Article: Twins Sign RHP Michael Pineda
Han Joelo replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I saw the Smyly move and thought "this is the type of move the Twins just don't have the dollars to make--only the biggest spenders do this." Wrong. Nice move for only $2 million on this year's payroll. -
Article: Winter Meetings - Search For A Starter
Han Joelo replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I've seen plenty of outlandish trade proposals by fans, but I think many of the astute posters at TD sometimes undervalue the Twins--almost an overreaction to the "Duensing for Kersharw" type trades.. If the Pirates are looking for a CF, SS, and RP, all three of those guys could contribute, probably right out of the gate. That isn't a bad trade for them at all.- 169 replies

Article: Thank You Moderators!
Han Joelo replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
once, I started to open up a can of worms, but then I thought about the Twinsdaily Moderators, and I asked myself, "what are you doing?" so I stopped. Thanks! -
Wow, the last two years have seen an incredible infusion/development of talent. Lots of big droppers, but not really because they've changed inasmuch as the competition has gotten tougher. For example-Blankenhorn. Obviously, he didn't make a performance leap like a Badoo did, but he still played well and would seemingly have the same potential that he had a year ago when he was 7th. Chargois going from 9 to 45 seems like it partially reflects a bit of change on the evaluators part. It being the hopeful Christmas season, I look at the pitchers on here that are close to ready, and then at the line (and money) a guy like Chatwood sports, and I have a hard time hoping for much FA activity. Pay your stars, develop reinforcements, and fill-in on the fringes. And sign an ace!

Article: Twins Strike Out On Ohtani
Han Joelo replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
This is the second time this year the Twins missed out/passed on a two-way phenom, 3 if you count McKay. I had gotten myself excited about the possibility, but now that it has passed, I find myself agreeing with those that are glad to avoid the dog and pony show.- 68 replies

Han Joelo replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Sour grapes aside, if I was him, Seattle, San Diego, and San Francisco would be no-brainers. For a guy who lives on an island, being near the ocean would probably be a plus. And fresh fish. I don't know about Minnesota, but the difference in sushi between Seattle and Michigan is astronomically huge.- 68 replies

Article: Twins Strike Out On Ohtani
Han Joelo replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Japan to MSP: 11 hours 43 minutes Japan to SFO: 10 hours 10 minutes Japan to Dallas: 12 hours 42 minutes Japan to Seattle: 9 hours 27 minutes All times courtesy of: https://www.flight-durations.com For another look, check out this website: https://www.greatcirclemapper.net/en/great-circle-mapper.html?route=RJAA-KMSP&aircraft=66&speed=. You can customize plane size; I chose an Airbus 320. Faster than what the first website quotes. Great Circle flight paths are neat to think about, unless you believe the Earth is flat. I remember flying from Seattle to Amsterdam and looking down at the far north of Canada. That was a surprisingly short flight. What would he make, 2-3 flights per year? The difference is around a half a day of your life, sitting on a plane. Small potatoes. Maybe this guy isn't the guy I thought he was. All the plotting and planning, his pick of all 30 teams, and he limits himself because of sitting in an airplane for an hour or two?- 68 replies

I honestly hit the back button to make sure I was still on the right thread...I love talking/reading about prospects, hope for the future, etc. How did this thread turn into a reductive (and ridiculous) look into the rear view mirror? Oh wait...

Another kajillion Twins Daily poster/mod/owner-operator who comes up with an easy way for people to post statistics. I appreciate when people use them to support arguments, and I've learned much over the years about statistical analysis from many of you fine folks. However, and not picking on scottz, just using this as a common example--I can't read those numbers and get any meaning out of it without smoke coming out my ears. Looks like code to me. Get on that in your spare time, fellas.

