  1. Picking through what is left at St. Paul, I am curious about Evan Sisk. That he is a lefty has to help his cause. Will he have to be protected from being selected in the Rule V draft? It looks like he walks quite a few, good K numbers. He's 25, so not quite a fuzzy cheeked youngster. Palacios looks like he can at least be a utility player in the majors. His hot streak now gives him very good numbers at triple A and he demonstrated a good glove in his short stay with the Twins. I see he played 3B yesterday and he has had a bit of time in the outfield. I know he'd have to be added to the 40-man to be protected from the Rule V draft in the off season, but he could well be the opening day SS for the Twins in 2023.
  2. Pennant chase: There are three teams in the race for the AL Central and perhaps a wild card. Each was playing a four game series. Right now, the Twins who were home underdogs against Toronto are 2-1. Chicago, which was a road favorite against Texas is 1-2, and Cleveland, which was a home underdog is 1-2. It wouldn't surprise me at all if all three teams come out of this 2-2. It seems that is the way it goes, the Twins aren't running away but Cleveland and Chicago haven't been able to overtake them.
  3. In checking Lòpez' closer history (that is only this year), he hasn't worked three consecutive games all year, so I presume he is out for today, as are Fulmer, Duran and Jax. Sands and Pagán are rested and available and I presume both Thielbar and Megill could get an inning. Not a great scenario, but they did secure at least a split and won the season series vs. the Blue Jays. Pagán has not been good this year and Sands hasn't shown he is ready to be a major league pitcher from his stats, but who do you replace them with? Both Winder and Moran are on the Injured List at triple A and given Toronto's lineup, I wouldn't want the lefty Smeltzer to face them. I have to believe that Smeltzer gets recalled for Sands after today, but that Pagán holds on to a spot because there aren't any better options.
  4. Cave is true tweener, stretched as a center fielder, not enough offense to be a regular corner OF. He reputedly works hard and he plays hard and hustles. Perk and Morneau made some references to having a better approach at the plate and he is healthy. He wasn’t a good fit with many LH corner OFs on the team, but he’s stayed available and now has a chance to stay in the majors. Good on Jake!
  5. Several comments to make: 1) Sandy León looks like an excellent pickup. He appears to live up to his rep as a receiver, has hit a little bit, and was able to get a bunt down to score a key run. 2) Nice to see the Twins add on after taking the lead in the middle innings. 3) Arraez got three hits, perhaps ending a (for him) long snag. 4) Available bullpen options for Sunday would be Sands, Thielbar, Megill and Pagán. Toronto has used their ‘pen a lot too, but they’ll have Gausman starting.
  6. Since May 1, we've had byron buxton. In April and for the 60 games he played last year, the Twins had BYRON BUXTON, the best player in MLB.
  7. If Boras doesn't see a mega-contract out there for Correa, Carlos may well opt in and bet on himself to get that mega-deal after a more successful 2023. The irony is that the worse Correa performs for the balance of the season, the more likely he is to stay with the Twins for the coming season. I really would like him to stay and for the Twins to go for it again in 2023. The pieces should be there.
  8. The irregulars in the outfield have done pretty well so far. It is going to be a tall order to slug with Toronto. The Twins will need contributions from most of the roster this weekend.
  9. I don’t think the Twins burned an option. His time in the majors was as a COVID list replacement IIRC. I think there is a reasonable chance that he’ll be added to the 40-man roster and given a chance to make the 2023 Twins if Correa opts out. In the SSS of both players’ major league time, I liked Palacios’ defense better than Royce Lewis’ defense at short.
  10. I would guess that Varland leads Twins' affiliates in IP. He seems to be on a path to get to MLB sometime next year. Has Woods-Richardson made a start since being injured? Monday is August 1st. I would think that decisions would have to be made about shutting down players--Balazovic, Canterino, Martin.
  11. The month of July is almost over. The Twins are still in first place and the game threads should be hopping in the coming month,. If anyone new would like to try their hand at doing a game thread introduction, you have a chance in August. There are 28 game days in the month and so far about 20 have been spoken for. You, yes you(!), can take your turn at the wheel and set the stage for another exciting and entertaining. game. If you are interested or have questions, send me a message or respond in this thread. Here is the tentative schedule for August: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1RDtza8g3yIsR6qMrieWot9zyTB_HoM6mcfCc3chmMRc/edit
  12. Correa didn’t score because he wasn’t advancing on a ground ball hit in front of him. However, in the same inning, he did not tag when Yelich made the diving catch. It is a moot point because Garlick ran into an out on the same play.
  13. There is only one week until the trade deadline. Not much time for Miggy to turn heads. It would appear this will be his last run with the Twins. Let’s hope he has some big hits left for the stretch run.
  14. Arraez is okay at 3B IMHO and depending on what happens with Urshela (non-tender or trade) and Miranda (trade candidate at the deadline)he might get a lot of time there next year. Having guys who are serviceable at several positions is nice. Finding guys who are good to great fielders at key positions (Correa, Buxton) is even better.
  15. I would say Enlow and Henriquez would still be considered prospects with higher ceilings and would stay on the 40-man in 2023 a la Vallimont. I’m not sure either Contreras or Strotman make it through 2022 on the 40-man roster.
  16. Bad base running combined with slow runners.
  17. So, does Lee fit above Miller in the shortstop pecking order? Actually, to be more precise, can we fans expect Lee making his debut for the Twins before Miller? As a 21-year-old with advanced skills, I would expect he could finish this season at Cedar Rapids, although I have no idea what the Twins are planning.
  18. Lee has agreed to term according to mlbtraderumors.com.
  19. Yes, there are many things to be concerned about, but let's look at the entire picture. The Twins have a winning record at the break and a small lead in the division. This is primarily because they have a good lineup and their pitchers overperformed for the first third of the season. Three position players with less than a years experience have looked promising--Miranda, Kirilloff and Larnach (now out with injury)--and three pitchers with less than a years experience--Winder, Jax and Duran--have done well. Luis Arraez continues to show he is elite as a hitter and Jorge Polanco is giving indications that he'll have a monster second half to his season. Now to the minus side of the ledger. The rotation, which looked suspect coming out of Spring Training looks suspect again after encouraging performances early in the year. Sonny Gray hasn't been the same since coming off the IL the second time. Joe Ryan isn't dominating although he's really held his own and everyone else in the rotation is both limited in upside and an injury risk. The bullpen has been poor and prospects for improvement from within are close to non-existent. While looking at individual performances from the position players, there aren't many, if any, disappointments, the offense hasn't sustained above-average run scoring for more than a series at a time. For the second half (post All-Star break), I believe the Twins will continue to score runs well above average and they will continue to be a decent defensive outfit, barring devastating injuries. If they can find enough pitching, they will be in the hunt for the playoffs and a division crown. If not, they will continue to fade.
  20. How about Mantiply from Arizona? IMHO, almost all sellers at the deadline are looking for prospects, not utility players on big league rosters.
  21. 1961–midsummer Twins vs. Red Sox. Although neither team was that good in 1961, there were a lot of outstanding players on the field. Carl Yastrzemski had recently replaced Ted Williams as the franchise icon and left fielder. Pete Runnels was on his way to winning a batting championship. The Twins had Harmon, Allison, Versalles and Battey along with a young Jim Kaat, Camilo Pascual and Jack Kralick. I recall the Twins winning comfortably and that the grass was so green.
  22. I’m sure it would have to be medically verified.
  23. Sanó’s rehab is over on 7/24 at the latest. At that point, he’s either activated or designated for assignment unless he voluntarily would accept an option (very unlikely).
