  1. Money heals all wounds.
  2. Jones was a nice story, but at this point offers very little upside for this team. You could do worse than Jones for sure and he will catch on somewhere most likely, however this team already has a few no/little defensive value/bigger bats on the roster: Doumit, Willingham, Pinto even.
  3. I would be fine with bringing in Min as long as he is the 2nd best pitcher the Twins sign this off-season. (I put him above the Kazmir's, Arroyos, and maybe even Nolasco personally)
  4. Got it, so all the experts who say that Salty is a good catcher, all the stats that back it up and the projections which year in and year out are very accurate are all foolish. Meanwhile a guy that hit .710 and has no baserunning or defensive value anywhere is going to be a legit option for teams as a DH? Don't get me wrong, I like Doumit and I think he can rebound a bit, however at this stage he is nothing more than a backup/nice bench bat and/or possibly a one year stop gap at DH/1B for a team, however you aren't going to get anything of value for that. You'd be much better off just taking a flyer on Corey Hart.
  5. The problem isn't Ellsbury, its the fact you would have to give him at least 6 years (7 most likely), where he is most certainly going to lose value on the base paths and defensively during that time. Additionally there are injury questions with him as well, which alone doesn't make him a safer "player" If you could get him for 3-4 years, then by all means grab him, but Ellsbury isn't the type of guy the Twins need to be handing out $153+ million to, especially when you have Buxton waiting in the wings. And yes, moving Ellsbury to LF takes away a lot of his value as CF is the 2nd or 3rd hardest position (behind C, SS) and LF is the easiest or 2nd easiest (1B and RF are the same more or less)
  6. If Doumit isn't good enough to play catcher for one of the worst teams in baseball (twins) then what makes you think some other team would settle for him and play him at catcher? In re: Salty: Apparently Steamer's projections are foolish since they have him as a 2.9 WAR player next year. I'd glady take a wager on Salty's 2016 year vs Doumits 2014 year.
  7. Escobar and Florimon won't net you much of anything in the trade. The fact they are starting/playing SS in the MLB are perfect examples of why SS is so thin currently. Don't get me wrong, I like Florimon as a stop gap for a year or two, but that is all he is IMO as I don't see him ever topping 1.5 WAR (IMO anything below a 2.0 you need to constantly be looking for an upgrade)
  8. I understand your points, however, Arroyo isn't the type of guy you over pay for. Considering: 1. He is getting old, and 100 years of baseball data indicates he is a very very strong candidate for regression each passing season. 2. He isn't anything special, yeah he is a nice #4/#5 but those aren't that difficult to find. If you want to sign him to a 2 year/20 mil deal, fine, I can live with that as its fair. But to overpay him just to convince him to sign here is wrong, again if you are going to do it, do it with a player that can exceed the contract. (Garza, Kazmir, Nolasco perhaps?)
  9. Can we please do away with the "Salty...historically...inconsistent?" because it really isn't relevant at all when he has shown consistency in his last 3 seasons (not surprisingly in the least coincides with him entering his prime) He matured, changed his approach and became a better hitter, it happens a lot and 3 years worth of sample size show this.
  10. Overpaying in money and more importantly years for a mediocre player is a bad idea, the absolute best case scenario is that he earns the contract and nothing more. Most likely the 3rd year bites you in the ass in this case. If you are going to over pay, it needs to be for someone who has the ability to not only earn the contract, but exceed it by a pretty decent margin if things break the right way.
  11. I'm sorry, what does Trevor Plouffe have to do with any of this? If Plouffe was a good defensive catcher then I suppose the comparison would make sense. Heck if Plouffe was even good defensively I suppose that comparison would at least be a tiny bit relevant, however, Plouffe has been poor defensively at third base and has only put up a combined 0.1 WAR in the last 3 years. Additionally, the average third baseman hits quite a bit better than the average catcher. It's comparing apples and oranges at this point.
  12. Saying that Doumit would be an option at Catcher for this team moving forward doesn't make it so. Doumit simply put is a very poor catcher defensively in every ascertainable stat/eye test. He put up a 0.1 WAR last season overall and is projected to be a 0.0 WAR player this year, putting a replacement level catcher in over a guy like Salty (3.0 WAR) makes zero sense.
