    Grown-up power numbers seemed to be the only thing missing from his minor-league resume. He's now reached a personal best in HR, in fewer PA than the past two seasons. Checkbox, checked.

    I'm sorry. It's not my intention to be so negative and downright snide. But today, looking at last night's pitching results for both the majors and AAA, it feels like an under-engineered roster that has come this far but is starting an inevitable collapse, one that no quantity of Tristan Gray heroics is going to stop. Kudos to whoever has the magic wand that has held things together this long.

His past two seasons in capsule: Picked up on waivers from the Yankees by the White Sox, Purchased by the Padres. Suspended by the league for intentionally hitting a batter. "Traded" to the Pirates for future considerations. Picked up on waivers by the Reds. DFAed and passed through waivers, and he elected free agency. And here we are.

    The solution, for Jenkins, or any batter, is to be playable against lefties. If the lineup is too full of players where the opposing manager can walk to the mound and tap his left wrist, and *poof* the rally ends, the Twins manager has to take steps to compensate - or else the team takes their lumps waiting for the player to grow. Don't be that player, Jenkins. Show us you're not, at AAA.

    This discussion prompted me to check Walker's minor-league L/R splits. The past three seasons he's had a typical split, like OPS .200 points lower against lefties than righties. If they brought him up now, he might need to be platooned the way Larnach is - no one wants to see a top prospect flail. It could be that one of the specific things they want him to work on is to show evidence that top lefties won't make him look foolish when he comes up - a "box to check" as the OP phrased it.

    After another 2-hit game his OPS is 1.233 for his last 4 games. The BABIP gods probably still owe him, too.

    He turned 24 five days ago. The hitting upgrade could still turn out to be himself. Kirby Puckett didn't hit his fifth major league homer until after his 26th birthday.

    Derek explained Alex Jackson's presence on the roster, presumably to the satisfaction of all: this allowed the manager to pinch-hit Jeffers and provoke an IBB after which he came right back out of the game in favor of a pinch-runner, allowing Brooks Lee to come up and drive home the insurance run. How many teams have an Alex Jackson of their own who can do all that for them? 🙃

    Please write more of these articles. Given the likely lead-time in getting articles published, I'm going to guess that the past three games for Kody (OPS 1.227) are a direct result of your anti-jinx. Kudos.

    Once again, the clickbaity headline is way more extreme than the body of the article or its conclusion. I'm honestly tired of it. I came into reading this with an eye toward what I wanted to say, and then found that it wasn't necessary.

    False advertising. Larnach has yet to be an All-Star. The FTC will hear about this, if it still exists.

    Thank you for pointing this out. The safest and simplest path from here forward is to pretend I never posted that ****ing thing at all. Usually I pride myself on fact-checking and "trust but verify", but you'll note that in the post I stated that I didn't want to invest further time, and I made the grievous error of trying to wrap up the study quickly and thus I trusted my source. The Rays' W-L record was exactly reversed from what it should be, and it turns out there were other errors sprinkled through as well. Add to that, the person I was responding to on TD didn't care for the methodology at all, that of combining so many seasons to get a baseline, and so I'm just not going to invest the time to repair the correctness and derive new conclusions. All in all, I appreciate the fact-checking and am humbled that I didn't do it myself when I had the chance. I'll close by quoting a renowned philosopher. "Never mind."

    There are 40 players on the roster. Only 28 get to play in the majors in September. Some will be injured at that point, but there will be others who deserve some playing time and won't get it. I'd give priority to those who not only show sufficient bat but also can play a position at at least an average level of accomplishment, and I'm not sure if Mendez has shown that as yet. The bat alone would have to be nearly at the Juan Soto level of accomplishment for me to think differently; of course Soto was age 19 when he made his case for promotion (and it wasn't September).
