  1. When we lose in the 2027 post-season I do not want Duran out there collecting the save in the final game. When we win the 2027 World Series I want Duran closing out that last game. Either scenario, Duran's on my no-trade list, regardless of the 2023 benefits.
  2. He's young, scrappy and hungry. One thing we know for sure, Xander's not throwing away his shot! Bet he never gets tired of the reference.
  3. The fun of BTV is it tries to think like a GM, taking into account remaining contract cost as well as talent. For a variety of reasons it can be way off. But it's an interesting way to start the thought process. BTV would suggest we could snag Goldschmidt for a motley collection headlined by Blaine Enlow and Junior Severino and Yasser Mercedes. What BTV doesn't/can't take into account, with top-end talent, is the "we've got him and you don't" factor. Yeah, Goldie is in his decline phase and has a considerable salary attached to him. So what? "You want him, or not?" say the Cardinals. "No skin off our nose. We still like him., and we're not writing off 2024 The Yankees have been asking about him, though."
  4. SDI is itself a "bringing together" of several independent metrics. This makes it a worse mishmash than OPS, on the other hand it smooths out the outliers. Anyone who doesn't like SDI will dislike its components even more, and for good and consistent reasons. Defense is cursed with smaller samples sizes than the offense, so it's an unsolvable problem. But the eye test is also an unsolvable problem for different reasons. We just have to muddle through, and accept that consensus will be hard to reach. Or, we can, you know, be at each others' throats about it.
  5. Especially considering SDI is nowadays a portion of how Gold Gloves are awarded. I guess the OP's point is that some players have moved up since earlier rankings this year.
  6. Good plan. The pitcher needs to be ready for the short-hop, though.
  7. Then do not trade AK for Goldschmidt. Bad enough we need him to gather in the wide throws from Julien at 2B, now we'll be expecting someone to deal with occasional three-hoppers from 3B.
  8. You don't have to have more arm to play 3B than SS, but you don't really want to have less either. Unlike some players' moves off of SS, Polanco's mark against him was the arm. Even at 2B he sometimes makes throws that look baffling and seem like he's straining. Unfortunately I don't envision Julien's game being impressive at 3B either. To say the least. I don't see how Julien and Polanco coexist on a roster, except on a team that can commit to DH for one, and I think Polanco's defense is better than Julien's and it's a shame to relegate a young'un to DH. Probably they can work with Julien to raise his defense from "adequate" to "below average" at 2B. So, concur with trading Polanco if we can. Having him play 2B during rehab in the minors to demonstrate that he's back will have to suffice. And I hate to trade Jorge. He's one of my favorites. Those laser-beam eyes when he's at bat.....
  9. Agreed. The article also gave short shrift to Kirilloff's defense at first base. I hadn't had much chance to see his play until recently, but if Eddie Julien is going to play a lot at second base, I want Alex there at first to save him from as many errors as humanly possible. He saved at least two that I noticed in the past few games, one last night, that I didn't see how was possible without wrenching his back or otherwise hurting himself. Goldie's defense isn't his calling card and I doubt those plays would have been made, likewise with our other 1B candidates. Defense at 1B is of course never a deciding factor, but it should not be summarily dismissed either.
  10. Apparently trading for Goldschmidt will make Austin Martin a major league caliber player by October. Lot of other wishful thinking going on in this analysis. I'm not trading away young pitching for a year and a half of Goldschmidt. I'm not trading Kirilloff even-up for Goldschmidt. The former stands to hit as well as the latter, with better fielding, for less money, for a longer stay. Goldie is a proven major league hitter, and then some, but the economics are all against. This deal is a non-starter IMO.
  11. Might as well just give him the guaranteed fourth year, then.
  12. Great to see our team tough it out for a win that certainly could have gone the other way.
  13. Yeah, a lack of foresight by Duran. What a bush leaguer.
  14. And a gorgeous pitch sequence for the third out.
  15. What a beautiful pitch for that first out (finally!).
  16. Does Kirilloff still get to wear that funny yellow hat?
  17. It's even better in the original French.
  18. Emilio turned into a major league pitcher so gradually we didn't even notice.
