  1. The prescription sounds good, but I think if the Twins go in believing the only way to beat the Yankees is by scoring early and hanging on by their fingernails, they are doomed. They have to believe they can win at anytime in the game. Chapman isn't Rivera. These Yankees are like the Lonesome Dove sequel with no Robert Duvall or Tommy Lee Jones.
  2. Fun to see the season pitch totals. Not sure what to take away from it, other than Santiago sure threw a lot of pitches for as little as he seemed to be around.
  3. Overlay the season long win expectancy graph onto this one game. About the sixth inning, the Yankees will have a lead, with their fearsome bullpen cued up. Odds of winning the game will be about the same as the playoff odds on July 31st. Falvey will trade Belisle away mid-game, for a ballboy, or maybe a fancy usher. Brian Dozier gets angry and hits a three run homer. Judge strikes out to end it. I'm pretty sure about that last part.
  4. Busenitz and Hildenberger, Esqs. Lose the Case of the Hungover Hung-One-Over.
  5. Thanks for the perspective. While it might not have been planned, it seems as though the sell-off was well-timed to coincide with the young players ready to rise to the challenge, versus crumble like they had in the past. And, as Nick points out, it netted assets to boot. Part of the BeeGee's savviness is displayed by the fact they were smart enough to walk into a good situation. Another part in that they didn't go overboard in tearing down what was already there, i.e. sell Dozier or Santana for Deleons-on-the-dollar. To take that further, the subtle, unsexy tweaks of adding veteran leadership and progressive coaches follows the same line. They could have gone all Preller on the situation, but their patience has paid off. As much as I might have supported Ryan, I'm not convinced the Twins would be where they are with him at the helm. We'll never know, at least in this part of the multi-verse. I guess, though, that the Twins performance without any major player acquisitions will just bolster those who might say "just think where they could be if GM X or I were in charge."
  6. Colon seems like he would be a poor choice, but maybe it is a deal where he comes up with a crafty game plan and keeps a team off balance for 4-5 innings. If he's matched up against a number 4 starter, it's just might work. Worrying about playoff rotations is such a first world problem.
  7. This just builds the suspense for that WC game. Love it. Sano ("damp," "Sami," and "sanity" according to autocorrect's preference) makes his comeback and smacks a homer, while Judge ends the game with a strikeout. High drama. Can't wait. Every time I've thought "oh this is it, the dream is over," they get back up off the mat.
  8. Nice to see Curtiss and Moya pitch in a game that was still winnable. Both held the line, it looks like.
  9. Should have pinch ran Granite, get the steal. (There's your sac bunt). Glad to see the young bullpen not wilt under the pressure. Best part of the game.
  10. Our "Ace" is on the mound today, and then we're facing disgruntled former employee Jaime Garcia, who likely has a vendetta against this classless organization. Then it's Colon versus Sabbathia? Holy cow, I'm leaving that one alone, although I think it would be classy if Colon had saved one of those XXL t-shirts for CC.
  11. Seems like the last two games have shown how a good team picks each other up. Busenitz bailed out (I forgot) and the Hildenberger covers for Busenitz and the Rosario picks them all up. This time it ended with Buxton picking up old man Zbelidle. (I'll just leave that mistyping.)
  12. I think I might have coined the Magnificent Seven idea. No matter, but if you make the comparison with the movies, the magnificent seven has two main studs (Brynner/McQueen, Denzel/Pratt, Buxton/Sano) and then five more guys of diminishing star quality. I think our movie is still in the Act I phase, the "assembling the gang" montage. I'd say spot 7 is still up for grabs. Currently auditioning: Meija Hildenberger Vargas Adrianza Busenitz I think in the both the original and the remake, the seventh guy was kind of a chubby guy, so Meija and Vargas make the most sense, but performance will dictate.
  13. Maybe Molitor had the big picture in mind. Knew he had to somehow NOT use Hildy and Belly. Maybe he even factored the score of the Angels game into the equation. If this team had a bullpen full of elite pitchers, this team would have a better record. Molitor is rolling with the hand he's been dealt. Hopefully Duffy and Presley at least have a few good games left to help average out the sucky ones. No comment on the bunting though. He does know the ball is juiced, right?
  14. Thanks on the box score fix. Obviously I hadn't had enough coffee this morning when I first looked at this.
  15. *for the season. Badoo's line was not eye-popping for this game, although he contributed nonetheless.
  16. Seven out save...how about a 21 out start? Impressive anyway. It's fun to see "eye-popping" numbers (though not funnto think too deeply about that metaphor) from prospects. Moran and Badoo both had them.
  17. Definitely nice to see Diaz play well. Minier released; Lewin rising to the occasion. So it goes. It felt like this was kind of a "bridge" year for the farm system. Or maybe that was last year, and now they are on the other side, with a few more high upside prospects than they seemed to have at the beginning.
  18. As always, love these lists. I see these names in the box scores and TD reports and don't always put stuff together, especially when the player is very young or not a top prospect. This sort of thing is helpful and informative. Glad to see Thorpe with a decent month. Sad to not see Romero or Gonsalves anywhere on the list. So it goes, though.
  19. I'd say the relievers that didn't pitch last night, sans Turley, are the first four pitchers on the most trusted list right now. As you say, Tom, losses like this seemed much more frequent earlier in the season. And last year.
  20. Okay. Had I read Souhan's comment about Perkins as a comment in a thread here at TD, I might have liked it, admiring the witty snarkiness. Or dialogued a bit with the author, to suss out more meaning. As it is, as a non-Minnesotan who only reads his stuff if it is linked here, I find it as a poor example of journalism. He seems to me less like a journalist, and more like a blog commenter (not writer) who gets paid to have strong opinions; opinions that we are supposed to give extra credence to due to his "access." Reminds me of a popular off-season thread that went 1500 comments, fueled in part (large part?) by the OP's supposed "access" to inside sources. As it is, concern over Sano's weight, or that of any other overweight person, in America should not be considered insightful or inflammatory or, for that matter, uncommon. I am blessed with a metabolism that allows me to eat whatever I want without my body providing visual evidence of my health habits. Maybe if (insert skinny player name)was taking better care of his body by eating more carrots or laying off the coffee he'd be able to see the ball/have less shaky bat control and be able to get a hit.
  21. The only thing I learned from that column was something about "Glen Perkin's unannounced early retirement." What?
  22. Yeah, I wonder where he's been too. No minor league recap post to ask in...
  23. This team has character oozing out its pores right now, and Colon adds to and enhances it. I'm not worried about next year, and neither should he at this point. Enjoy this ride and reevaluate in the offseason.
  24. Great read. I like the metaphysical implications of all this re: Lewis' arrival being a catalyst or simply a synchronous event in a pattern of positivity.
