  1. http://www.fangraphs.com/library/war/differences-fwar-rwar/ Beyond WAR though, Nolasco has the heavy advantage in: k/9, FIP, xFIP and age. The only thing Arroyo really has is ERA (which is basically what the b-ref WAR is based on) Basically what it comes down to is that Arroyo basically looks like Pavano (not a bad thing), but just more of the same that the Twins currently posses (low strike out pitchers), again, if they can add a front of the rotation guy like Garza then by all means bring in Arroyo to be your #4. With Nolasco I at least see a guy who pitched well after a change of scenary who has the potential to be a solid #3, or if things come in line with his xFIP/FIP a decent #2. In a perfect world I would sign Garza and Nolasco. (Make no mistake, the Twins have plenty of money to do this as it would cost about 30 mil a year) Garza Nolasco Meyer Gibson Deduno/Correia/etc Looks like a pretty solid rotation to me over the next few years.
  2. While it is possible Nolasco COULD be for twice as many years, it should be noted that he is looking for 4 and Arroyo is looking for 3. There is nothing that says Nolasco can't be brought in for 3 years. Also, he is a much better better pitcher then Arroyo. His FIP and xFIP are significantly better than Arroyo over the past 4-5 years. Arroyo had a total WAR of 5.0 over the last 5 years while Nolasco has a 13 WAR over the past 5 years and had better season over season WAR then Arroyo in 4 of the 5 years. Additionally, Nolasco is 7 years younger than Arroyo, and at age 37 Arroyo is a very good candidate for significant regression (this coming off a season where his WAR was a paltry 0.8) Nolasco is still in his prime at age 30 and coming off 3.1, 2.5 and 3.0 WAR years the last 3. Also, Nolasco also strikes out a decent number of batters, and the Twins DESPERATELY need someone like that on the staff, Arroyo is nothing more than a slightly better version of Correia. So yeah, Noalsco would cost more money, but that is because he is a significantly better pitcher.
  3. It wouldn't have been the worst signing in the world. I wouldn't have gone 2.5 million, but for 1-1.5 million I certainly would have brought him in and just jettison Swarzak.
  4. Why is that a major difference? If communication is the issue (which honestly I don't see as an issue at all personally) then why does it matter where he was born at? Are you implying that only Latin coaches can coach Latin players? Because that notion seems a little over the top and ridiculous. Also the Twins aren't the only team without a "Latino" bench coach or whatever.
  5. Do the twins have any players who can't speak English? I don't see why they need to enact some bizarre affirmative action just to get somebody who speaks Spanish. I'm not a fan of some of the twins coaches, but I am certainly glad they added molitor.
  6. 2 years, 18 mil for Arroyo only if they manage to sign Garza or another high upside pitcher as well. If not, let Arroyo walk and simply sign Nolasco, who will cost a bit more but has more upside and is younger then Arroyo.
  7. This isn't a slight on you, but people who do the whole "I am canceling my season tickets" really bug me and come off as very fairweather-ish. Of course it's your right to cancel tickets/not pay for them etc, but is it really necessary to state it to everyone? I am pretty sure everyone who watches the Twins are who are involved are well aware that they have been downright terrible the past few years, people stating that "they are canceling tickets" doesn't change that and doesn't suddenly make St Peter and Ryan realize that 90+ loses a year isn't acceptable. Frankly, I don't mind 2-3 bad seasons, especially since the Twins look to be on the upswing soon (perhaps even this year), I am much more bothered by the fact we won the division 6 out of the 9 years prior and only won ONE playoff series. Every team not named the Yankees or Red Sox go through these 2-3 year rough patches to rebuild.
  8. This team can contend as early as 2015, sign a guy like garza now for 4-5 years so you have that in place for your "run", grab another high risk high reward guy like Johnson and you suddenly have something to build on moving forward. Aim for .500 in 2014, and then aim for 90 wins in 2015.
