  1. Second wild and crazy guy prediction: Trevor May is the winning pitcher in this game.
  2. Well that finally explains where Boo-boo comes from.
  3. This thread is one of the best arguments I've seen that people absolutely must learn a second language. Oh, and bring Max Kepler up when his team's playoffs are over, and Berrios next year.
  4. Speaking for nobody but myself, my foremost action is to adopt Bronowski's Principle of Tolerance. http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S030698770700504X And I call 'em as I see 'em.
  5. Ok, a different take on things Russian. And the best athlete you'll see tonight.
  6. This is why I love brilliant artists. In this case, Leonard Berstein. http://www.brainpickings.org/2014/11/25/leonard-bernstein-jfk-speech/
  7. I'll be the wild and crazy one and predict Buxton gets his first HR in this series. It does not necessarily leave the park.
  8. Asimov was an interesting dichotomy for me; I devour his non-fiction but, excepting The Foundation series, found his fiction to be too, stiff is the term I'd use. Whereas Heinlein could really rock a novel.
  9. Leinie's Sunset Wheat going down well tonight.
  10. I block PM's from lots of people. Try again now.
  11. I've been thinking about this part a bit. While there are some very terrible truths there, I also have to bring up the contributions to music, architecture, painting, sculpture, literature, poetry, and some branches of philosophy. And recall the Muslim scholars who kept mathematics and astronomy alive during the European Dark Ages. So while never forgetting the bad, it's also worth it to acknowledge the good, don't you think?
  12. "The Twins need to go up to the plate with a plan against the Rays starting pitching." http://goo.gl/kyf5I
  13. Definition of sunk cost? The RMS Titanic.
  14. Pretty much entirely switching to e-book format for anything new as a good chunk of my existing 5000 volumes are packed away in boxes. After enjoying Alistair Maclean and Michael Crichton, I had trouble reading the likes of Clancy.
  15. Why drink vodka when you can get Jameson? Life's too short (and getting shorter every day).
  16. You may find useful information in the archives at JREF. http://web.randi.org/about.html
  17. Executive summary: Berrios and Kepler don't suck.
  18. http://youtu.be/jD21cb_Wyk8
  19. I'm just finishing up Andy Weir's The Martian, which is also going to be a big screen release in October. Definitely hard science Sci-Fi. Otherwise plowing through non-fiction, including the volumes of Twain's autobiography. What do you all like, and recommend?
  20. Ok, I wouldn't normally go to a sports bar to talk books, since they're too damn loud. But since the subject was disparaged in the Announcers not using modern metrics thread, it seems like a good idea.
  21. You got me curious, so I searched and found this... http://akinokure.blogspot.com/2008/11/how-are-iq-and-interest-in-sports.html
  22. So I think my ideal broadcaster for any sport would be someone just like Jerry Burns. The (bleep)ing pitcher throws the (bleep)ing baseball to (bleep)ing Joe Mauer, and the (bleep)er just watches the (bleep)ing (bleep) go (bleep)ing by. (Bleep) it all. (Bleep)
