  1. What are you going to get in trade for a rule-5 guy who had one year that might have been pitching over his head? Sure, shop him, shop anyone - but don't be surprised when the offers amount to waiver-wire fodder.
  2. How galling is it to see that 'W' next to Slowey's name?
  3. Do I have to pull this car over and ban you all?
  4. See if you can get James to help work out a trade involving some members of your family.
  5. Yeah, I've never had that happen.
  6. I don't know. I've never Duensed. *bmmtshhh*
  7. Considering that my mother is dead, I tip my cap to you for a temperate reply.
  8. That probably came out worse than you were intending...
  9. Does Mauer have a lifetime 1.000 BA against Slowey? @babyjesus: hey HipsterKev, leading off from first base again, lol
  10. Flamin' Hot Willingham > Flamin' Hot Cheetos > Regular Cheetos > Willingham Lately
  11. *yawwwwwn* Hay guyz. Just woke up. What'd I miss?
  12. See if you can recruit Nate Silver.
  13. Is this correct? It seems opposite of my intuition: that if you have a team full of table setters, one good slugger will stand to make a huge difference, and if you have a team of low-average sluggers, getting a good OBP guy at the top of the lineup can work wonders. I don't usually ask "source, please", but if you have a link to something that explains what you described, I'd like to read it.
  14. And it's even worse than that: simply scaling SLG down by 4X doesn't help because the typical value is not 4X the typical OPS. Combining the two values is a doomed exercise. OPS is just a quick-and-dirty, fun, number.
  15. This. The one reason I've given the front office any benefit of the doubt on how they filled the gaps in this rebuilding season, is on the chance that they will pull the trigger on someone's desire to move salary, even if it's not a dump per se. I had been thinking in terms of trading an inexpensive outfielder (Willingham) for someone's better but more expensive outfielder, but hadn't found the right match to suggest.
  16. Baseball is a business, but it's also a sport. Intentionally tanking, whether at the individual player level or at the front office level, seems contrary to being sporting. It bothers me to consider it, even though the incentive is clearly there.
  17. Thin air, check. Band box, not so much: Clem's Baseball ~ Stadium dimensions Coors is actually pretty large all the way around the outfield. You have to hark back to long-ago stadiums to find larger dimensions.
  18. I think "for whatever reason" has been well enough expressed in this thread by others. If anything, I'd be curious to see a correlation run on OPS+BA. It comes from my years of experience trying something I thought should work but didn't, so try the opposite. I suspect this has been tried before, however. OPS is an apples plus oranges shorthand to get a read on a player's season, so I don't see a lot of incentive to try to patch it. Other approaches to evaluating offensive results would be better if you really want to be serious.
  19. If you include the huge run-killing effect of a CS, I suspect that the overall effect won't move the needle very much for most players, and isn't worth the effort for the casual fan.
  20. The simple answer is that he's not on the 40-man roster, so bringing him up has consequences that bringing up someone like Gibson does not. It's easy to say that the current 40-man doesn't have any future HoF pitchers on it, so no big loss if you DFA a guy and he's picked up; but if that becomes your standard operating procedure, you end up with all your marginal major-league talent being claimed, and only the real dregs remain at AAA.
  21. The bad news is, he's ready to go to Minneapolis.
  22. Now Gardy's gotta do some managin'.
