    I believe it was the Yankees who made an offer to the Twins for Santana, but the Twins sat on it. When Terry Ryan came back later and said OK, the Yankees withdrew the offer and made a worse offer, one that the Twins could not accept. Ryan wanted to wait until the last second before the deadline to make the deal, the Yankees did not. The Twins were also hoping for something better from the Mets, but didn't get it. And the thing with trading Santana to the Mets -- the Mets were not a good team. The Twins were just not going to get much out of that, and they didn't. The Mets didn't get much out of it either, at least if you're looking at season records. Honestly, I'm not sure what the Mets were thinking. The Twins were stuck on the "Until the we have a new stadium, we can't afford Santana" schtick, and broadcasting this to everybody did not help. Santana also went to the media during this time and expressed his frustration with the team's morbid fear of spending money.

    People who are barely functional enough to get onto the internet have been proven to be disastrous for just about everything once they managed to get on.

    Depends. If I was already on pace for 100 wins and just want to get the ring, I'd go with Scherzer for sure. If I want to solidify my rotation for the year and upgrade the back of my rotation for a couple of years, Berrios is a nice option.

    Which WAR are you using? bWAR -> 2.5 for Scherzer, 1.8 for Berrios. With fWAR's reliance on xFIP, I would be surprised if fWAR is not showing an even bigger difference. (Although anything is possible -- there's a reason fangraphs is not my first stop for info.)

    To be fair, it's easier to sit in the batter's box and swing. Who the heck wants to chase down balls and have to run quickly around the bases? Ugh. That's for the birds. Swing for the fences and pray! The nachos in the dugout are getting cold, after all.

    He isn't? His 2021 year so far is 135 ERA+, 3.47 FIP, 12.2 K/9. This is still #1 starter performance. Berrios has never hit any of those numbers in his entire career.

    When Scherzer was drafted, I added him to my keeper league immediately based on scouting reports. Everyone thought I was crazy for doing that, but I was convinced he was a future HOFer. My team stunk that year, for sure, but I knew good things were coming since I had him locked up. In the long run, I was not disappointed. I'm betting you won't find many stories like this about Berrios. I don't think it's fair to argue that Berrios is anywhere near Scherzer, who will be in the HOF. Berrios is fine, as is the Toyota Corolla, but a Corolla is a different experience than a Learjet.

    If Scherzer is on the table, Berrios barely even qualifies as a consolation prize. Berrios should feel good about this, it's the only time in his career their names will be used in the same sentence by so many people. It's the Learjet v. the Toyota Corolla.

    Although onlookers are no doubt enjoying this Laurel and Hardy routine, I'm thinking continuing down this track may derail the conversation. Sleep on it, or something, and it may come to you.

    To be clear, I don't think they should trade Berrios at all. But I think if you look at the line I specifically quoted, and then the image, you may see the point I made.

    Ah, humidity. Fun times. This is when you put in the groundball pitchers. Do the Twins even have any of those? Meh, nevermind.

    We will see what happens, but I agree: the longer this team waits, the less of a return they will get. Even Terry Ryan could dump off expiring contracts for prospects. After seeing the foolish tactics used around extending Buxton, I'm wondering how the team is negotiating with other teams.

    I think the Twins were hoping on him being a lottery ticket. And to be fair, Robles has not been awful all year. With all the other things I have seen this year with pitching decisions, I could buy it that Robles was put out there in situations that are less than ideal for his skillset, and perhaps kept out there longer than he needed to be. It seems like every reliever has been slotted in every role and situation possible this year, with no rhyme or reason to it. The Dodgers were able to mask his problems, for a while, by using him smartly. For xFIP, I don't think xFIP alone is a good predictor of future performance. But if xFIP, FIP, BABIP, and SIERA are telling a story, it's wise to listen. All of those metrics together paint Robles as a pretty mediocre pitcher and suggest he always has been. Pitchers like Robles can have a role on a major league team, but it has to be very situational and dependent upon the matchup. The current Twins manager does not think that way, or at least it does not seem like he does.

    Some people around here, and I was not one of them, were able to see Robles as a smoke and mirrors guy all season.

    Kudos to Taylor Rogers for giving the Twins 'The Finger' when his name started to hit the trade rumor pile.

    Best hope is he goes to an NL team. He will be another player who lights up the Twins whenever he plays them. Except with him, when he's playing for revenge, he's good enough to hit for the cycle every other time while stealing home runs over the wall. It won't just be dingers like with Papi.

    A lot of journalists are talking about all the Twins player's "final games" yet there are no indications anywhere that the Twins are trying to move anybody except Berrios, Buxton, and Taylor -- i.e., the three people they should try to keep. There isn't much time left, as well. If the Twins are really gonna sell off half the team this week, they'd better start getting out of bed before noon.

    Yet another snafu from the manager. If anyone still thinks managerial intragame decisions have no effect on games, well...

    I hope people are wrong about the Twins trading off Berrios and Rogers for prospects. This would begin another long, annoying rebuild. The Twins have an ample amount of 1-year rentals that they have yet to move. I don't buy it that no one wants any of them. Also, why is the team still betting on Sano?

    I think you know that I am one of the most skeptical people around, but I think it is worth paying Buxton near his peak market value. The Twins were 62-25 with Buxton in 2019, and 39-36 without him. That's insane. There is every possibility that the 2019 team, record home runs and all, gets ten to twelve fewer wins without Buxton. Record home runs -> 90 wins? Wow, that's a flawed team (but also another discussion). The idea with WAR, and this is what most people believe, is that players only affect a handful of wins every year. I truly believe that Buxton is a WARbuster, and this is primarily due to his defense. When he can hit too, which yes isn't always, what he will do during those weeks on the field are unmatchable. Buxton can provide an incredible amount of value in that half season he is on the field. More than what nearly every other player can provide given the whole year. If a team is a mere 5-6 games from sheer dominance, that team should grab Buxton and pay him fairly. He will help them accomplish their goals. Teams further back, teams that need more, should not grab Buxton. Now of course it's a fair point that long-term contracts are risky. I hate long term contracts for all players, really, so that seems pretty normal.

    No one in baseball could have paid that contract at that time, and no one else would have offered him that contract. This is why the Rangers had to eat half of it after trading him off, and it's also why they had to trade him off. Even the Yankees, notorious spenders, could not afford that contract at that time. To top it all off, this was the steroid era and he was later caught. Worth it? I don't know. By today's standards, sure. By the standards of the time, it was a massive overpay and it had most people shaking their heads. I don't recall if the Rangers declared bankruptcy later or if they narrowly avoided it.