  9. Who was the last 2nd round pick the twins had who really made a difference?
  10. 2 years for Kazmir. 4 years for Hughes.
  11. Correia was signed pretty early IIRC And Worley appeared to be a nice pick up at the time, Revere a 4th OF wasn't ever going to fetch much, and Worley at least had success at the major league level. May was the main piece of that trade though.
  12. That would have been a terrible trade for the Cards.
  13. No that wouldn't get it done, and yes I would pull the trigger on that trade in a heartbeat if it would get it done.
  14. Apparently the Cards are shopping him, anyone else think the Twins should take a run at him? I imagine they would ask for Sano or Buxton, who both would be off the table IMO at this point, as they are the #1 and #3 guys heading into this season. However, could a deal be made around: Stewart+Rosario+more?
  15. I'm pretty sure most of us could handle "losing" out on Arroyo if he signs somewhere else quickly. The guy is nothing special and is a dime a dozen type pitcher, he is 37 years old and has no upside at this point in his career. He will cost more then 10 mil over 2 years, most likely it will be close to double that, sure, he will give you innings, and if the Twins had 4 young pitchers in the rotation then Arroyo would be a great fit, however, the Twins already have an innings eater in Correia and several other non strike out guys.
  16. The problem with that is you actually have to sign "good" pitching, also I have never been a huge fan of that, if you are going to drop 10-12 million on a guy, just for the purpose of trading him several months later, why not just use that 10-12 million and sign some international players or something?
  17. Short. Sample. Size. And you are mistaken, in that short sample size he was actually very bad defensively according to the stats. I will say it again, there is a reason why the Twins: 1. Had Pinto DH half of his games at AA. 2. Are actively looking for a C on the Free Agent Market. They realize that Pinto frankly isn't good enough defensively to be the every day C, again, he does have the potential to be a "better" Doumit as a guy who can catch when needed and DH when needed, but I think people need to start to realize that it's highly unlikely that Pinto becomes the every day catcher.
  18. Arroyo is just more of the same, It will be very disappointing if this is Ryan's big splash.
  19. I think they just realize that Doumit is a very poor catcher defensively and if called upon would not be a realistic answer as the primary catcher. AJ is nothing earth shattering, but he is still solid defensively, can handle the "primary catcher role" and still has a solid OPS (.722 94+ last year, .827 120+ the year before) and 15-20 HR power. If anything the interest in AJ and Salty indicates to me that they aren't confident at all that Pinto can stick defensively full time at Catcher. I know we all want to believe that Pinto could become that every day catcher with a .850 OPS behind the dish, but the fact that the Twins DH'ed him half of the time at AA shows how they feel about him full time behind the dish. If anything, I think Pinto could hopefully become a "better" Ryan Doumit, 100 games at DH etc and 40 games or so behind the dish as back up C.
  20. Pffft.... now he has to spend more time with this: Can't blame him
  21. Itstimetotakeit?
  22. Exactly, they could sign Salty, two legit SP (and one lottery ticket-Johan) and still have enough left for a DH/OF type (5-6 mil) Also, if Pinto is as good as people claim he is, there will still be plenty of at bats for him.
  23. Well other then the whole "catching and throwing" part of being a catcher he wouldn't be bad
  24. I'm not sure where else you want this impact bat: SS- There really aren't any. 3B- Isn't Sano going to be manning 3B by June? What impact bat will sign a one year deal? OF- Hicks and Buxton will be up soon, so again, who do you sign? Willingham already takes take of the one year stop gap "power bat" The Twins frankly aren't going to sign more then 3 pitchers absolute max total, and at the very least one would be a bargin bin signing (if not two) You can have enough money to sign a couple decent contracts on pitchers, as well as Salty and another OF if you need. I like Pinto, but there is prob a reason he DH'ed so much in the minors, I really don't see what anyone sees in Herrmann that makes them think he is anything more then a backup.
