  1. I visited ChiTown's one time but got bored playing Connect The Dots.
  2. I say this all the time, but: Plouffe is slow!
  3. His fans all shouted this slogan: Hooray Beer! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BfGkhhm4vXw
  4. Man, having the starter go 7 lets the manager simply go with Plan A for the bullpen in the 8th and 9th. Unaccustomed. / imagine if we ever get a couple more shut down types...
  5. With all the old farts posting here, I hardly need do more than mention there was another guy known as Goofy Gomez once upon a time.
  6. Some guy they invited to Yankee old-timer games.
  7. I think I was on record last year as not believing in it. Nice looking totals seemed overly affected by a handful of blowout wins. The season ending loss to David Price by a shutout told me all I needed to know about their status as a quality offense. I was hoping for some growth this season, but have been disappointed.
  8. "Was it good for you too?"
  9. Not one of the site owners here is a threat to uncork a post like that. And if any were, I would not be moderating here - making yours the mootest of moot questions. Chances are I speak for the other mods too, in this regard. That said, the mods feel empowered to raise any topic with the owners here. And vice versa.
  10. Didn't see a need. Some stats you just memorize.
  11. I was away for a bit, and am surprised to come back and find that no one has looked up the correct answer. 0-0.
  12. Two three-pitch strikeouts, third strike called, in the Twins' first two batters? Hello? / edit: Mauer with a tapper to second. Baby Steps. This has been your CBU.
  13. A one-two-three top o' the first inning stands to have improved that number for Pelfrey. CBU.
  14. First pitch by Big Pelf, fouled away. This has been your Circus Boy Update.
  15. The Dodgers also once traded for Ricky Nolasco. / obligatory mention
  16. When the protesters ever become organized and disciplined, they'll resemble an actual army, and the Atlas Shrugged crowd had better locate their fictionalized hills and head for them.
  17. Someone went to the trouble of compiling a dictionary a couple of decades ago, and I had it out for another purpose earlier tonight so it was at hand here. The Dickson Baseball Dictionary has this: "Journeyman, n.: A veteran ballplayer who is reliable but not a star; consistent rather than colorful. Because it contains the word journey, it is often applied to those who have played for several clubs." I take that phrasing to suggest that the last meaning is common but flawed. In the trades, the word journeyman has nothing to do with moving around geographically. The derivation refers to a day's work.
  18. Close game. Never would have guessed it in the first inning. G'night all.
  19. Goes against some book to put on the winning run, but Soria wasn't afraid to walk Dozier, with first base open and 1 out. Dozier was afraid not to swing at ball four. Two out.
  20. Now up to 3 hits by Schafer. Greatest managerial decision? Or greatest decision in any field of endeavor ever?
  21. Well now I feel slighted.
  22. Brings it to 5-4 going to the ninth. CBU.
  23. I can't believe I didn't think to do this earlier in the discussion, but I looked up the term in The Dickson Baseball Dictionary, copyright way back in 1989. It has "bat around, v.: when all nine batters in a team's lineup come to bat during an inning. First reference: 1880, Chicago Inter Ocean, May 19." It's just one source. But it's a source, and seemingly researched. I remain solidly in the 9 batters camp.
  24. I hear ya. It's my parakeet's bowling night, but I'm strangely unable to tear myself away from the game.
