  1. Nicely written, Brandon. I think, and this is only partial hindsight, that the idea of bringing up two long relievers to mop up potential bad starts by the Twins three best starters was incredibly bad mojo for the team. Rucinzki had already shown himself to be mediocre, and Wheeler hadn't ever relieved, so they weren't the types to bring in as late inning replacements. Hildy, Busenitz, or Wimmers would have been of a lot more use in those two games that looked winnable. Water under the bridge, at this point. Here's hoping everyone from the players up to the top managers learned something, so this mistake isn't repeated.
  2. I like this perspective. Should be fun to see how Molly uses them (or doesn't.)
  3. Good news. While he may have been DFA'd, "Wilson", along with Cuddyer, will represent the Twins at the Draft. Make a good pick, old friend. *This is per MLB.com's Twins home page right now. When you click on the headline, which says "Cuddyer, Wilson to represent Twins at draft," it just takes you to the general article, which is this: http://m.twins.mlb.com/news/article/233740060/george-brett-2017-mlb-draft-representatives/?topicId=27118388 Apparently, someone named John Wilson will be there along with Cuddy on behalf of the Twins. Mostly likely he is an old ham radio operator or teletype expert with a direct link to Twins HQ.
  4. Hey! That was my post. Not really a clamor, though. More of a wistful lament, maybe a pensively hopeful whimper into a previous era, plaintively appealing to the ghost of Perkins past. Anyway, Internet forums aren't exactly known for a robust ability to interpret tone. Since we've piled on just about everybody, why not Duffey? 4 runs, no outs? Blech. He's infected too.
  5. That was a bloodbath. Like the Twins, I think I will make spaghetti for dinner. Pressly had a chance to move up the chain this year. Ce le vie. Wimmers. Change the m's to n's? Hmm... Whammers? My sentences are getting progressively shorter. As is my reservoir of patience. Where are you Glen? Free Jay.
  6. I'll add my two vents to the whine line: I hope Berrios doesn't overpitch today and get shelled, which will probably necessitate a Wheeler long relief appearance, which will also be a shelling. I guess I understand the need for the ol' mop up long reliever, but two of them? Why Wheeler if Rucinzki gets DFA'd immediately? Couldn't they have used that open slot on someone with relief experience and strikes people out? Does that person exist? Still: Chargois, Burdi, Jay, Reed. Those guys were supposed to be ready and able to help this year, and they are all hurt. Even a conservative FO would only anticipate half that much pain. Time to make lemonade...
  7. I know saves are overrated, blah blah. Man, what a chain reaction that blown one by Kintzler set off, though. Gassed bullpen, Vargas' big league dreams in jeopardy, Rucinzki's likely gone forever. Berrios will probably put too much pressure on himself tomorrow and get shelled, who knows how Hector will look. Nonetheless, I feel like this team has some fire in its gut. Last year, it would have been woe is me, and they would have curled in a ball and kept getting kicked. I feel like this group has some fight, however, and can find a way to regroup. We shall see. These are the growing pains of true champions, however.
  8. Funny line from the new Ferrell/Poehlet movie: "this says I've got $401,000 in the bank. "No, it says you have a 401K plan"
  9. fThis season is kind of like a Christmas where you travelled so you had early presents and late presents and whatnot. Fun to see Thorpe back and pitching well, Jay back and pitching, and Gonsalves ready to go tomorrow. Looking forward to some of the kids to get started, Javier in particular. Davis has a boomstick. Is he an ABWIV?
  10. I once had an argument with a math teacher over what I considered an odd number...8 is pretty weird. (Wright) The licorice was a big tub of Red Vines right? Although, in this analogy, something slightly not perfect has to happen near the end, to equate to the two homers Berrios gave up. So maybe the licorice was Twizzlers.
  11. if the Twins make it 18 games over .500 and then go .500 the rest of the way, I don't like their playoff chances. I'm not expecting a championship this year (that would be nice!) but playing like winners the whole year would be my greatest hope.
