  1. How about getting rid of an Adrianza and using an Escobar/Polanco? And getting rid of a Robbie Grossman and using a Joe Mauer? Getting rid of a Ryan LaMarre and using a Byron Buxton? The Twins have been banged up. Health would be a big step.
  2. That's a good call. If Sano or Morrison is DHing you worry but with Mauer back that won't happen. It does mean a lot of Escobar at SS but you live with that for the bat.
  3. Yeah Buxton back means Cave and LaMarre both go down (unless Cave really hits and forces you to keep him up and platoon with Buxton) and you get that 13th pitcher. To my mind: Polanco = Petit down Mauer = LaMarre down Buxton = Cave down Kind of tricky since Mauer seems likely to be first back and Buxton might be third.
  4. This offseason I was arguing that the Twins should look to move Escobar. They had Dozier and Polanco with Gordon, Javier, Lewis and Arraez coming up. He was superfluous and about to get expensive. Man was I wrong. The Twins missed an opportunity when they didn't sign him this offseason. They probably could've gotten him on a 3 year, $15 million deal. Now they may be paying $15 million for a single year. Oh well, hard to predict this explosion but what a missed opportunity.
  5. I think a better idea would be to drop Petit. It leaves you a little thin in the middle infield and in danger of losing the DH/needing to play Rosario at 2B in an emergency but Petit isn't playing and is 20 games from being superfluous when Polanco comes back.
  6. Really good to see all the Dozier hate. That means he's about to bust out in a big way. Strangely, I predict no one will be commenting "I really thought we should bench him for Gordon, my bad".
  7. Great work, how many catchers move to SS and are known for their glove? Disclaimer: I understand that I'm about to comment on a life that is not my own and choices that are not my own. But . . . A little taken aback by Hocking talking about missing so much of his kids' life. He made $5 million as a pro and is eminently qualified to be a high school or traveling baseball coach in his local area. He presumably missed a lot of their childhood when he was playing. I guess I just really don't get being so absent when you have no financial reason to be. Is being a minor league hitting instructor or coach so much more validating than coaching high school? Does he have a shot to manage in the big leagues? Again, I get its not my life but I really wouldn't make the same choices and have a hard time wrapping my head around why someone would. Not seeing your daughter play in the World Cup would be a deal-breaking moment for me.
  8. Were you there? Did you understand the context of the comment? Did you hear the question before it, the one that sets the context for this question? Seems pretty disingenuous to assume that one quote from one article paints a picture of an entire interview. Or that Joe Mauer is a rogue Twin who refuses to lift leg weights in spite of the impassioned pleas of the training staff. The reason I know that Joe Mauer lifts leg weights is that I've watched him do leg presses. I used to coach at CDH and was in the gym when he came in and worked out with a few of his high school buddies during off hours. It wasn't a serious workout (goofing off/competition) but they were doing leg presses and benches and everything. I studied and taught history. Whenever someone attaches ultimate importance to one quote or one statement, they usually have an axe to grind.
  9. You're right that "the media' is a bit of a broad overstatement. Many media members are calm and rational in talking about Joe the player. But I think it'd be hard to deny that mouthpieces like Souhan have been getting their soundbites off at Joe's expense for years. There's a glee that comes to slamming him and calling him a wuss while ignoring the bigger picture. It's the same thing you often see when they talk about Sano's weight. And I think that unfortunately, a few of them can drive a concept of a player just by bringing the concepts that he's a liar or spoiled or lazy or faking it into the conversation. They have a soap box and what they say steers the dialogue. Interesting point about Mauer not talking to the media. In some ways, being Joe works against him. He's not a guy like David Price who can refuse to talk to people - he's way too nice for that. I think it would actively pain him to ignore someone like that. So he gets stuck in that "Oh shucks, I gotta say something. Wish I didn't have to." zone.
  10. I'm eternally bothered by MLB scoring on plays like Navarez getting thrown out at 2B in the 7th. He was clearly safe at 2B and then came off the bag. To me, that's a double, not a single. If he ran around 2B and then tried to make it back and got tagged, it'd be a double but because he overslid, it's a single?
  11. To not lift weights during the season. The offseason is a different matter. I'm also certain that Joe Mauer is not making his own training decisions, he's doing what the Twins training staff tells him to do. You can put quotes around weird thing to minimize it but they're both relatively freak accidents that are difficult to decipher. In both cases, Joe gets blamed by an impatient media and fan base that feel entitled to complain because "he's got a big contract" when its the medical staff that doesn't have a clear concept of what's going on. And that doesn't mean I think we should blame doctors - we should just realize that with concussions, doctors are pretty much in the dark as to how an individual one will progress. With his leg issue, doctors had a difficult time diagnosing what was going on. Joe's not a doctor, reading into the quotes of a guy who doesn't like talking to the media but is forced to talk to an increasingly bitter and hostile one seems like a pretty pointless activity.
