  1. They wanted Thorpe to get a start in AA but wanted Stewart to end up there. Moving Stewart down to High A for a day allows Thorpe to make his start and then the two switch places. I assume Stewart will start in Thorpe's place next time through the rotation (he gets an extra day off, never a bad thing for a young arm).
  2. Also, can we say that Adrianza has been a nice scrap heap pickup? A really nice 25th man. Anyone missing Danny Santana?
  3. I mean, the guy you're citing, Slegers, isn't a top 30 prospect and is unlikely to turn into anything amazing. If I told you Slegers is on the 2019 Twins you'd assume he's a middle reliever and you're probably sad that he's made the team. The young Twins would be Jorge, Romero or Gonsalves - those are legitimate prospects. Romero is on an innings limit, Jorge had mixed results and Gonsalves hasn't really done AAA yet. That leaves you with "the old, never was players". What are you gonna do? Starting pitching wasn't a strength and the team is pretty deep in its starting pitching depth - May, Santiago, Mejia, Enns are all injured. No team is great when it hits starting pitchers 10-15. I'm actually impressed that they have guys as good as Sledgers/Melville/Gee/Wheeler/Hurlburt when they hit that far into their depth. Some nice pickups, even if you don't love seeing them start. In my mind, the Twins have given starts to fringe MLBers three times in the last week due to doubleheader/injury mischief. It worked out with Slegers, didn't with Melville and looks okay with Gee thus far (knocks on wood). Going 2-1 in those games would be nice. "Always look on the bright side of life."
  4. Sledgers would have been on short rest. You think he's that good that he's going to pitch well on short rest? Melville on full rest > Sledgers on short rest.
  5. Hindsight is 20/20. I think they made out well trading Garcia. I'm down to trade for someone's 4th or 5th starter but how good is that guy compared to what they have? What does it cost? I don't want to give up significant prospects for a random 4th or 5th starter who is as likely to fall off a cliff and be worse than Gee/Sledgers/Enns as he is to be a solid starter. The first game was always going to be rough. Hopefully they can take this second.
  6. And I just saw that smirk on the replay. God that was hideous.
  7. If you're going to do it against one team, the White Sucks are it. Let's get to that pen!
  8. Nope. Gee, Gibson, Santana and Berrios. It's a five game series. I get not loving Melville but what are they supposed to do? They don't have starting pitching depth and it's seven games in five days. You're going to pull up two guys from AAA. In my mind we were playing with house money the minute we got a nice outing out of Sledgers.
  9. Also, there is no one at this game
  10. Nicer second inning. Hopefully he was just trying too hard that first inning. He did seem to be overthrowing.
  11. That was terrible base running. And then Moby Tim can't take advantage.
  12. What are the odds that Garver's first MLB catching experience comes with Gimenez on the mound?
  13. Without Sano this lineup is really rough against lefties. I get that they may want their best defense out there for Melville but this lineup would be way better if Vargas was DHing and Garver was in LF for Kepler. Hopefully not many more lefties during Sano's DL stint.
  14. This is interesting. Looking ahead, Gonsalves looks to get 4-6 more starts in AAA, depending on rotation structuring and playoffs. So that would put him in the 7-9 range for AAA starts. More would obviously be better but if he pitches well (and maybe gets an MLB start down the stretch?) he'd likely be in the mix for 2018. It'll be interesting to see if he still starts in AAA due to service time considerations.
  15. I'm intrigued by this aspect of it. All of last year, the main line of thought was that the 2015 Twins were a fluke. Hard to blame people for thinking that way. But with 2017 going well (with largely the same group as 2015), do we change our mind? Was 2016 the fluke? Pythagorean only goes so far and the Twins are a team that seems designed to mess with it's efficacy. Strong pitching at the front of the rotation and terrible pitching at the back. An offense that can win high scoring close games but that is also prone to getting shut down by good pitching.
  16. I've been hoping he'd make it to AAA the past month or two but not because he'd be available for the Twins this year. I wanted him to get enough time in AAA that it wouldn't be a barrier to him making the 2018 rotation out of spring training. That said, I trust that minor league promotion is not just about numbers. The Twins likely saw things he needed to work on that were best done at the AA level. Or there was a coach at AA who was clicking with Gonsalves and they wanted to plumb that relationship a little bit more. If he'd stayed til the end of the year, I'd get the angst over how long he was at AA but a few months is within the range where I say "The professionals know more than me". I do wish they'd be more forthcoming with that stuff in general. It can't be a competitive disadvantage to say "We want to see how he does with pickoff moves before we move him up" or "We want him to work on his circle change with _______." It would stop the angst considerably.
  17. I know it's just one game but hopefully this will cool the "The Twins are incompetent because they won't bring up Gonsalves" talk. Gonsalves has a bright future but he's only got a few starts at AAA. His year is next year; the Gees, Melvilles and Sledgers can muddle through this year somehow.
  18. Yeah, Garver should be the other half of the 1B platoon and get some occasional work at DH/LF. I'd like to see Vargas get 10 days with 9 starts. He's killed it in AAA and he's a guy you'd like to get another look at since he'll be out of options next year.
  19. Agreed. And Sonny Gray is a nice pitcher but he's not unbeatable - it's not like getting a Kershaw, Sale or Scherzer in that game.
  20. I don't know how you can not like the current MLB playoff structure. 1) It's the most exclusive in major sports. Over half of basketball teams make it, same with hockey. Football has 12/32, baseball has 10/30. It's hard to make the baseball playoffs, which makes it better. 2) They fixed the wild card issue. It sucked when teams didn't really push hard down the stretch for the division because they had the wild card sewn up and that meant a full series. That winner-take-all game is great and makes it so teams really care about the division title. 3) I love that having the best record in your league gives you a sizable advantage. You get to face a team that just played a game where they likely started their best pitcher - they're all out of whack and you get to be rested and ready to go. There should be an advantage to finishing first. Baseball's playoffs are great as is now. The wild card is fun but is truly a wild card and there's a clear advantage to finishing first. They should not change it at all.
  21. It'll be interesting to see if Vargas or Granite gets most of the DH time (assuming that Escobar will be at 3b). I'd like to see Vargas get another shot and go on a run.
  22. Niko Goodrum is having a fine season at 25 in AAA but he's only putting up a .750 OPS. In AAA. He profiles as the utility man of the future but the Twins aren't hurting there. Adrianza's got a .710 OPS in the majors this year and is a much better fielder. No way I'm dumping Adrianza for him. Offseason might be a different question. It's not sexy but the Twins will have interesting choices with Escobar and Adrianza (and of course this will be directly tied into Dozier).
  23. I don't think dozier is going to be cheap and I'm if the mindset that 1b is a place where it's easy to save money. Whether it's a post contract Mauer or other pieces from baseballs scrap heap, I like using 1b as a place to put young guys and low cost free agents. I also think we're ignoring the key question of whether dozier wants to play 1b. He will receive offers based on him playing second -- lots of guys don't want to play a new position. Or if he is fine with it, he may be more interested in a transition to 3b or a corner outfield spot. Seems unlikely to me. The twins should really be looking to move dozier this offseason, especially if he ends strong and gets to the 30-35 hr range. There wasn't much of a 2b market this offseason but this offseason there may be more teams looking. he's less valuable than a year ago but the twins could still get some nice prospects if someone looks around and wants a 1 year solution