  12. Curtiss is like clockwork. Nice to see Romero with a strong start. Whitefield is a gamer. Seems like Goodrum has been hitting of late, but his avg. won't budge.
  13. Well played on the DeLeon mention. I'd say more, except for karma. Nice looking line for Wheeler. Maybe the Twins should consider Wells for fifth starter, seeing as he is getting major league experience.
  14. I actually agree. I was just trying to make an argument that throwing him repeatedly in the fire last year didn't work, and the Twins wisely corrected course and held him back a little this spring. Good for them. I'm happy. If the Twins miss the playoffs by that Tepesch debacle, I'll still be happy.
  15. Berrios, like many others before him, looked like he was going into the failed development column last year. whatever they did, good job.
  16. What does Davis have to do to get hitter of the day? Hit THREE homeruns? In a season where Gonsalves has been hurt, Stewart flopped, Jay went to the pen, and Romero hasn't dominated, I am probably over-excited to see Thorpe back.
  17. Nice piece, Tom. I kind of like the your idea to go with three catchers, with the idea that it is an apprenticeship. If Garver is going to be a part of the next winning Twins org, he needs to be up and participating. Yeah, it would suck to have three, but the way you describe it kind of works for me, especially if Garver could DH a bit. Didn't the Cubs roster 3 last year? Anyway, this project wouldn't start quite yet anyway.
  18. No more Kyles, please. Go Greene. Like the much chased but never cornered definition of an "ace," generational talent can mean whatever you want it to, and won't be quantified with a number. A generation from now, will people remember and talk about someone? That is partly market and win related, but I like the upside of this kid. After reading the MLBTR article on Arizona's draft of 2009, which included a few thoughts about Trout that highlighted his character and athleticism, I'm loathe to miss out on a similar opportunity.
  19. Rucinski is cannon fodder. If things go south, they could ask him to pitch multiple innings while absorbing a shellacking.
  20. Note: The Twins currently have the 10th best record in the league. Two days ago, they were 7th. Just saying. Baseball is fluid. Great article on MLBTR about drafting: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2017/05/inside-the-draft-room-the-2009-diamondbacks.html Inside look at Arizona's draft, and all the different little decisions and happenstances that go into these things. Paraphrase: "We had one of our top scouts who happened to live nearby, so he saw more of player X, so we felt good going that way." The D-backs and the 15th and 16th picks; took a washout and A.J. Pollock with them. They had Trout highly regarded, but hesitated because he was a northern kid...(Kiriloff actually has a few things in common with Trout...) Anyway, drafting is like hitting. The Twins' BABIP will normalize almost in spite of anything the front office does or doesn't do.
  21. Thanks for sharing this tidbit. Not knowing anything about Lewis, and only a little about Kiriloff, I can only assume this indicates a high level of personal bias on the part of the ranker. He liked Lewis a lot before the draft, ranked him higher right after, and essentially used Kiriloff's injury against him to not rank him. Not saying it will happen, but Kiriloff and Javier, to name just two examples (maybe the only two!) could well be top 20 prospects in a year and a half. What then? Do we jump in a time machine and erase the angst we are feeling right now because they aren't showing up at all? This whole ranking deal is just a series of still frames in a moving picture--"movie" as they call them for short. This particular still doesn't happen to show a whole lot.
  22. Not to restate the obvious. O.K. I'll do it anyway. Three homeruns for Davis, two of the go ahead variety. What exactly do they have in Turley? A rare find, or just an old guy dominating the kids? I saw the box scores last night, and was worried Meija got hurt. Didn't think about keeping him fresh for Saturday.
  23. "Positive" reporting from the national media. Either it's happening, or this is the kiss of death.
  24. This is a great article. There should be 14 pages of comments. This and other things I've read make me feel like Allen might have been gritting his teeth in frustration about the way the org went about coaching pitchers, and makes me understand better why he was retained.
