  1. For what little it's worth, my daughter got fluent in Mandarin in college plus travel, and she got back to me quickly when I emailed her today. The suggestion she gave was that it might be close to the short I in "chimney". Between that and your suggestion, I can kind of hear what I think I've overheard in conversation, a vowel sound that is kind of incomplete to an English speaker's ears and tough to replicate with any similar word. The rendering as "Chih" might actually be as good a guide as there is. Certainly my "Chee" would sound crude and uneducated to him. It seems there is general agreement on the second half of his name as "Way". But I had a colleague some time ago whose name was simply Wei, and he assured me you could pronounce it wrongly and have it mean something else three different ways simply by rising or descending tone, and I believe him.
  2. They have played together in Rochester 2013-2014. Without digging deeply, Doug has out-OPSed James both years, and James is no longer in the part of his minor league career where much further growth can be expected. We're going to throw that out and go with 21 and 18 games this year, respectively?
  3. His eye-test performance in March had me thinking "potential bust", even. / which is one more bit of evidence that I Am Not A Scout And Never Will Be
  4. That's the other way of saying it. But IMO if taken too seriously it presents a pessimistic view that would lead to inertia at best. Instead you have to push push push. YCNHTMGP. (And yet, you have to do this without degrading your ability to draft/sign impact position players too. If it was easy everybody would be in first place.)
  5. For some technical reason that you'd have to ask Brock to explain, the Forum version of articles lack some of the features of the full article. That's why at the end there is always "Click here to view the article." Something to keep in mind when reading something here and feeling as though some visuals (still photos or video) are missing.
  6. The guy on first base.
  7. Without any direct knowledge I've been saying "Chee Way Hoo." I too will be glad if someone corrects me.
  8. Like I said, access to stats we don't have. I thirst for them, but not enough to pay what the subscription would cost.
  9. I'm a stats guy by nature. But, I would not make a decision on a young ballplayer by the stats in this case. As others have stated, there is no question about his game where it comes to defense, base running, etc. It comes down to the bat. And with the bat, it comes down to pitch recognition, evaluation of which requires either direct scouting or else access to stats that none of us has (and which amounts to the same as direct scouting). I want to know how well he is recognizing the pitches the pitcher wants him to swing at, which he will see more and more of in the majors, and that he is laying off. I want to know how well he spots the occasional mistake pitch, which he will see fewer and fewer of in the majors, and that he punishes them. I want to know how well he adjusts to tough pitches in the strike zone, which he will see more of in the majors, and that he takes them the other way or otherwise turn into opportunities. It's hard to hit .400 for a period of time without these good things going on. But I still want to know the fundamentals, if I'm the one making a franchise-shaping decision. I do not want to bring him up, and then find out he was feasting in AA on 1-0 meatballs by pitchers still learning their craft.
  10. You can't win without top pitching. You can't identify which young top pitchers will make it. Very few unheralded pitchers emerge as top talent. It's a real dilemma for any team that can't/won't go out and acquire proven top talent at top prices. I kind of like the Twins 2014 approach to the draft. Best Player Available for high first round. Pitcher after pitcher, after that for several rounds.
  11. His OPS for Toronto is roughly double what the Twins coaching staff was able to wring out of him. What eldritch wizardry do the Blue Jays perform to achieve this?
  12. Needed a fast shutter.
  13. I dunno. My dad's 92, with no life-threatening health issues confronting him and a wife and family who love him and activities to keep him occupied, but if faced with a similar discussion he might shrug and say that sometimes you go with Plan B.
  14. The tragedy of old age is not that one is old, but that one is young. - Mark Twain
  15. I never miss an opportunity to share the photo my son took at the AFL.
  16. Any news or inferences regarding his defense in Rochester?
  17. To me, this has always been the heart of the perceived problem the Twins had in getting to the postseason versus going deep in them. Guys like Little Nicky Punto take advantage of the mistakes the other team makes and is an ignitor. Come the post-season, the teams that make mistakes are gone, and LNP takes a comfortable 0-4.
  18. I'll take "Ways Chief is like RB for 25 cents, Alex."
  19. Is good news but only half the story. I'd like some eyewitness scouting reports on his routes etc in the outfield.
  20. Looks like you figured it out for yourself, in the meantime.
  21. BTW, in that book, I may have found the mother lode. Sample: Chinese Proverb: Man who stand on toilet is high on pot. The short fortune-teller who escaped from prison was a small medium at large. Possibly we have finally located the long-theorized source of much of Riverbrian's game thread starters.
  22. "Ashburyjohn". It said at the beginning, "suppose you're a bus driver".
  23. One thing a TD moderator might do is keep his radar up for copyright. I looked up the reference and it's up on the Internet as a book written up by Charlie Walker. https://books.google.com/books?id=osX1K8-ThQ4C&printsec=frontcover#v=onepage&q&f=false Just trying to keep the standards up, here.
  24. I don't know whom you mean by the real Bubbles. This? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zf45Sxlg7Lk (PG-13 language) We already have someone with that as an avatar. Nice thread starter, BTW.
