  1. dont know how many minor league starters Mn 'can' sign if they get 2 legit starters out of the offseason. I see Blackburn, DeVries, Gibson & probably either Walters or Deduno will start in AAA. The 4 listed are almost 'legit' style MLB pitchers....not the Walters/Deduno style of retread. If Mn has to sign a 5th starter type out of this group, Id probably go Colon as he's shown the past 2 yrs...performance enhancing or not....that he can give a team a few months of good starts.
  2. Hopefully it gives him the ability to fine tune his mechanics and ultimately get him to the level where he can contribute for the big league club his year. Its hard to tell how/if MN/front office will handle Kyle. A solid AFL could get him a starting spot (unofficially of course) without needing a spectacular spring training but a bad AFL could mean he has to dominate spring training to leave town with the big club. Twins are very conservative by nature.....BUT with Gardy's job (TR's to a lesser degree) on the line (needing to get off to a good start so as not to start the fan revolt)....will they go with Gibby to start the year or keep him in ROC for 6wks, at which time Gardy's job could be on the chopping block.
  3. Wonder how his AFL appearances will affect his spring training chances to break spring training with the Twins
  4. IF Mn deals Justin & moves Parm to 1B, who plays RF to start the year??? MN proved this Sept they will refuse to give Arcia/Hicks the job till next Sept. If they start the season with the one that ended the season (esp Florimon) ......they will lose 90gms again even if they improve the pitching (in the way Terry Ryan will do it). Why is Terry Ryan even considering keeping Morneau In 69gms & 258ABs at Target Field this yr, Justin hit .252/.329/.399 w/ 7hr 32rbi In 143gms/528ABs career, Morneau's at .273/.356/.411 w/11hr 72rbi....its in his head like Cuddy/Kubel. Others dont have troubles there. RISP this yr... .196/.320/.304 -------RISP w/2 outs .211/.325/.296
  5. agree 100% they are goin back to old way next year already
  6. Heavy majority of people have said to spend every available asset on pitching in the offseason.....you can see where that comes from BUT the hitting was nothing to be impressed with. 2012 rankings BAve 11th @ .260 OBP 10th @ .325 Slgg 21st @ .390 Runs 16th w/701 Im not advocating goin after Josh Hamilton but there are a couple 2nd/3rd tier guys Id love to pursue that could immediately improve the team/bench Eric Chavez-in his glory years he couldnt hit LHP but he has recovered enough to be a dominant hitter again vs RHP. This season in 245ABs vs RHP .298/365/.543 w/ 16hr. He had 50 starts @ 3B & is still solid defensively and can DH/PH & play 1B in an emergency. He only made 900K last yr. Chavez would play right into Trevor's strengths/weaknesses as Plouffe hit .242/.338/.573 in 124ab's vs LHP. Chavez can also fill in defensively later in games. MN always keeps 2 middle infielders & would you rather have Chavez as a part time 3B/PH or Escobar (assuming Carroll is the other). The other guy if BOS OF Cody Ross. The righthanded hitter knocked .295/.373/.636 vs lefties this yr(.284/.353/.575 career). No question we can use him in RF w/Parm if Morneau stays (another part of the offensive problems) but could bounce around the lineup ala Doumit if Justin is dealt. Ross only made 3m this yr also & would jump at a 2yr deal or more. This is a heavy lefthanded lineup, as is, & he would balance it out considerably. Ross also plays all 3 OF spots & rates very well defensively on the corners. Anyone else make any realistic/monetary sense??
  7. one guy I havent seen mentioned either for trade is HOU's Bud Norris. Playing for the majors worst team the past 2 yrs, Norris' numbers are pretty good---60starts 4.19ERA (playin in HOU also) .254BAA 8.7K/9 3.5BB/9.....those numbers would play very well on a good team IMO. Only 28 next season, he's got his 3 arbitration years coming up. As bad as Hou is, they would seem to be a team that would take quanity over high quality right now. Would put him at top of the sleeper list Wash has been mentioned for 2 yrs as a spot for Span/Revere & that will heat up this offseason even if the Nationals win it all IMO. Ross Detwiler will be the main pitcher discussed if they do. He had an excellent year but also fits right in with the Twins as WASH only let him get to 100pitches once all yr If this gets goin, Id love for MN to get Danny Espinosa as either a SS/2B. Michael Morse is also gonna get mentioned this offseason if they acquire a CF as they need to decide between him or Adam LaRoche.
