  1. Aaron had a so-so game against Norfolk on June 8. He was engaged in a 0-0 pitchers' duel through 5 innings, but three of those innings were a struggle for him with multiple baserunners. He did have a clean 1-2-3 inning in the third and fifth. But repeatedly walking the tightrope was too tall a task, and in the top of the sixth the Tides broke through for 3 earned runs on four base hits (two doubles). Slegers pitched into the seventh and another clean inning was within his grasp, but he departed with two outs after walking cleanup hitter Brandon Snyder and thus reaching 106 pitches; his line would have looked a little better if he could have put that chump away. All told, he gave up 8 hits and 3 walks in those 6.2 innings, and got 4 strikeouts. Rochester countered with 2 runs in the bottom of that fateful 6th inning, but that's the way the score remained. The game lowered his season ERA ever so slightly, to 4.23.
  2. I've been a little remiss with my adoptee Felix. He had two good games in my absence. June 7 saw him control the Jackson Generals in an early (11 am) start at home, registering 9 strikeouts in 6.2 innings. He scattered 7 hits and a walk well enough to surrender only 2 runs, en route to a 7-2 win for Chattanooga. He crossed the 100-pitch threshold during a strikeout, and that was it for his day. Five nights later, he induced fewer strikeouts (5) but had arguably the better game, shutting out Montomery on the road on only 3 hits and 2 walks in 7 full innings. Again, the pitch count probably ended his labors, as he reached 95 pitches at the end of the seventh. (Mason Melotakis took good care of the 2-0 lead he was entrusted with, making 5 of his 6 outs on strikeouts, and the Lookouts tacked on 4 insurance runs in the top of the ninth for a 6-0 laugher.) All this hard work brings Felix Jorge's season ERA down to precisely 3. His strikeouts per 9 innings ratio is only 6.3, while his WHIP (walks plus hits per inning) is a decent 1.25. He doesn't walk many, which leave him with a fine SO/W ratio of 2.38 despite not being a strikeout machine. Pitching like this in AA at age 23, he's coming along just fine.
  3. Here is another "black hat" ad service. Upper right, below the TD banner. It yanks control away and brings me back to the top of the page. I think this has been reported before.
  4. Rortvedt got his first 3-hit game of the season on June 9 versus Burlington, driving in 3 runs, and followed up yesterday, June 13, with a 2-hit game at Quad Cities, both scoring and batting in 2 runs. For the month of June, he is hitting a robust .348. A couple of doubles plus four walks give him an OPS of .899. Really, starting from mid-May he's been doing just fine, hitting .275 since May 17 - the hits have finally started falling in for him, with a BABIP in that span a representative .319. No need for a mid-season reset in Elizabethton - leave him in Cedar Rapids the rest of the year. Here's hoping we are now seeing our first sampling of the real Ben Rortvedt.
  5. My theory is a little more big-picture: FalVine are all about gearing up for the cohort that marks the next five-year window of contention. Only Rooker looks like he might contribute significantly in a year or two. The extreme emphasis on high-schoolers for the high-end-talent portion of the draft won't start to bear fruit until 2021 at the soonest. The major league team needs pitching now. They no doubt have some kind of plan for addressing it, while the current cohort still is together and productive. A major free-agent signing, a major trade involving the current pipeline of prospects... some combination. But not this draft. (Bluebirds among the new college draftees of course may always fall into one's lap.) That's my draft theory. The tactics of this draft are an interesting but secondary matter. The strategy is much easier to execute when the constraint of worrying about the current 40-man roster is removed. That's how I read the 1:1 pick, and most of what followed.
  6. Can we option Byron to New York and then call him back "up" when he learns a few things?
  7. Moderator's note: TD has a clear policy on respectful posting. The latter post here is far out of bounds. However, the self-promotion in the first post is what invites it. Don't make it be about yourself; don't make it be about other posters.
  8. Wow, the summer just flew by. September scoreboard watching already?
  9. We are Borg of Borg. Redundancy is irrelevant.
  10. We're still talking about a chocolate factory, right?
  11. This rotation is Unsafe At Any Speed. Which, too often, is under 90 MPH.
  12. Not much hope for those of us in the Eastern zone, eh?
  13. I come in late and walk into all this fretting. Check on Gameday, and find that we're up. 11-5, even! Nothing to worry about. At least, unless Gib-... oh, right, he is pitching. Well, even if he comes out, the bullp-... oh, wait. We're doomed.
  14. Moderator's note: Look, the moderators have been clear all through the draft process, that it's a given we are all amateurs, and that real judgement of any draft isn't possible for a few years at least. And yet we are all entitled to discuss the proceedings, if done respectfully. Please don't attempt to squelch the opinions of others. Discuss the topic, not the qualifications of the other posters. (This is addressed to all posters, not specifically you.)
  15. Since Lewis wasn't on anyone's radar to sign in the top 2, that I recall, it's possible even "greedy Scott Boras" commits to a bonus like you named. It was pretty well known that Cincy had eyes for Greene, putting Lewis 3rd at best. Locking in versus gambling for a little more as an actual #3 slot but risking a drop to #7 as I saw in one mock would be an easy decision IMO.
  16. Yes, it can be the difference between a 14-3 loss and a 14-4 loss. Over the course of a season these can add up.
  17. Autoplay ad with sound for some kind of Crohn's Disease malarky. While the ad's playing, the screen pretty much freezes up. Thus difficult to locate on the TD page, but I think I did a screen capture of it - it's the ad on the right:
  18. I am concerned about Chris Giminez. He doesn't seem to be able to keep his ERA below 9 for very long at a time. Does he have minor league options? Perhaps he can get his pitching repertoire together with a stint in Rochester.
  19. Good, because yesterday's game seems to have been unwatchable.
  20. If you plan to have kids and think you can compartmentalize the topic of children from a question asking for marriage advice... well, you need more help than any of us can offer.
  21. I can't claim it as my own. I'm not religious but we got married in my wife's church, and the pre-marriage class they required had that little nugget of wisdom which I carried with me. If you are planning on having children, I will share another nugget from a co-worker many years ago: when you go from 2 kids to 3, remember that you have to go from a man-to-man defense to a zone. We wound up with 3, and I thought of that principle many times during the years of soccer practice, PTA meetings and cub scout camps.
