  1. You've got the quote wrong: "Ah, dead hookers. The cause of, and the solution to, all of life's problems."
  2. The weather's also been used to explain bad pitching performances like Pelfrey's. I'd be curious if anyone's done a study that tries to either separate myth from fact, or can identify what kinds of player are helped more by heat, cold, drizzle, meteor showers, and Godzilla sightings.
  3. > The dinger was Plouffe's fourth this season, placing him second on the team behind Josh Willingham. There are other ways to express the futility one month into what was supposed to be a pretty good offense this season, but this is about as good as any.
  4. Not a showstopper, but Thomas is not on the Twins' 40-man roster. If you bring him up, you have to remove someone else and expose him to waivers.
  5. We'll probably never see another player with an OPS this low this far into a season.
  6. He didn't walk; they paid his airfare to get out of town.
  7. Not Doug, either.
  8. Yes, because the fifth inning and the start of the sixth on April 29 were so similar to the fifth and sixth in today's game.
  9. It has been a week and I still haven't seen a good answer to USArmyChief's question.
  10. Maybe this isn't more than average for a team, but at this moment I'm thinking the Twins have 3 guys whose slates need to be wiped clean beyond a certain point - Hicks before April 14 for his horrendous start, Escobar before the last week of April for hitting way over his head, and Pelfrey who could well have been shaking the rust off for the first month. Maybe Correia should also have April erased but he's not like the other three in that I can't point to any particular moment where something would have changed. I'm not saying I'm inside any player's head, just that Hicks being a touted rookie and Pelfrey just getting back from TJ are both temporary things that may not have long-term implications on their skill sets, and Escobar (who I definitely like in the long run) might have been able to take advantage of there not yet really being a book on him yet. The book on Hicks, by contrast, seemed to be "don't throw this guy any more strikes after you get two on him" the first month.
  11. Perkins hadn't had a lot of work in the past couple of weeks, and the previous two innings of "let's get him into a game" weren't exactly lights out. I was hoping today's game would prove them to be just momentary blips. Of course, three games is still Small Sample Size, but I can't help wondering.
  12. Willingham atones for his earlier baserunning blunder by not getting on base this time.
  13. Blah blah blah there is a bus leaving after the game, blah blah blah be under it.
  14. Still talking about dogs, right?
  15. Does Gardy tempt fate by sending him out for the 7th? Only 91 pitches, so it's not an automatic shower just on that basis.
  16. At work, our management is always telling us to do more with less. Twins seem to have that one backwards.
  17. Do not overlook Arcia's alarming lack of clutchness in the on-deck circle. They lost a game about a week ago with him swinging the bat feebly while on-deck in the ninth. I see he managed to make it to the batter's box this time. Progress.
  18. All except for the blazing speed.
  19. The catcher really Doumitted that 58-foot curveball.
  20. The on-line PBP leaves a bit to be desired on this one - what happened, Mauer started to head for home and then turned back, and Hammer with his blazing speed was already two-thirds of the way to third?
  21. How long a leash do we give Kluber?
  22. Small point, but Hardy was still under team control; the team just didn't want to pay him at arbitration/market price, and traded him for flame-throwing peanuts.
  23. A trick I learned a while back when reading Dear Abby, instead of the answer Abby gives, substitute "Dear Hurting in Alabama: you sound fat." Not politically correct, but there's a kernel of humor in there maybe. And inside that kernel, maybe even an atom of insight now and then: the world often doesn't treat overweight people with kindness.
