    I do think Paddack is going to, at minimum, cover the production that Maeda had in 2023 (100ish innings, low 4 era) and there is a chance he improves on that level. I'm curious who the primary addition will be. This offseason is set to be super interesting for a ton of reasons.

    I definitely want them to bring in at least one major league contract reliever who will be on the roster opening day. But Trivino would ALSO be a great add.

    I mean, Falvey's direct quote was that he didn't anticipate the 2024 payroll equalling where they got to in 2023. It wasn't his quote that gave the range of 125-140. That's just an educated guess (or maybe from other sources) that Dan Hayes reported. I'm sure there is thought behind that range/guess, but that's NOT a direct quote from Falvey. Or at least, I haven't seen it that way.

    I never meant to say he ONLY has 2 pitches. I just think if he were to go to the bullpen and ONLY throw his 2 best pitches (cutter being one of them) he is probably more effective than using 3 pitches in a starting role. They are starting to show (in my opinion) quite a lot of starting depth that should begin the year at AA. Otherwise, getting more pitching is always a good thing.

    Nah, I never expected him back. If the pen, in my opinion, consists of Duran, Jax, Funderburk, Thielbar, Stewart and Varland, then I'd imagine they can add a long guy (or have Winder be that) and another guy right? So something like Ryne Stanek and Nick Martinez, to me, would fill out the bullpen. But there are certainly lots of other options. But yeah, opening day, if the bullpen consists of that, I'd say they would have a STRONG bullpen.

    I can see these happening, but I agree with the previous commenter; Bader AND Carlson on this team don't make a ton of sense to me. I do think Keller would be a dream get, and if the Twins were to acquire him, I think it would hurt more in terms of prospects. I'd imagine Pittsburgh would want prospect arms coming back instead of hitters with Wallner. Something like Festa and Raya with Wallner probably gets the conversation started.

    Yeah, I expect that too, but they will "spend" players/prospects/assets in that sense to acquire instead of money on the free agent market. For example, let's say they hypothetically add Edward Cabrera of the Marlins (this is JUST hypothetical.) They will have to trade a few decent prospects for him, right (don't worry about the player's right now, this is JUST hypothetical.) Cabrera is set to make between 800k and 1million for 2024. That number won't make a dent in the payroll, right? IF instead they were to trade for Tyler Glasnow (who is set to earn 25 million in 2024) then that would have an affect on 2024 payroll right?

    Not that I've seen, but since Dan Hayes reported they are optimistic on something, I have to think SOMETHING is coming in the next couple of months on that front.

    Hard to guess to much in November when really, this is all a hurry up and wait right? I'd imagine the moves the Twins make won't happen until January at the earliest, or at least that's when they usually start. I just want the moves to happen NOW :) But yeah, I'd guess they are talking more in the 140 range at minimum, and I personally wouldn't be shocked if they did end up at 160. So the hand-wringing, I just can't do that on 11/29. Hand-wringing over roster/payroll, for me, will happen a week before opening day.

    I will agree that Varland is definitely on the roster. I think he is more of a weapon out of the pen, but good that he can go multiple innings. Either way, excited to have him. And yes, at least one if not multiple guys is the plan. Something like... 1) Trade for a name guy (Seattle, Miami, Mitch Keller, Toronto, etc, someone.) 2) Sign a long guy/6th starter (Nick Martinez, formerly of the Rangers, then Japan for a number of years, and the last few with the Padres, so he has connections to both Levine and Jayce Tingler, is a guy I'd watch for here. He was really good when he started last year for the Padres, and otherwise is a great long man option.) 3) At least one priority minor league signing, who probably starts the year at Saint Paul. Think Eric Lauer, formerly of the Brewers, or Brad Keller, formerly of the Royals. 4) Bring in one decent reliever too, maybe Ryne Stanek (formerly of the Rays and Astros.) IF this was the pitching offseason, along with shedding PROBABLY at least Farmer, the payroll would be right where all of us armchair gm's are expecting it to end up.

    If you think they would buy a big name free agent, when they have never ever done that, I don't know what to tell you. There's always money in the banana stand. :) But yes, I do agree that PROBABLY 2 of Farmer/Polanco/Kepler will be traded. And I also agree a few pitchers will be brought in. Depending on salary, their payroll will PROBABLY be in the 140 range right? To me, it is obvious there is room.

    Whole lot of offseason to go. I'd imagine 2 starters, if not 3, will be added that will go ahead of him in the starting depth chart. One bigger name, one other guy who could also be a long man, and probably a minor league signing that is paid extra who will start in St. Paul. I'd be willing to eat crow (not literally on this) but I see zero way that Varland is in the rotation to start the year, or even starting in St. Paul in the rotation. He is a really strong bullpen piece.

    Bullpen he is a weapon. Starting he is a #5 without a ton of room to grow. I guess I'd be shocked if he is a starter again to be honest. Too much ability when he is a 2 pitch pitcher out of the bullpen.

    I like the outside-the-box thinking here. I actually would be even more open to this idea IF he would be open to grabbing an outfielder's glove, and/or would be open to moving around to 2b and 3b as a utility type defender. IF he could handle LF/2B/3B, I think his bat COULD help for a 1 year deal. I'd imagine he would prefer to play SS for one year to hopefully get a new contract next offseason, so if that is the case I don't see him here.

    Draft picks can also be turned into assets to trade for known quantities. Example A; how the Twins acquired Sonny Gray initially. Just because the Twins chose to not pay (or overpay) for Gray's free agent years when he is 35-37 years old doesn't mean that the process for how they got him was bad. Having more assets to use to acquire known quantities is a good thing.

    Most people would argue that HOW Gray was handled this year helped him get the free agent contract he did. This line of thinking, what you wrote, doesn't mesh well with reality for me. Do you really think the Cardinals are less analytical in their approach than the Twins are? Really? I mean, Twins starting pitchers were 4th in total innings pitched this past year, and Saint Louis was 14th. Do you think Gray is going to throw MORE innings in any of the next 3 seasons than he did in 2023 (184 innings.) If I were betting, I'd take that under for him. Wish him well on his contract though :)

    Whatever they do this offseason, hopefully it doesn't in any way include Mike Clevinger. Yuck. But yeah, my guess is they trade for a good starter, as well as bring in at least one if not multiple guys on minor league contracts for depth. They PROBABLY want to package Polanco and a prospect for someone, and maybe that's ok.
