  1. It appears that Coulombe is the only NRI remaining among the pitchers. If they consider Ober only as a starter, then it would be between Coulombe and Sands for the last spot in the bullpen.
  2. Onetime Twin Taylor Motter is going to open with the Cardinals.
  3. Thank you guys, I am super optimistic about Larnach and Miranda added to the "trusted guys" you were talking about.
  4. Cole Sands looks like he’s the last man standing. Not a huge fan, but he can provide multiple innings and can be optioned. Also, if Sands is the long man, they still will have one 40-man space available to add either Garlick or Castro.
  5. What a great interview. Matt was candid about his time with the Twins and in MLB and shared a lot of behind-the-scenes stories. He's the kind of guy, successful but not a superstar, who is so interesting to listen to.
  6. In an era where 95 mph is an average fastball, Sano just doesn't have the bat-to-ball skills to be an exceptional hitter. Great power, but just not able to make contact with enough pitches He worked hard and as @chpettit19 points out, the club worked with him, it just doesn't make him a good enough hitter for anyone to want to sign him. With his defensive deficiencies, he needs to be more than okay as a hitter and I don't think he is at this point in his life.
  7. His numbers at St. Paul weren't very good, but his (about) half season with the Twins was pretty good. He's got to reduce the walks some.
  8. Kyle Garlick has hit .130 so far this year in ST. Castro has performed well. If they take a non-roster position player, I think Castro has made a case.
  9. I like Oliver Ortega's chances of helping the club at some point this year. Like Willi Castro, Ortega would have an option to use so that he could go to St. Paul without the risk of being claimed.
  10. The way I read the article in mlbtraderumors.com was that players with a certain amount of service time who finished the previous season in the majors, but then signed minor league contracts are guaranteed an opt-out. Sanchez meets those criteria. It's been reported that Hoffman has opt-outs and several others might as well.
  11. One correction Jeremy. If Willi Castro is added to the roster, he has an option remaining, so he can be sent to St. Paul without being exposed.
  12. I am a pretty big believer in Larnach and Kirilloff.
  13. For a full-time position, sure Julien is the answer if the SSS is to be believed (I'm about 75% convinced). As the last guy on the squad, his versatility plays pretty well.
  14. I hope it's not solely Farmer, but that would mean Castro makes the team. The downside is that Larnach should be playing against right handers and there's not really a place for him.
  15. Miranda played first in a minor league game and last night he played first against Boston. Pretty certain he's available to play there. However, he hasn't played an inning of third this spring. Just like with Polanco and Kirilloff, time is running short (or running out) for Miranda to play third. He does have plenty of experience at third, though.
  16. There's a wall between pitchers and position players. Whether Ober makes the team or not, there will be 13 pitchers and 13 position players on the active roster a week from today in Kansas City. 40-man moves might have to be made. The Twins currently have one vacancy on the 40-man. If Pagan and Cole Sands are the choices to fill out the pitching staff, they could use that vacancy to select either Castro or Garlick. However, if they decide to bring up a non-roster pitcher (most often thought to be Hoffman), then they will have to make a 40-man move to add a position player, probably placing Henriqez (or perhaps Celestino) on the 60-day IL.
  17. Usually when a pitcher returns from TJ surgery, they get most or all of their velocity back and Maeda is close to that, but what lags is the command. If Kenta is not putting the ball close to exactly where he wants, his stuff becomes very hittable. That seems to be the case so far. He looks like the fifth starter on this squad and I don't think his leash will be very long. I wouldn't want to make too many final judgments based on spring training results, however.
  18. With the announcement that Polanco and Kirilloff will not be available on Opening Day, there still are several players who are limited or not playing, with a week until the opener in Kansas City. 1) Miranda has only played first base, due to a sore shoulder. 2) Duran took a comebacker off his leg. It was diagnosed as a contusion. 3) Kepler had a tight hip. He originally was in last night's starting lineup, but was scratched. 4) Ronnie Henriquez has tightness just above the elbow and hasn't thrown in a month. 5) Josh Winder has shoulder impingement and hasn't participated in a game. He has been throwing live batting practice. It is nearly certain that Henriquez will go on the Injured List, perhaps even the 60-day IL. Winder may join him or he might be optioned to St. Paul. Gilberto Celestino will be placed on one of the injured lists as well. I believe Kepler and Duran will be playing in a game before this week is over. Miranda is the tricky one. If he is limited to first base, with Buxton serving only as a DH, it doesn't leave a clear place for Trevor Larnach to play. It would also mean that someone regarded as a bench player against right handed pitching (Castro, Farmer, Solano) would be playing third base.
  19. Having veteran guys to serve as the last two guys on the bench is the right move IMHO. The Twins will go through a lot of players and if probably guys who are now prospects will get chances later. The last two guys in the bullpen and the last two position players aren’t going to stay the same all year.
  20. They will make a space if they have to--I think the space will be provided by Henriquez--and Hoffman does have the inside track with his opt-out.
  21. This highlights factors outside performance on the field. Coulombe isn't on the roster and has no options. Ortega isn't on the 40-man, but would have an option if he got on the roster. Hoffman isn't on the roster and doesn't have options, but has opt-outs. Both Castro and Garlick aren't on the 40-man, but Castro can be optioned. I concur with DocBauer, the choices should be Hoffman and Castro. It also figures Castro becomes more useful if Miranda can't play third base.
  22. I think there are a couple more pitchers with a chance. Danny Coulombe and Oliver Ortiz have a case. I think one of Garlick or Castro will make it. Castro has an option that can be used if the team gets Polanco and Kirilloff (presumed IL) back soon.
  23. Eight days for Pagan to pitch his way off the Opening Day roster. I'd much prefer to take a chance on a non-roster invitee.
  24. Really versatile and a switch hitter without obvious platoon splits. He's a below-average hitter, but he can help the team in a lot of ways, including being a threat on the bases. I think the continued throwing problems for Miranda might improve Willi's chances. On top of all that, Willi is probably every bit as good an outfielder as Gordon, with ample experience in right field (Nick has only played a few innings there).