  12. I'm curious what your overall view is. Joe Mauer lies about his health? Joe Mauer is not on the same page as his doctors? Joe Mauer is making up or babying health issues? I think concussions are super confusing and hard to diagnose. I think the same thing is true of a lot of other medical aspects - doctors misdiagnose things or can't give you something precise. I don't get your catching bullpens issue. He seems to say that he doesn't do leg workouts because catching bullpens works out his legs. That seems pretty reasonable to me. I tried catching when I was 75 pounds and it was really hard on legs, I can't imagine how crazy it would be on the pro level.
  13. Woah chill. Just a harmless joke at the expense of a former twin, not a personal attack on you. Take it easy. Ben Revere had one year with an OPS+ above 100 and that was 103.That's tough for a noodle-armed OF who is best in LF as a result. I think Ben Revere would be exhibit 1 for people putting a bit too much emphasis on .300 (and batting average).
  14. June 7th. Only 5 games out. June 7th. This team is not just Escobar and Rosario. Dozier, Sano, and Buxton are eminently capable of an extended nuclear explosion. Mauer and Polanco will be back relatively soon. Morrison and Grossman seem to be getting over their funks. We can hope for a bit of help for Garver. Sano still has all the potential in the world!
  15. It's a risk reward thing. Let's say the Twins offer him a 6 year $72 million contract. He's got to think about it right? And $12 million sounds like a lot (you can change it to $15 or $10 if you think that's more reasonable) but the Twins have minimal salary commitments and that number isn't crazy for a good defensive CF who has a .650 OPS (seems pretty doable with BABIP going up). And there's the potential for getting an all-star. Buxton is exactly the guy I'm going to for an extension. You're going to get a deal and the reward is huge.
  16. http://www.thesportsbank.net/core/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/prince-fielder-kid.jpg Pretty sure Prince Fielder was always pretty hefty. His dad thickened up pretty quick too. I don't see how weight has anything to do with hitting. I'd get it if Sano was terrible at 3B or was hitting balls off the wall and getting thrown out at 2B. But it's just hitting. Weight shouldn't matter.
  17. True. Or the Twins are smart and offer him a big extension this offseason. And you get those age 28-21 years on the cheap.
  18. Do you think that Miguel Sano's performance in the field has slipped? I've seen nothing like that. He's the same marginal baserunner he always was. For hitting, weight doesn't matter (to a point obviously, a 500 pound guy would struggle). You think Fielder would have hit 65 homeruns if he'd been 50 pounds lighter? Is there any aspect of Sano's swing that you think is weight related? I can see saying that the career might be shorter due to weight on knees. That's not something we're worried about with Sano now. This is about performance at 25. Weight has nothing to do with it.
  19. Nope. Cecil Fielder. Prince Fielder. David Wells. Big Papi. Bartolo Colon. CC Sabathia. Baseball is not like other sports. Many positions involve little prolonged running. You can either hit a ball or you can't. Michael Jordan struggled in AA. Lebron James would too. It's an entirely different beast. If you're going to say that Sano's performance is based on health, then you need to prove it. It's not on me to disprove it - I'm pointing to the many successful fatties in MLB.
  20. A month ago the Dodgers were one of the two or three worst teams in baseball. Now most people expect them to win their division. I repeat. We must chill. Also, there's not that much to sell. Dozier is underperforming, Mauer is hurt and the franchise, Santana is hurt, Lynn has to rebuild value, the pen is mostly under control for next year or is not something that gets great value. No reason to sell. We must chill.
  21. All players naturally lose their speed and defensive coverage; Father Time is undefeated. I think the concept is that Buxton will continue to develop other skills as he gets older. He is 24. He is in no way a finished product. He won’t have the range in three years but he’ll take better routes. He won’t have the raw basestealing speed but he’ll be better at reading pitchers. Randy Moss has nothing to do with Byron Buxton. Sometimes an analogy springs to mind but then it should be suppressed. This is one of those. Ragging on Sano for weight is tired schtick.
  22. This is pretty outrageously negative, even for TD message boards. Buxton is 24 years old. 24. He may have had 1074 PA at the MLB level but he still has time to develop. He has raked at every level of the minors (and the majors for two months last year) and it hasn't been because he's got a lot of infield hits. He's in no way who he will be at this point in time. Suggesting it seems willfully focused on raining on an already dismal parade. Let's take a big deep breath and let this thing play out. Buxton will be better than this, we just need to wait.
  23. I think there are two big things with Sano. 1.) His strikeout rate has jumped to the "oh crap" levels. That's hopefully a matter of comfort or adjustment but that's the part to be worried about. 2.) His BABIP is phenomenally low. Maybe he's making worse contact but I haven't seen that. I expect that will normalize as the sample gets larger.
  24. I can't give you anything from Buxton but I can say that the guy is 24. There are lots of athletes who struggled with injuries early in their career before figuring it out. Steph Curry jumps to mind. Some of that is their body getting stronger as they fully mature. Some of it is figuring out how to take care of their body to maintain a consistently high performance. A guy being injury-prone early doesn't mean he always will be.