Thanks Seth! Great way to start the morning--coffee and prospects. I don't have any quibbles, but I usually see things in blocks anyway, so I don't personally get too worried about whether I might think Romero is a slightly better prospect than Gonsalves, or vice versa. I DO get why people care, and why it is fun to try and figure out/predict which one will be slightly better. So far, the Lewis pick is a major plus on the new regimes resume. Not that the other choices have already turned out bad, but at least to outsiders, taking Lewis seemed like a risk. After what we saw, compared to the other options, Lewis actually seems like the safest choice of the five. I don't know what it is with Gordon--I really like him, but he has always been such a vanilla prospect. Nothing wows you unless you consider how likely he is to have a long, productive career. The weird thing is, I remember being a pre/early teen and getting into baseball card collecting, and his Dad was part of that first "Rated Rookie" class of Donruss cards, and he WAS an exciting prospect. This team is so close to contention, and it has been so long since the Twins have developed a decent starting pitcher, that I think I have downgraded Romero and Gonsalve's potential to help this year. But, I'd rather watch them pitch then watch an expensive but mediocre veteran free agent. I.e., if they are going to be blocked, it had better be by somebody great, not Ricky Nolasco or Phil Hughes. Kirilloff was covered yesterday in comments, but his placement here seems right--for now. He's got a lot to live up to this year, but he seems to have the makeup and tools. It would be fun to see him, Badoo, and Lewis at CR all together next season. That might make for a fun summer for you midwesterners. In fact, we plan on driving to Michigan this time for our annual in-law visit next summer, so instead of making my yearly visit to the MSP airport, I might "arrange" our drive for a night in Cedar Rapids. "Oh, look Honey, there is a minor league baseball game tonight. We should take the boys." I plan on seeing Mt. Rushmore on that trip (never been)--who would be the fourth Kernal for the Mt. Rushmore of Twins 2018 prospects? Javier, I guess. Wow. What a team that could be.

This is the hottest hot stove topic since the infamous Dozier to La threads of early '17. It deserves at least double digit pages. Come on, folks, let's stoke this baby up. Why he won't go to: NY. I had a chance to spend a month in China once, while my wife did an acupuncture internship. Originally, she was supposed to go to a city nearer the Himalayas, and I was all over that. However, a devastating earthquake decimated the city, and she had to switch to Shanghai. I had no desire to go to that mass of humanity. I wanted mountains. Ohteni is hopefully like me, except maybe he likes lakes instead. LA: https://goo.gl/images/tx15eh Even if the gif doesn't work, suffice it to say it is an image of traffic on the 405. Texas: If you cut Alaska in half, Texas would be the third largest state. If you flattened Idaho, it would be bigger than Texas. Long story short: Texas is overrated. If states had personalities, Texas would be the opposite of Ohtani. Seattle: If it was me, all things being equal, I'd choose Seattle. But they aren't equal. They are a mishmash of old and young; with more than one of the old guys blocking the DH spot. Seeing how Seattle wasted the prime of KGjr, Ichiro, and King Felix, there isn't a great precedent. Pass. Boston: They don't have a chance. Therefore, he probably goes there. Giants: Probably not a bad fit. He might even get to play the field for that woeful offense. The stars have aligned for the Twins. This is Flavine's chance for a jaw-dropping, signature writing, mic-busting move. It shall come to pass.

In terms of "alikeness" Kiriloff fits right in with this group. Young, high ceilings. Thorpe too. And a dose of uncertainty. This will be an exciting season to follow the minor leagues.

Have the Yankees hired a manager yet? Seems like knowing who your manager will be might be important. I'm in full conspiracy mode. I.e, when Falvey was hiring GM candidates, Levine laid his cards (resume) on the table, and then...dropped a Darvish baseball card on top of it all. And then, very dramatically, dropped an Ohtani card on TOP of the Darvish card. This has been preordained. Of course, then you have to wonder about the whole Marte thing, and how underhanded it would have been to void that contract over some technicality, like he tested at 20/19 vision instead of 20/18 or something. Yuck. Why follow in Tanaka/Matsui's footsteps in NY, when you can pave your own way in MN? I'm overly optimistic about this.

