  1. I wouldn't go as far to call Guerrier a "bust", he did make it to the major league roster and prior to his last game he did have a 2.67 ERA in 26 appearances. Again his k/9 etc weren't that sexy, but his results were "solid" It was definitely time for him to go though as his luck definitely ran out. Having Bartlett on the roster made zero sense to be honest. I don't mind taking a flyer on Kubel, especially after his "hot" start. I'd much rather give a guy a 2 mil contract for one year then give a large deal to a corner OF that ultimately just blocks other players. At the end of the day though, none of those players ultimately blocked anyone.
  2. I certainly am not going to root for them to lose, I think and hope they get as close to .500 as possible. If they can manage to go .500 they theoretically are only 6 or 7 games away next year to making the playoffs. Those 6 wins could be picked up on the FA market, or a combination of: Mauer, Buxton, Sano, Meyer, May, etc having full seasons (or close to full seasons) in 2015.
  3. Nice series win, hopefully can keep this momentum going.
  4. They were making an insane amount of money over there for a very long time, then the whole 300+ million Turner deal etc. But my Rocketpig is it just such crappy content. However they weren't the only ones doing it, SB Nation, Fansided etc did the same model, at the end of the day you have a TON of kids who want to write about sports, the majority of them aren't very good, however it is possible to get paid at those places, my old college roomate is the editor over at Fansided these days and draws a salary+perks etc, however he had to work his way up the hard way for 2 years barely getting paid anything (I think a $1 per 1,000 unique visitors capped at $600 a month) I do give a ton of credit to anyone who will write for little to no money.
  5. Meyer will be up right at or shortly after July 31st (Assuming he has no injury etc set backs)
  6. No they just overpay for them on the trade market, while that doesn't make them a "lone wolf" it puts them in some undesirable company.
  7. The problem with the AJ trade a few years ago is that at the time it didn't exactly look like some huge no brainer obviously from the jump it was a good trade for the Twins to make since they didn't need AJ, and at the very least they got some "intriguing names back" however its important to remember at when the trade was made: Liriano the centerpiece of the deal was I think the 90th rated minor leaguer the year prior to getting traded, however arm injuries basically derailed that entire season, so he wasn't exactly some high "can't miss" arm and only had reached A ball. At that point he was well outside the top 100. Nathan was a 28 year old middle reliever coming off a nice year, but prior to that had very pedestrian numbers in the majors and minors. Not exactly a "can't miss guy". Boof! Was a top 25 prospect two years prior to the Giants trading him, by that point though still a "solid prospect" had fallen off the top 100 map completely and his numbers/stuff projected to be a back end guy at best. Luckily the Twins hit lightning in a bottle with both Liriano and Nathan, if the Twins were to entertain a package for Perkins it would have to start with at least one can't miss player. It couldn't be two guys with no track records or lightning in a bottle types. Now...if we are talking about a package for Willingham/Suzuki/Morales...then a lightning in a bottle type (see: Liriano) would make more sense.
  8. I keep seeing ads for soccer and I HATE Soccer, plz fix ASAP.
  9. No, I just didn't find the post very funny. Though it is a nice change of pace from a bit of the doom and gloom.
  10. I'm guessing it was still a little sore/swollen and they did it out of an abundance of caution?
  11. You forgot: Matt Capps 2011-2012 Minnesota Twins: 11.6 million.
  12. And it gets so much and much worse as you age, which sucks! Even more so to the fact that Buxton is young and his endorphins/adrenaline etc kick in quicker. We can debate all day about things the Twins may or may not have done medically correctly, this simply is not one of them unless you want them to wrap Buxton up in bubble wrap and football pads before he takes each at bat.
  13. Players/coaches would never blast a catcher for his play (cough: AJ/Boston Cough)
  14. Agreed. The only teams to really do this are the Miami Marlins, I'm not sure that is an org we want to emulate as they are going to have a really really tough time attracting FA in the future.
  15. ERA, WHIP, K/BB etc things that point to what will happen in the future vs a somewhat small sample size focusing on one non ideal stat "Blown save" Keep in mind, a blown save can be giving up 1 run, or giving up 3 runs, not every Blown Save is the same. Also back to your Kimbrel vs Cishek comparison: Kimbrel is 30 of 34 in save opps (88%) Cishek is 22 of 25 (88%) So at least balance the numbers if you are going to try to make that argument. Additionally in his 4 blown saves (and 1 loss that wasn't a BS) Kimbrel has given up exactly 4 ER, what does that tell us? That blown save number is probably more a cause of bad luck then anything else. In Cisheks 3 blown saves he gave up a total of seven runs (2+2+3) in less than 3 innings. Additionally in his other two losses (which weren't blown saves) he gave up 6 runs in 1.2 innings. The numbers all over the place clearly tilt in Kimbrels direction very heavily and likely will continue the rest of this year on forward. (Ditto with Perkins vs a more "lucky" short sample size closer) Now I will agree all day that closers are used incorrectly at times (I would rather they bring Perkins into a 1-0 game in the 8th against the 3-4-5 hitters instead of "waiting" til the 9th) and that saves aren't the best stat, however, with that said I still stand by the fact that Perkins is one of the best 5 RP in baseball year in and year out, that has a ton of value IMHO.
  16. Oh yeah, I think the Twins definitely have some potential pieces in the pen for the future. The awesome thing is the pen other than Perkins and his very very modest salary, could be put together by a bunch of guys who are cheap/controllable: Fien, Tonkin, Burdi, Achter, etc thus opening up those dollars in the future to fill other holes/extend guys. You are right, those teams had some very good bullpens from top to bottom, that is a very under-rated thing I believe. Those last 9-12 outs can make up 33-40% of a given game!
  17. Sounds like another great excuse for a "work trip" to Minneapolis.
  18. It sucks because we want to see him play, however as long as its not broken he will be fine. As someone who got hit in the wrist in baseball two years ago, I can tell you that it hurts a helluva a lot worse the next day then it does at the time and another main issue is the swelling. Of course that guy was throwing 80 MPH tops where Buxton prob got hit by 90+ so it has to be even more swollen. The good news is it isn't broken, and it's hard to fault the Twins for "keeping him in" players get hit literally every day in baseball and stay in the game, I get that he is a top prospect and all of that, but you can't treat him like fragile China. If he said he was fine, could still hold the bat/make the throws etc then he was fine at the time. No real cause for alarm IMO, just some more "bad luck". Better to get it out of the way in the minors instead of the majors though! Give me a "lost" season in A+ then in the majors any day of the week (see Mauer's rookie season)
  19. I'd put Willingham and Correia at about 90% chances. Morales, Burton and Suzuki around 50% (Suzuki I still think might sign) and Perkins at 1%
  20. Thanks! Good to see some of the old regulars back around, now just need to get Ofx, Neal and AJ to join in the fun.
  21. Call me when he wins the coveted battle your tail off award from Gardy. In all seriousness though, good for him, I look forward to him being one of the Twins leaders on and off the field as they return to glory in 2015-2018.
  22. Agreed, and as a top 5 closer that makes him one of the best 5 relief pitchers in baseball. Those types just don't grow on trees. And you certainly don't trade them just to trade them (especially when you have them at a well below market level contract for the next 4+ seasons!) And yes, as some have pointed out the Twins have had a lot of luck over the years in re: to closers: Nathan, Eddie G, Perkins etc all coming from sort of "out of nowhere". However you don't have to look to far in the past or to hard in the present to see how there are several teams every year that lose a significant amount of games due to closer issues.