  13. Your solution if I am correct is to sign Ellsbury? Who suddenly loses a ton of value when you move him from CF (which you would do the second Buxton was called up) not to mention he is much more sporadic of a hitter than Salty and would cost over twice as much. The one OF I wouldn't mind taking a run at would be Cruz, I would offer him 2/30 or 1/16 to rebuild his value. (Though he would prob just go back to Texas at those rates) Not sure I would go three years due to defense and HGH regression question, but it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world I suppose.
  14. Salty's numbers haven't been sporadic at all the past 3 years, I am not to concerned at this point how he was hitting when he was 22, 23 and 24. Assuming last year was an aberration, you can still expect him to put up a .740 OPS which I am pretty sure is well within the top 10 of catchers year in and year out. The Twins can spend $10 mil on a catcher and still have plenty of money to sign pitchers in 2014 and 2015. Frankly, the Twins aren't going to go sign 3-4 legit starting pitchers this off season and it isn't feasible. At some point they have to count on a couple guys like Meyer and Gibson moving forward.
  15. OF is the last place this team should be spending money on FA wise at this point (unless you can get Choo on a friendly deal, which is highly doubtful) I know its pre-mature but I am confident in penciling in Buxton and Arcia for the OF for the next few years. That leaves one spot open, Willingham is a decent stop gap for 2014, and then you have Hicks & Rosario who could be up and ready for the start of 2015 as well. IF those guys bomb out this year or regress, then perhaps you go out and get an OF bat next year on the FA market (there are always plenty of OF's in the FA market)
  16. Couple things, 4.10 ERA is quite a bit less than Correias career numbers (many of which where helped in the NL/pitcher friendly parks) I would argue that Hughes has actually had 3 good (but not great) seasons in 2009, 2010 and 2012. Additionally I think a change of scenery could be perfect for him, before he ever pitched in the big leagues he was already being named the savior of the Yankees rotation, which is a TON of pressure, additionally the Yankees screwed with him a bit by moving him in and out of the rotation when he first came up. I think by going somewhere like Minnesota, the lack of media/pressure/bright lights could be beneficial to him (see Pavano?) additionally he does have pretty nice stuff and is able to strike a good number of guys out, his main problem has been the long ball, so there is a chance Anderson could help him out on that, and Target field would be beneficial as well. (Especially with a defense that could include Hicks and Buxton) for at least 2 of the 3 years of his contract. Could he not get better and just stay the same? Sure, its a risk, but unlike a signing like Correia, Arroyo etc there is a good amount of upside if things click.
  17. Willingham and Doumit are both gone after this year, and while Doumit appears to not serve a major purpose at this point, Willingham can still be a nice player for the 2014 Twins, its not like there are 3 superior options for the OF.....yet. Hopefully the Twins can get something of value for Willingham/Doumit at the deadline if both rebound a bit. However, I'm not overly concerned since neither is really blocking anyone. (A case could be made for Doumit/Pinto I suppose) Mastro is harmless, he is a 4th OF who could easily be replaced by Pressley. Kazmir would be a much superior option to Santana, however I don't think he would come on a minimal deal like that and I don't think there is any realistic chance the Twins sign 3 "legit" SP this off-season.
  18. Doumit is not an everyday catcher....he's a borderline back up one at this point
  19. I like McCann a lot, but he wasn't a fit for the Twins. I am all about giving out some large contracts, but if the Twins are going to be giving out 5 years to a player, it needs to be a high upside pitcher. (or a SS-which won't happen anytime soon)
  20. Give me a freaking break. Can we stop with these notions that the Twins are somehow racist or whatever?
  21. I don't mind AJ, but IMO the issue with him is age, he is going to be 37 and if you sign him for 2 years at best he is going to put up his career line, at least with a guy like Salty there is the the potential that he continues to improve. If AJ would come here on a one year 5 mil dollar deal, sure, thats a fine back up plan.
  22. Additionally it would be nice to see the Twins actually buying high on a player for once, instead of scraping the bottom of the barrel for guys way past their primes.
  23. 99% chance a RP
  24. Also of note: Hughes in Yankee stadium: 4.98 ERA in his career. Hughes on the road: 4.10 ERA in his career. He is a flyball pitcher, so moving to Minnesota would help.
  25. Yup, also he would never agree to a Liriano type deal (hell, Liriano was a fool to agree to it, but only did because of the injury) I'd even consider going 4 years on Hughes for a lower AAV (see: Vargas)
