  1. Probably something similar to what we could have gotten two years prior to that for Jose Berrios and Jorge Polanco.
  2. When Gibson's hitting his spots, nobody's talking about nibbling no more.
  3. Element of surprise, I presume. Unfortunately, he did it on what would have been ball four. And then half-swung at ball five.
  4. I keep forgetting: Schoop is not a fast base runner.
  5. I never could shake that same feeling, even when he was working between the lines.
  6. Little Nicky Punto, doing guest color commentary, has himself a little bit of a pot belly. Never would have guessed that of him.
  7. And... erased by a pretty double play. Patience and urgency in the right combination was key on that'un.
  8. Bert didn't say "no-hitter", but he placed the jinx anyway by stating that Gibson had retired all the batters he has faced, starting the new inning. Boom, a single. You'd think a major-leaguer would have been taught the basics.
  9. Pretty sure the folks who voted for our President didn't and still don't care whether he is good at spelling or not. It distresses me how little the public at large values the skills I happen to have.
  10. FWIW, here is what the Official Scorer at the game has to say: "High throw but should have been caught. I thought he would have put Gordon out so it was a missed out error and no RBI."
  11. He left out: True story ... True story.
  12. That argument is black-and-white - die versus not die. But it's the quality of life that should matter more. Having a heart attack at 48 and living a diminished life until finally succumbing just past a 60th birthday is nobody's idea of a good "way out". You can't guarantee a good or bad outcome, and I know better than to be smug, but man, there are strong correlations.
  13. "Magical Misery Tour" "With A Little Hindrance From My Friends" "Here Comes The Run" "Round-Tripper" (Blake Parker's entrance theme)
  14. Yep. A double and a walk, followed by a sac-bunt ... and then "oh, if only the throw were better or the catch made, we'd have wriggled out of this." It can't be a clean inning every time, but lately we've been wriggling out of too many jams.
  15. But what is this thread's name??? (The name "Sam" needs to be officially retired forever.)
  16. "Our mop-up reliever is red hot! Your mop-up reliever ain't doodly squat!"
  17. If Gilberto Celestino isn't part of a trade package for a very good reliever, I'm going to be very disappointed in the trading acumen of our front office. He's the unnecessary outfielder they took in partial exchange for Pressly last year, and if he turns out not to be fungible... I just won't know what to think. That, plus the draft strategy of overloading on corner-type outfielders and miscellaneous middle infielders, only works if you can flip them for what you actually need when the window is open. We need three more lights-out relievers, if we're to make any noise in the post-season. Having whiffed in the free-agent market, it's gotta be trades, or else some bluebird rookie who is converted to a max-effort one-inning guy as someone else already suggested.
  18. The panel would also have accepted: http://www.baseball-almanac.com/players/pics/dave_cash_autograph.jpghttp://www.thebaseballcube.com/cards/9714.jpg
  19. "TRIPLE dumbass on you!"
