  1. Maybe platoon first baseman? Keep him in the lineup often, but not regularly at third and have him at first against left handers. Also, he could fill in if Buxton takes a day off.
  2. The finale will now be a big game for both teams. Playing .500 on the road against the two teams projected to be in the race for the Central would be satisfactory. Continuing Cleveland's streak of losing series would also be good for the Twins. There are lots of guys who are struggling--Vazquez, Gallo, Correa, Miranda, and Solano to name a few. There's enough talent to be a better than a middle-of-the-road offense. They can't rely so much on the home run ball and they need to put better fielders in the game.
  3. Bad defense and uncharacteristic lack of command by Gray. A bad pitch to Kwan by Alcalá. The club needs to score more ways than hitting homers. Hopefully Kirilloff and Farmer will help in that regard. Going into thee game the Twins had three more hits than their opponents through the year, but had outscored them by 29 runs. Some of that is home run disparity (+17) and walk disparity (+16).
  4. Seems unbelievable to me, and I’m a pretty big Willi Castro guy.
  5. If you believe in BWar, Willi has the highest WAR of any position player not named Buxton.
  6. Depending on who gets injured next among position players, Willi might not spend long in St. Paul if, in fact, he is sent down. My best guess is Miranda to the IL, followed by a brief rehab.
  7. I’ll put this in Fun with Numbers. Ten Minnesota Twins on the 40-man roster were born in one year (1997). No other year is close. Here they are from oldest to youngest (birthdays included): Larnach (2/26), Castro and Moran (both 4/24), Jeffers (6/3), Sands (7/17), Kirilloff (11/9), Varland (12/9), Wallner (12/12), Canterino (12/14) and Headrick (12/17).
  8. Another rehabbing note: Farmer was 3-5 with two doubles in yesterday’s Saints game (suspended and completed today). It looks like he’ll be good to go on Monday. Castro, Solano or Miranda might be developing injuries as I post this /s/.
  9. Really, in the end, it's about scoring runs. The Twins stand at 12th in MLB in scoring runs, despite the numbers cited above. The team is dangerously close to becoming totally one-dimensional--they are scoring a high percentage of their runs on homers. They have homered in 17 straight games and their record in those games is................9-8. When they long balls don't come, I really don't like their chances.
  10. The 60-day IL stints for Lewis and Celestino can end on May 29th or thereabouts. With the full 20-day rehab, Celestino and Lewis can play in games in St. Paul (or wherever) starting around May 9. I would expect that Celestino, for sure, begins his rehab in St. Paul as soon as he's eligible. I'm not sure if Lewis will be ready for games in the minors right away, but I know he's been playing several innings in Fort Myers.
  11. Alcala for Winder. It looks like Josh got an extra day due to the shifting that went on with Thielbar (to bring up Kirilloff). Also, I note that Alcala had 3.014 years of service time going into the season. He was optioned for 15 days, so I'm guessing he now would finish the season at 3.179 if the fifteen days are subtracted from his service time. I know an option doesn't count until the player is in the minors for 21 days, do the service days count for a short demotion when the option eventually isn't used?
  12. The long view is that Gallo and probably Kepler will be free agents in 2024. The Twins will have Larnach, Kirilloff and Wallner as candidates for two or three positions--all LH hitters and none a center fielder. Injuries will happen and I doubt Larnach, in particular, or Wallner will spend the rest of '23 in St. Paul. All three of these guys were born in the same year. It is getting late for any of them to be a prospect and they need to be relied on to perform.
  13. I think keeping Castro has a lot to do with Miranda and his struggles. They ran for Miranda (with Castro) last night in the seventh inning after Miranda made a suspect throw to first in an earlier inning. It was a two-hopper from deep third, but not close to the line. Also, Miranda isn't hitting right now and really looks lost at the plate. When Farmer returns, he will be Option A to back up Miranda and might get a lot of at-bats as a third baseman.
  14. I'm having a hard time with the sequence of events for the transactions yesterday. It was known that Dereck Rodriguez was being recalled with his contract purchased in the afternoon. Meanwhile a lineup was posted with Trevor Larnach starting in left field and hitting eighth. Eventually the transactions were Kirilloff recalled for Caleb Thielbar and Rodriguez recalled for Larnach. That couldn't have been the original transaction. I suppose Rodriguez was originally slated to come up for one of the optionable relief pitchers (Moran or Winder), but then took Thielbar's place when Thielbar couldn't go either Thursday or Friday. The injury to Thielbar also opened the door to bring Kirilloff up earlier, since he could technically replace a player going on the IL (again Thielbar). Larnach is the roster casualty. He has 124 plate appearance and a .686 OPS, yielding a below-average OPS+ and a negative WAR. I still think Larnach can be a staple in a good lineup, but the strikeouts are high and the power is not.
  15. JLopez and Duran have worked two days in a row. I suppose they'll be unavailable tomorrow night. Everybody else should be available.
  16. Kirilloff recalled today and probably won't play until Sunday unless he pinch hits. They face a lefty tomorrow.
  17. I presume Rodríguez is the long man and Winder moves to a multi-inning relief role? Caleb Thielbar going on the IL is a surprise. I hope he recovers quickly.
  18. A lot to chew on here. Let’s hope Larnach bangs the door down in St. Paul. I hope Thielbar is not seriously injured and Mahle???? Rodriquez is a long man, Winder multi-innings. Note to mods— can we comment on this thread or should we start a new one to comment? If the latter is true, feel free to hide or delete this.
  19. They can't gain a 40-man spot by putting Canterino on the 60-day list. I posted something about this earlier.
  20. The Twins haven't faced many lefties at all. Jeffers does have good splits against left handers so starting him often against lefties makes sense. Jeffers has made a few bad plays, including the "wild pitch" charged to Stewart, but he's been a better offensive player than Vazquez. His throwing looks improved overall, but it's probably too soon to make a judgment.
  21. There's a thread about this. Yes, the Twins have been beyond awful with the bases loaded, but they've been more than respectable with runners in scoring position and have hit the second most three-run homers. One stat doesn't tell the whole story.
  22. There are a lot of players in the same boat as Miranda. AJ Melendez for the Royals looks like a tremendous prospect to me, but he's slumping and fanning much like Miranda. I'm sure there are others. If the Twins can afford to send Miranda down, they probably should do it, but a couple of hits can restore the confidence and change things in a hurry as well.
  23. It shouldn't come as a surprise that Hanser Alberto swung at a pitch that hit him. He is Astudillo-like without contact skills. It absolutely was a key play in winning the game. Stewart pitched well and bailed out Jeffers after he failed to catch/block a low pitch. Pagan got outs and Jorge Lopez had a nice comeback outing.