  8. The homerun for MN this offseason is acquiring an ace. Easier said than done as they wont be active in top tier FA. Will Josh Johnson be out there.......possibly. The one guy who IMO will be an ace in the future is TEX LH Derrick Holland. Depending on how disappointed Nolan Ryan is off the last 3 playoff losses, would they deal him? Depends on...... Tex has Yu Darvish/Matt Harrison at top of their rotation but will they get into the Zack Grienke sweepstakes or resign Dempster? With 2 SS's...does Elvis Andrus get dealt (to Ariz for Justin Upton is rumoured) and/or Josh Hamiltion resigned/let go. Holland signed a VERY respectable 5yr 28m deal before the 12 season so I would include anyone outside Sano in a deal for him. He has also been a MUCH better pitcher outside Arlington.(3.49 road ERA in 11/12) They could be looking for a CF like Span, 1B like Morneau, C like Doumit or prospects like Arcia/Hicks/Gibson or Rosario. This would be MY homerun type trade
  9. Like the Hanson idea also or even Mike Minor as Maholm, Hudson & Medlen are solidly entrenched. Thought I liked Masterson till I was reading that CLEV is thinking bout moving him to pen as a RH specialist. ..... but with arbitration due to him (3.83m this yr) , they may need to non-tender him as he'd be a very expensive reliever .............Vs LHH ................vs RHH 2012 .296/.376/.450 ......232/.308/.304 2011 .291/.331/.415.......210/.300/.259 2010 .290/.370/.414.......263/.331/.350 2009 .323/.407/.470.......203/.289/.302
  10. Mentioned above but with Miami also bein horrible.....they do have more starters than they need. Josh Johnson Ricky Nolasco Mark Buehrle Jacob Turner Nate Eovaldi Brad Hand--only 1 MLB start this season--decent AAA yr in hitters friendly PCL 27st 148.1IP 129h 141k 75bb 4.00ERA Top 3 all making over 10m....so its a solid investment with Nolasco/Johnson 1 yr from FA (what TRyan likes). Id offer up a Span for Nolasco/Hand. Nolasco isnt a world beater BUT he stays healthy, makes his starts (last 5 yrs averages 31st/190IP) & throws hard (90mph this yr/90.9 career). He is gonna make 11.5m, so MIA could shed 6m (reason for them to do it) & get a solid CF/leadoff hitter with a good contract as well as retaining a solid foursome in their rotation. I realize Hand is from MN, but he's also a solid prospect who strikes guys out. Think you could do worse than this deal.
  11. always been a Hardy fan & still am but errors by a shortstop can be extrememly overrated as 'official scoring' in baseball is a complete joke.
  12. Texas letting Hamilton go & possibly losing Napoli could easily put them in the market for either Span or Morneau.....but we wouldnt see Profar or Olt. Martin Perez is the best they can hope for pitching wise.....he has been something of a disappointment. Best case tho.....ARIZ deals Upton somewhere else & with adding some pieces, MN gets Elvis Andrus
  13. Gardy is incredibly intimidated by players who were better players than he was. It undermines him. Dont believe me.....who have the Twins had as a coach that had any type of a relevant MLB career?? This is a major reason why Molitor & Gardy didnt mesh well the first time thru. Molly will be the backup plan for manager if Gardy is cut loose next season & gardy wouldnt want him on the staff as the trust factor wouldnt be there between the two.
