Article: Twins Select Tyler Jay Sixth Overall
Siehbiscuit replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Completely disagree on "ruining" him by having him start. There's no basis for this. He hasn't only been a three out guy. The kids arm has low mileage and has 3 good pitches. Give the kid a chance.- 111 replies

Article: MLB Draft Preview: Final Mock
Siehbiscuit replied to Jeremy Nygaard's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
This is a draft I would take the financial risk on Cameron or medical risk with Aiken. Worst case is they don't sign and we have the number seven pick in a much stronger draft next year. -
Good article. Although, we'd once again be in the mid to high 5's and worst in all of MLB in team ERA. I'm all for selling high in prospects and players, but if we are ever going to compete we have to have pitching. We finally get someone resembling ane ace so we can deal him?

Twins Minor League Report (AFL Week 1): Rosario Comes Out Hitting/Running
Siehbiscuit commented on Steve Lein's blog entry in The Hanging SL
Minus the throwing arm, I see Rosario having an Alex Gordon-type ceiling. Good range in LF, average arm, but hit for average and 14-18 HR's with a lot of doubles. He could be a long-term answer in LF. Probably not in 2015 though.- 6 comments

Article: Buxton and Sano: Maybe the Time is Now
Siehbiscuit replied to Steven Buhr's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
At the end of 2013 there were very few who thought these two should be on the 2014 Opening Day roster. They are essentially in the EXACT same spot as they were at the end of the 2013 season! Buxton was overwhelmed in ST last year and also didn't show very well last year in the AFL. Buxton can earn his way up this year, but he has got to blow the doors off the way Trout did (Trout was a late call-up in 2011 and struggled). Buxton wasn't ready after last year and with nearly an entire year off he needs to improve improve at the minor league level in 2015 with a late call up as an option. Sano did get some talk of making the opening day roster, but was likely heading down to AA. Sano should be in the exact same spot as last year.- 97 replies

I was about to label Kepler a "Looks like Tarzan, plays like Jane" type of guy until his 2nd half. He definitely look the part, but he finally is starting to put it together. VERY encouraged by him!

Article: If I Owned the Twins
Siehbiscuit replied to Steven Buhr's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
To solve our temporary CF problem and our long-term LF problem, would you consider a move for Matt Kemp? If we give up a good prospect (say Rosario or Polanco), but they have to eat half the contract? He may realize his potential with the spotlight off of him in Hollywood. BUT is he a big enough name to draw fans?- 60 replies

Article: Where Does Pelfrey Fit In?
Siehbiscuit replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Strongly agree with the Pelfrey move to the pen idea. I wouldn't care if Meyer started next year and pitched out of the pen for all of April and maybe into May before he and Pelfrey swapped roles. This would get Meyer some lower leverage experience and keep his innings limit under control early. Pelfrey has always had velocity, why not use it out of the pen vs just DFA'ing him? Most great RP's were once failed starters. He has the tools. -

Article: The Real Brian Dozier?
Siehbiscuit replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Polanco may be an unknown, but IF the Twins could get a High A to AA pitcher (think Alex Meyer trade) the Twins do have Escobar and Santana to play 2B and SS. Getting talent is ALWAYS important and if the Twins want to pursue pitching via this method, then I am on board. I value pitching in both quantity and quality above all else. If they went this way I would be okay. The potential for a frontline starter is worth, IMO, the dropoff of a Dozier to Escobar/Santana dropoff. Dozier is going to need to prove his ability to hit off-speed stuff consistently before HR's show up again. See the fangraphs article referenced above. Dozier feasted on fastballs over the last 18 months and pitchers have adjusted. Its his turn now. If he can, he has the potential to be a top5-8 2B in all of baseball. Dozier is essential as a building block, either as a player or as a very tradeable asset. -
Article: The Defensive Dilemma
Siehbiscuit replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I can't disagree what most of you are saying (minus the move Mauer to the OF talk), but is it oversimplifying to think that even with Gold Glovers at EVERY position our pitching staff would still give up a ton of hits? Our pitchers, even those that are the "groundball specialists" don't induce enough "weak" contact. When Gibson is on, like the June starts, the defense behind him all of a sudden looked good. It's not a coincedence. Bad defense is magnified by bad pitching. Poorly hit balls aren't the ones fans should worry about our OF screwing up. Its the plodding to the gaps and being able to actually make a play on something sharply hit that leads to disaster. A guy like Deduno was passed over by EVERY team in the league numerous times, but the Twins threw him out there time after time. Walks have little to do with the defense (although, more confidence in your defene might prevent some nibbling). Kevin Correia had to be overpaid to come here, no one wanted him when he could go anywhere. The bottomline is that our lineup isn't the problem. Or defense isn't THE problem, but could improve. The problem is our pitch to contact pitchers are pitching to HARD contact. Not the defense. -
Article: The Defensive Dilemma
Siehbiscuit replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The 29th out of 30 metric isn't all on the defense. No one here is questioning an outfield of Willingham, Hicks and Arcia (Parmalee, Colabello, Santana too) is bad. But is there a stat (I'm sure their is) that shows batted ball speed? The balls that are hit off of our pitchers seem to be squared up more than other team's pitchers. What I'm saying is is strikeouts lower total chances, but good pitchers make the hitters hit their pitch. It may be beaten into the ground or a lazy pop fly. Bad pitching gives up sceaming liners all over the place (See most Nolasco starts). There is a reason 5 tool players are hard to find. They are rare. Either they can't hit or they struggle to field. Ben Revere could hit sans the power, but all we cared about here was the lack of arm. We aren't unhitching our wagon to Arcia or any of our cheap young players. We NEED better pitching. That is the best way to help our poor defensive players. Give them less opportunities to screw up and make the balls in play more routine. -
If I start spitting in my office the way players do in theirs (in the field, in the batter's box, on the mound) should they be fired. I probably should stop the snot rockets too! Sports, ISN'T the real world. Throwing baseballs at a defenseless batter is immature, but its also an acceptable practice. Managers screaming at the authority figure from one inch away isn't "real world." Sports and its behaviors are in a different category, so i recommend the "holier than thou" approach stop.

