  1. I thought they're carrying Herrmann as a third catcher so Correia wouldn't have to bat.
  2. Tuned in just as Parmelee hit it - man that was deep. Hope I have brought some good luck.
  3. As well as Junior Ortiz.
  4. I looked up the next year's draft in preparation to say something snarky, but #28 was Gerit Cole who's turning out pretty good, and #92 was Bobby Lanigan, who was chosen by our own Twins and thus rules out the comparison to other teams. Rats.
  5. I dunno - we might have made the same observation during Tom Kelly's reign in the Twin Cities, and he's turned out all right as a spring instructor with every indication he'd take a full season there in stride as well.
  6. I love it - tell the world (if they're reading) that he plans to use the changeup when he is in a jam. Then go with the fastball at the letters.
  7. Got a dog named Sport?
  8. Probably the answer is in your paragraph: xFIP discounts home runs as "just one of those things". In the big picture that's probably wise, but it leaves one saying about an individual player, "but, this guy sure seems to give up a lot of them fair and square."
  9. To give your question some serious consideration: With the current 25-man roster, I'd have Colabello and Herrmann riding pine, I'd have Pinto sharing time at catcher with Suzuki and at DH with Nunez, and I'd split SS 50/50 with Santana and Escobar. I'd prefer to keep a stable batting order, so I'd go with: 1 Dozier 2B 2 Mauer 1B 3 Plouffe 3B 4 Kubel LF 5 Suzuki / Pinto C 6 Parmelee RF 7 Nunez / Pinto DH 8 Hicks CF 9 Santana / Escobar SS A few further notes: the order alternates lefty/righty as much as possible, it puts the youngest guys lowest where I like to see guys break in until they establish themselves over half a season at least, and it clusters the basepath plodders so as to not clog things up for the faster guys who I have hitting lower in a kind of poor-man's top of the lineup for the 2nd/3rd inning. Bottom line, it's a pretty limited roster, so this lineup would change with any infusion of talent (or someone currently on the roster stepping up).
  10. Same argument would of course apply to any other player under any other metric.
  11. Stolen from snepp's Countdown to Opening Day.
  12. I completely agree with this writeup. Dozier seems to have a huge baseball IQ, reflected in his making extremely good decisions on the basepaths early enough that he just proceeds with so much confidence that it's a joy to watch. He doesn't decide he's going to third when he is a couple of steps short of second base and sees how the outfielder is handling the ball, he makes the decision much earlier than that based I assume on careful study of the outfielder's tendencies and abilities.
  13. That it's a team in transition and the Twins themselves would agree "don't build [a team you expect to contend for a few years] like this"?
  14. It's way down low on my list of household tasks to try and do something about the cartons of cards in our garage storage shelves. Most of the cards that would be valuable were played with when my brother and I were kids, so a dealer would have no interest; the vast majority of the cards are just commodity cards in perfect condition that likewise would draw no interest. Since I'm nowhere near the Twin Cities I can't even invite any of you to take a look and admire (or scoff, or make an offer); and like I said, it's low on my priority list so I haven't approached any dealers locally (the one I know of in a shopping mall closed, no doubt due to a dwindling customer base). In any case, it won't be funding my retirement.
  15. It's either you or the hat. You'd think major league suppliers would have better quality control.
  16. He retired three today alone.
  17. I suppose the key for him is knowing when to slap.
  18. Glad to know Target Field fans are getting a treat.
  19. Would he make that bet on any given stretch of 27 PA if it had been Florimon?
  20. I'm sorry I missed them. Did the batters?
  21. You prepare for some pitchers by noting that they tend to beat themselves and so you plan to wait for that. Hernandez not being like that doesn't mean you're not prepping for him, but that you plan (for instance) to be aggressive at a different time than for a less-talented opponent.
  22. Back from my short hike, what did I miss?