  14. college/high scouting for the draft is definately NOT my forte.....you guys that do, do a fantastic job.....keep it up
  15. Im all for bringing him back on a decent yearly salary (2m) with a huge incentive base (additional $8). If Scot's healthy & gives ya 33 starts & 200+ innings, Im good for giving him 10m.....that's what we're looking for in FA anyways. Scot's never been able to stay healthy as he's always got at least 1 stint on DL missing a couple starts. Id also include an option yr (or 2) that kicks in (10m??) if he reaches maybe 75% of incentives. I like Scot Baker (when healthy & big IF) better than the majority of any FA pitchers/pitchers that would be available in trades. He was a near All Star last yr & looked to be fullfilling his promise before MN missed his injury. He is a solid 2/3 type starter & that is what MN is missing.
  16. Twins have clinched the AL's worst record with a game to go & will pick 4th in next summer draft!!!!! Will this spot be high enough to get a MLB ready Mark Appel??
  17. I would imagine Pinto's rep's checked around to see if there were any interest in teams that would put him on the 40 man before resigning to a minor league deal. If that happenned, I wouldnt think a team will take him in Rule V when they could've just had him straight up.
  18. As crazy as it sounds, Im a little irritated with Doumit (mainly how he was used so this is a Gardy rip I guess). I know its nitpicking, but.... Doumit was my #1 choice this past offseason to be the backup C to Mauer so I was elated to sign him. However, MN never saw him as a backup player from day 1 & decided he's an everyday player. Fine. They got their wish with Ryan having 134gms & 484ABs. His production of 18HRs 75RBI is pretty solid, but not spectacular. This was his career year. Goin forward, I think MN should shoot higher than that production out of an everyday player/DH. every Sept AB I saw him get in LF reminded me that it should have been Aaron Hicks or Oswaldo Arcia out there. Gardy rants about defense but he continually puts Willy/Doumit/Parm on the corners as in the past with Cuddy/Kubel. Do you want defense or offense out there?? Drew Butera got 30 starts at C this year when Doumit was supposed to be the backup but they wanted to keep him fresh by DHing him in many of those (w/Joe at first or some combination). Just play him at C & forget about the OF or being the fulltime DH.
  19. it was basically started by Gardy's dislike of JJ Hardy
  20. Baker should be 100% by the time spring training starts....not on a rehab schedule, by all accounts from MN/Baker. He wont be on an innings count for the season as a veteran....they dont get the Stasburg type babying. Adam Wainright got right back to 200IP this year and Ive said it numerous times that the last TJ guy MN had in the majors was Liriano & they let him get to 200 IP also. Gibson WILL be on some type of count but it may be 170/180 as they plan to have him get 80 total innings this year combined. Ive gone back & forth on whether to start the year with him or have him spend a month/two in Rochester. If they truly believe he's good for mid May, MN is then counting on one of their starters to flounder by then. This leads me to believe that MN will 'scholarship' Samuel Deduno for the 5th spot & wait for his control to kill him off. Hope not.
  21. Upon his final callup, numbers weren't earthshattering but he held his own fine. 8starts 47IP 49h 23er 4.40ERA 27k 16bb 7HRs (4 in 1 gm tho) If you're of the belief like I am that Scot Baker is just a formality of bein re-signed after they dont pick up their option.....are you happy if you put Baker, Hendriks & Diamond into your rotation for 2013 with 2 spots to fill???
  22. Wonder if they will give him the choice of either Vavra or Andy. Id like to see Andy go if its only one since its him that believes in the low pitch count and thats one of the first things that needs to be changed. Wonder how much better Gardy could manage if his staff isnt entirely made up of of 'his best friends in baseball' but actual coaches.
  23. Robertson is a lock IMO next yr as he has handled lefties very well & Gardy loves those types of southpaws. The only real battle will be for the 7th guy/long man between out of option types of Guerra/Swarzak/Vasquez and possibly Deduno or DeVries.
  24. Shows how Tom Kelly & co. completely screwed up every top prospect they had in the 90s. He was horrendous with younger players & destroyed em. Good thing the eventual early decade Twins revolted on him in 2000 & organization knew it was time to get rid of him....TK had highs & lows, but nobody wants to remember the lows