What to do with Kurt Suzuki?
Siehbiscuit commented on Eric R Pleiss's blog entry in Beyond the Metrodome
I'd be willing to walk away. He is playing great, but Pinto is the future. If he wanted another year at $5 million, I'd be okay. This still is Kurt Suzuki. -
NFL Mock Draft 8.0 with trades
Siehbiscuit commented on travis_aune's blog entry in Blog travis_aune
I would love to see the Vikes trade down far enough to add two first rounders! I'd rove to see them get Shazier, if they do not go for Mosely. He is INCREDIBLY talented and athletic. I also prefer Bortles to Bridgewater. Nice mock. -
I really hope so!!!

Adding to the Joe Mauer discussion
Siehbiscuit commented on rogrulz30's blog entry in "And we'll see ya' ... tomorrow night."
MAJOR OVERREACTION! The numbers will be there at the end of the year. If you want the guy to become Prince Fielder, then you will be disappointed. He is striking out more and likely because he is trying to hit for more power. In regards to the leadership stuff: Making the most money on your team doesn't make you a "leader." Being able to influence others is leadership. His professionalism on and off the field is leadership. He may be a lead by example type of guy. Michael Jordan was the leader of the Bulls, but often wasn't the highest paid player. Money is NOT the issue when it comes to leadership. -
The A's have definitely been picking a lot of college player in the last decade, but so have other organizations. The A's were the first to take this analytical approach to both the field and the draft, but others have followed suit. The A's appear to still favor the odds, but maybe the talent far outweighed the risk the last couple years. The organizations behavior still is strongly in favor of the college guys.

A Look At The Numbers: Yu Darvish vs. Masahiro Tanaka
Siehbiscuit commented on twinsfan34's blog entry in Blog twinsfan34
I see these two as the Japanese version of Randy Johnson and Greg Maddux. One thing that stands out to me is that Darvish appears to be improving in most areas, save for the hiccup in his age 22 season (injury and missed about 5 starts). Tanaka has seen a pretty substantial decline in SO/9 and seems to have peaked in his age 22 season and is less of a Darvish/Really HIGH SO guy and more of the Johnson-type. Tanaka still can strike out plenty of guys, but he will do it differently, a la Maddux. His walk rate is incredible as are most of his secondary #'s. If I am going to invest ~$100M in a guy I want to see gas, with results. If I were the Twins FO, the declining K rate would concern me. Then I would laugh at myself for being a complete toolbox and go blow all of Pohlad's $$$, cuz our current rotation is a clown show. -
Pitching and Playoffs: Through the Farm System, Free Agency, or Trades?
Siehbiscuit commented on twinsfan34's blog entry in Blog twinsfan34
Not to derail the thread, but idenitfying ptiching prospects early comes down to scouting. Scouting is an area that the Twins value and feel is a strength (I'm not objecting). The problem is that until recently the Twins have not pursued this avenue for acquiring young pitching prospects. The A's do this better than ANYBODY. Trade off a good looking veteran at their peak value for high upside, low minors pitching. Terry Ryan has gotten off to a good start with the Meyer and May trades, but he needs to continue doing this ever off-season. -
Looking Ahead: My Realistic 2015 Minnesota Twins roster
Siehbiscuit commented on shs_59's blog entry in Blog shs_59
If there is anyway that Diamond is being considered for a starting spot we are still in major trouble. Meyer, Gibson, May all need to be in the starting rotation with two others that are likely not in our organization currently. I wouldnt be surprised if Ryan Pressley is stretched out to become a starter as well. Burton will be gone and Fien will fill in as the setup guy. I also wouldn't rule out Florimon still being here. Dozier isn't going to go back to SS, IMO. Mauer will still be the everday catcher in 2015, IMO as well. Pinto primary backup. Hermann will fill a backup catcher/4th OF role. Parmalee will be 1st base or bust by 2015. -
Span vs Revere (Final Numbers)
Siehbiscuit commented on AllhopeisgoneMNTWINS's blog entry in Blog AllhopeisgoneMNTWINS
I agree. Revere is also still very young (starts next season at 24, Span, 29) and there's no reason that he can't still become better than Span. If Revere, improved next year by nothing more than drawing 10 more walks, his line changes to .300/.350/.387 and 10 more trips to first means more opportuinties for SB's and runs scored! Get something for Span while he is still a sought after commodity and let's roll with Revere.
