What's In A Name?

It's been a few years since I did this. You'll either love it or hate it. Here are some anagrams of the 25-man roster. I don't claim a lot of creativity, and I used a program to generate possibilities. I spared the mods some grief by leaving out the dirty ones. Some names are pretty barren (had to cheat and use Mauer's given name Joseph), while others give an embarrassment of riches and you might think up better ones. Or you might even spot some typos/errors, because I don't have an editor to check my work. Burton, Jared Jarred On Tub Be Rotund Jar Red Banjo Rut Correia, Kevin I Overrank Ice Arrive Nice, OK? 2. I think Gardy pretty much spelled out his plan, when he said a couple of weeks ago he wanted a bat with some pop on the bench. He'll augment one very weak spot in the lineup with a better bat at a strategic moment. The game went according to script in this respect.
3. Looks like the Twins' vendors won't be selling bottled beer this year. / For the twelve-year-olds reading this: it's because the Twins LOST THE OPENER! Memorize this one, you can use it pretty much every year.
4. Careful, there are 12-year-olds reading this site.
5. Benny Hill style Yakkity Sax would also work.
6. Yes, that's the strategy. Let the 8th-9th-10th place hitters in the line up go quietly, rope-a-dope style, and then let our leadoff guy Mauer come out swinging (or quite possibly walking) to start the 9th.
7. I'm not sure we wanted to tie it up or take the lead quite so soon anyway. Let the Tiger bats snooze a while longer. Lie in wait for the ninth...
8. In my program he's listed as a reliever.
9. I don't see how you pinch hit for a guy batting .500.
10. Never could stand those Canajuns.
11. Hm. After five innings, three hits. Mauer, Morneau and Florimon: One Of These Things Is Not Like The Other Ones...
12. Dozier in the 8th slot makes for a potentially decent comp as well, unless you are forecasting really bad things.
13. Not possible to edit an article? Not good form to change content in reaction to comments of course, but to fix a glitch seems worth it.
14. Presumably we'd have to put him on the 40-man. Who would you drop? What's his upside?
15. I had good luck hanging back and picking Mastroianni from the dregs left over, so I'll probably wait until we hear the official word.
16. All right, my brother, maybe I'm being unfair, so let me go back to the first thing you said in this thread, which started me toward framing a response: > For me, (and I'm not even "down" on him, more "not sold on him") I just get a little nervous that there is a reason why Philly was so quick to give up on him so soon. So "a little nervous" isn't really understatement, you do mean only a little. Still, would you ever *not* say something like this about *any* prospect the Twins would ever trade for? Are you a little nervous about Alex Meyer, that there is a reason Washington was so quick to give up on him? Why shouldn't these teams be "a little nervous" that the Twins scouts have spotted a small tweak that can be made to turn these pitchers into even more than they have shown so far?
17. To me, Burnett offers an object lesson in a problem with drafting high school pitchers. He was 17 years old at Elizabethton, and his progression through age through age 21 looked pretty nice. I forget the roster rules but at some point around then he had to be added to the 40-man. Even with all the concerns about his stuff, his record suggests a guy who will have a productive career age 26-30 or so. But a guy drafted young and not progressing faster than that, becomes expensive both in terms of the 40-man roster spot to protect him until he finishes developing, and in terms of salary when he actually becomes productive since he now has 3 years of service time already. We know drafting HS arms is risky, but Burnett is an example of a hidden kind of risk, where some other team stands to gain whatever benefit from your own lengthy investment of time and resources.
18. Yeah, I'm more on the fence with him, but it's troubling that even when he was racking up the gold gloves he was on an All Star team only 3 times, and earned a couple of votes for MVP just one year.
19. Well, it's basically my fault. I didn't see a thread for the day's game, I wanted to make a tangential comment that I didn't think was worth a thread of its own, and this thread was already discussing an aspect of the game so I thought it might fit. No intent to threadjack, but mea culpa anyway.
20. And I guess if I'm hearing what you're saying, one would never make a trade with another team for a player who's been in the pros for more than a year.
21. I for one learned something last season about the relative value of arm versus legs in that position.
22. A lot less than I wound up getting, and I wasn't even trolling, honest. / except the part about Slama
23. Almost every personnel decision could be seen in this light. For every trade, there's another team's scouts who gave it the green light to give up the stud your scouts say to get. For every draft pick except #1, there is a team ahead of you whose scouts said not to pick the guy your scouts want. For every free agent you succeed in signing to an offer, there are 29 teams' scouts who evidently weren't as high on him to offer as much. Ultimately, you can pay attention to the red flags, but trust in your scouts more than the other guys'.
24. I have an opinion on whether a Civic is better than a Sentra, too, but what I really wish is that a 911 was in my garage.
