  1. The way I see it, the likelihood of each option is 1. Pelfrey, 2. Milone, 3. May. I wouldn't expect to see Meyer until his service clock is pushed back. I say Pelfrey is the front-runner mostly because Milone is likely to be the more valuable reliever, and I expect May to begin the season in AAA. Not that I like it- the Pelfrey contract reminds me of the 2nd Rondell White contract, in that the justifications for both were good Septembers following otherwise terrible seasons.
  2. Somebody fired Baerga, and I doubt that person was Vargas. It wouldn't have happened if Baerga's boss liked the work that he was doing. Not saying Vargas didn't have a finger in that soup, just that it's unlikely that Baerga is blameless here.
  3. Obviously the closers and their agents like the 9th inning specialist role. I think the managers like it too, in large part because it takes that decision out of their hands, and they aren't criticized for bringing in the wrong guy if that guy is always the same guy. The establishment of roles among relievers is way overblown, IMO. The closer knows his role, but the set-up man has the same role regardless- come in late to a game when you need some outs. The only difference for them is that they know it won't be their time to come in if the team has a three-run or less lead in the ninth inning.
  4. With Arcia doing his Delmon Young impression in left and the skeletal remains of Torii Hunter in right, the Twins need a real outfielder in center. I know that Santana didn't embarrass himself out there, but the standards need to be higher than that
  5. He hasn't been very good outside of Petco. Lucky for him Target Field has been such a paradise for Twins pitchers *snort*.
  6. I think Brett Anderson is damaged goods and I wouldn't count on any meaningful contributions from him.
  7. I don't hate this. Considering we had Arcia and Willingham in the corners last year this couldn't be worse than that... but I would like to see them pick up a very good defensive CF like Bourjos at least until Buxton is up. As for the money, I really don't care how they choose to spend 10.5 mil as long as it isn't used as an excuse to not improve elsewhere.
  8. I keep hearing about Dozier's defense... if you believe in defensive metrics at all, his defense is actually below average.
  9. I might get blasted for this idea, but I would consider trading Dozier right now for a pitcher or a left fielder. I know that Dozier is something of a fan favorite, but IMO the Twins get a little too sentimental about "their guys" and have failed to strike trades when the iron was hot. Considering what the A's just got for Donaldson I think the return could be pretty good. I would also feel pretty comfortable with Escobar taking over at 2nd base, and to be honest I think Dozier's offense is less than sustainable and his defense is flashy but not as good as advertised overall.
  10. It takes a special kind of player to flop on the level of Aaron Hicks. It seems to me like bad policy to expect the worst case scenario out of every prospect that might be promoted too early.
  11. Not saying Rosario is my top choice, but if the other options are the remains of Torii or Alex Rios, of whom I've never been a fan, I say roll with it, baby. Santana wasn't ready last year.
  12. I'd be fine with Masterson. Hunter and Rios don't do anything for me and I'd just as soon put Rosario in left field.
  13. Whoever the next Hughes is, it seems doubtful the Twins will be the ones to hit on them. They got very lucky with Hughes and we've seen just how difficult it can be to cash in big on a buy-low pitcher. I do think Masterson is a solid bet, but I want Meyer up ASAP.
  14. Just saying that the pitch count thing wasn't just a Gardy/Andy philosophy. It goes all the way down the Twins minor league system, too- the manager makes the pitching changes during the game, but he's under pressure from the FO to be extremely careful with his starters, especially the young ones. That's why I don't think a pitch count opponent like Blyleven or Morris would get the job.
  15. I think you're dreaming if you think Blyleven or Morris will be the pitching coach- there would be serious concerns from the FO that those guys wouldn't do enough to protect the team's investments.
  16. If Maddon doesn't come to MN, the reason had better not be "he wanted too much money."
  17. I don't think Schafer should have any kind of lock on a 25-man spot... he's a fourth outfielder, and his August was a mirage. Guys like him, and Fuld, and Mastro, and Presley are readily available, and if any available outfielder represents an upgrade on the spare outfielder spot the Twins should take them and let Schafer go. Just don't replace him with a clubhouse chemist like Bartlett.
  18. It's a bit ironic that Pinto took a backseat to Suzuki because of pitch-framing and throwing out runners. Those aren't exactly 'Zuke's strong suits either.
  19. I'm not saying that I'm 100% for calling them up immediately at the start of the season. I just think that Aaron Hicks is immaterial to the question.
  20. I really don't think the Hicks situation should weigh on the decision to promote Buxton and/or Sano at all. Hicks was never as good a prospect as either of those two, and sometimes a guy who looks like he's ready will come up and struggle. From what the team and media says about Hicks, it's not his skills that are holding him back. He's got some personality issues. I'm a big believer in expecting success before reacting to failure. Holding back Buxton or Sano because of Hicks seems like expecting failure. If they come up and struggle they won't be the first prospects to do so. I think they can both deal with their confidence being shaken a bit, at least better than Hicks has.
  21. The only reason I can think of for the Fox Sports Girls existence is the lowest common denominator. They're there to uh... *spark* the male viewership. My suggestions to Fox Sports - don't expose them to bright lights, don't spill water on them, and for the love of God, don't feed them after midnight.
  22. I suspect that many reports of velocity readings in the minor leagues are trumped up. Probably not the whole story, but it could be part of it.
  23. If they stay in-house, my choice would be Steinbach. That said, I know that TR said that familiarity with the organization is something he'll consider, but at this point I'm inclined to believe that familiarity is one of the main culprits that the Twins are in the situation they're in. They shouldn't be afraid to bring in a manager who has no Minnesota connections. To me, guys like Molitor, Mientkiewicz, Glynn, Mauer, and even the aforementioned Steinbach's organizational ties should be considered a net zero.
  24. It's always been my impression that Gardenhire had his favorites - I'm thinking guys like Punto, Blackburn, and Capps, whose on-field play probably didn't warrant the rope they got under Gardenhire. I'm sure every manager gets criticized for that to a degree, whether better options exist at the time or not.
  25. When Terry Ryan told Sid a few weeks ago that he expected Gardenhire to be back, I believe he meant what he said. I suspect that either the Twins told Gardenhire that some of his coaches wouldn't be brought back and Gardy decided to go with them, or the word came down from Jim Pohlad that the change had to be made.
