. And now losing Nix and Marshall as well. It's mind-boggling. One interesting tweet: Evan Drellich ‏@EvanDrellich 28m “We tried to engage Casey Close three times today … there was no interest” — GM Jeff Luhnow tells the Chronicle Jon Heyman ‏@JonHeymanCBS 24m #astros offered about $5M to try to sign aiken. wind up signing neither aiken nor niix. @jimcallisMLB 1st Was the well just so poisoned that there was no way to have any trust? It is really pretty crazy (from both sides).
  21. Parker, was reading elsewhere about Longoria's power outage this year. Any similarities between Mauer's struggles and Longoria's? I see his BA is only down slightly but his SLG and OPS are down more significantly. I want the Twins to win but then I think that they will be caught in the trap of thinking they shouldn't be sellers -- and I really don't think that they are playoff caliber (or have much potential to be playoff caliber this year). I just want them to look at everything with a clear eye and not be confused by what they should do (regardless of what they tell the fans). Always look forward to seeing what Spencer Tracy's look-alike has up his sleeve.
  22. Suzuki As I've said previously I'm not dead set one way or another (trade him or extend him). I am dead set on doing SOMETHING by the end of August (and I'd really prefer it be by the trade deadline). A two year extension doesn't bother me. Three years makes me gulp. I freely acknowledge that the Twins would be buying high but in terms of $$$, I don't really think that matters. But I will probably throw something through the TV or computer screen if they sit on their hands and don't do SOMETHING with Suzuki before 8/31. Morales I'd prefer he be dealt if there is any type of decent return. I will concede the possible advantage of mentoring the up and coming Latin players. I'm just not sure it outweighs the need for flexibility with the DH position as the roster is constructed. Willingham So long, Josh. I've enjoyed your HRs at TF. Dozier I don't see him ever moving back to SS. If they could get a fabulous return, the Twins should be open to a trade (I think they should ALWAYS be open to the possibility of a trade for any player). But I really don't see it happening. I also don't see any need for a mid-season extension. If they want to talk about buying out years this fall/winter, that's fine.
  23. Very interesting that Miller's piece and Souhan's column were published on the same day. Just how tired is Jim Pohlad of what's been happening? Is he willing to make major changes in the old boys network that has dominated this organization? Is the way they've been doing for 30 years working?