Article: Twins With Options On The Trade Front
Han Joelo replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Nice write-up. I think I'd give Kirilloff another year before considering trading him. Seems like a sell-low deal right now. You're right, though. Have to give to get. Whether it was Ramos or Hu or Billy Bullock, it was always too much for some.- 78 replies

I was thinking/hoping the same thing as I read through this. You don't know with some guys, and without the eye-popping velocity, or being left-handed, some guys have ceilings as prospects. Both Littell and Wade strike me as guys who will have good MLB careers. If I was buying stock in these guys, I'd feel good and safe about both of them. Garver almost seems like he is underrated, by everybody, including me. Those are some amazing numbers, especially for a catcher. Love Thorpe. When I was a kid, I loved following the Houston Rockets. Anybody remember Otis Thorpe? Absolutely no relation, but he was a good player. Great names. Lewis Thorpe sounds like the name of an Australian gunslinger.

Article: Twins Add Three Players To 40 Man Roster
Han Joelo replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The Yankees traded 2 or 3 guys today/recently. How do they compare to the likes of Reed? Rainy day project for someone. For me, this says a lot about the caliber of prospects some of these guys are, which is to say less than I hoped. Goes a ways towards explaining why a guy like Reed didn't get a look last season. He'll probably get taken, and probably be okay...just not as good as whatever free agent the Twins plan on signing. The Three Chosen Ones were no-brainers for me. Burdi's injury clouds things, and Diaz...just not sure what to make of that one.- 127 replies

Seth, Your list so far seems like there have almost been themes to each grouping. This grouping might be "The Youngish, Not Quite Elitish Infielder Group." The last group was kind of the Questionable and Injured First Round Pitcher group. I like it chunked, and I don't pay much attention to the individual rankings, just the range. This year I feel a big distinction between TOTAL prospects and high floor guys. By that I mean Granite, Jorge, and Curtiss all have made their debut and have shown they aren't going to be washouts, thus a high floor--they are going to contribute, at least as young and cheap players. Curtiss at 16ish is high floor, but still reflects some good hope for upside--he could be a MLB closer. Or just a guy. I still like Jorge as someone who has a long MLB career.

Article: Ranking The Rule 5 Options
Han Joelo replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
As Pertaining to Navaretto, When it comes to judging catcher value, I have no idea what I am talking about, and neither does anybody else. Juan Centeno just won a WS ring. Turner stuck all year. Butera, Murphy have value. I have to surmise there aren't 60 elite MLB caliber catchers in the world, defensively speaking. If Navaretto is "elite" defensively, well...trade him for something.- 59 replies

Article: The Brian Dozier Trade That Almost Was
Han Joelo replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Hypothetical: This WS is closely matched. Forsythe isn't bad, but what if Dozier was in there instead and was the difference for LA? Would it have been worth it to meet the Twins' trade demands? Do the Cubs regret giving up Torres for Chapman and a title? On the other hand, what if they lost anyway... -
Two things stand out--these aren't obscure names. There are some well-known guys in this bunch (well known by me at least.) Also, it is hard to believe how old Chargois and Bard are and still on this list. I know it is because of injury, but still. Seems like an anomaly. I'm much more used to seeing the likes of Arias and Morani here--lower profile international guys who have tools but not the hype. Thanks as always, Seth.

Article: The Brian Dozier Trade That Almost Was
Han Joelo replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I enjoyed watching competitive baseball this year. Dozier was a big part of the success. All things considered, the right move was made. Dervish and Oteni, baby. They weren't coming to a 100 loss team, but now? (Misspelling intentional. I may or may not be talking about who you think I am) -
I thought that towel had a Vikings logo on it. Why is Allen lecturing an offensive lineman, I thought. Anyway... I've seen national stories documenting the "ineptitude" of decisions made by Maddon and Girardi in the last few days. There are so many ways to critique a manager, but ultimately, wins count the most, especially when accompanied by clubhouse endorsements. I'm glad to see Molitor back. Better the devil you know... If they flop next year, he'll probably be gone.

In the end, I guess the game shook out fairly predictably. Kudos to Girardi. Robertson in the third? I hope Buck is proud they changed pitchers on him twice--and not emotionally scarred. I wish we would have had a healthy Sano. I wish Santana would have pitched a shutout. But, I'm grateful for the ride. Go Tribe!
