  1. I'm talking about the WS.
  2. How so? Epstein was hired by the Cubs in 2011, the same year Ryan came back on the scene with the Twins after losing 99 games. They're also only separated by about 10 million in payroll.
  3. Yes, obviously, I mean how could anyone continue questioning it now?
  4. Like in Cuba? North Korea? Iran? South Africa? You don't seem to understand Russian history all that well, or the complexities of their economy and social structure. I don't overestimate Putin's influence, if anything, I may be understating it. Using economics instead of diplomacy will have the opposite effect, it will galvanise the support for Putin further, his popularity soared after the annexation of Crimea and the incursion into Ukraine, even in the face of sanctions. Sanctions have never worked in Russia and they won't work now, imo they're being used by the Obama administration as a tool to show the public they are doing something. It's apparently working. Want to eat and have some stuff? Wounded national pride? Not even close.
  5. Oops, had the mute button on.
  6. Torre...ok.....the rest, barf!
  7. Cub fans haven't had anything to celebrate in any of their lifetimes. Literally no living person last saw the Cubs win. How is that they're still really annoying?
  8. Interesting, no doubt Toronto is a hockey town but the World Series bar story seems rather anecdotal. It doesn't seem to add up, they've averaged almost 900,000 viewers since the trade deadline and have topped 2 million a number if times. Those are gaudy numbers no matter who you are. The '92 and '93 teams averaged over 3.5 million viewers in Canada for the WS, most of which were in Ontario. Those two WS also rank in the top 5 highest rated and largest share championship series of the last 25 years. Number 1?.....the '91 Twins-Braves series. Toronto might not be the baseball market that NY, Boston or LA is, but it is a huge market, and one that loves a winner
  9. I'm cool with Cotts staying another year. Duensing on the other hand............
  10. Yeah, so this Arrieta guy is pretty good eh?
  11. In what context? As a baseball market? Toronto would represent the 3rd largest market on the US, it is a huge media market. Also, it's unique in that you have to include the rest of Canada when considering the Jays (present company excluded) or the Raptors. Maybe I'm misunderstanding you, but it seems to me Toronto is a pretty major media centre.
  12. You underestimate Putin's influence on the people, as well as how they view their country compared to how it used to be. Russians don't blame Putin for the economic trouble in the country, they blame the West, specifically the US. There is a growing sentiment in Russia to restore it to the days of the Soviet Union, however misguided that might be. Perception is everything. Sanctions didn't work in the past and they won't work now. Besides, the price of oil has more to do with the instability of the Russian economy anyway.
  13. I don't know if most Westerners really understand how Russians view things at all. These aren't choices for them, they are necessary moves to ensure their long term security. How would Americans view it's government if they ceded to Russia's actions in Ukraine or simply allowed them to do whatever they chose in Syria without any objection or interference? I think it would be viewed with a certain sense of insecurity that a growing Russian presence could potentially be a threat. Russia is not going to capitulate, it goes against everything they are trying to accomplish.
  14. I don't really think the motivation and benefits are in question for Putin, the potential risk if he's unable to keep Assad in power could have considerable consequences for him though. My guess is that he feels the benefits outweigh the risks, especially as it pertains to keeping the US from pursuing further action.
  15. Love the booing, oh Yankee fans, never change.
  16. What, no " Mauer has a hangnail or stubbed his toe, so he'll be out until June" cracks? I'm proud of you all.
  17. True, there is an explicit bias with them being the only team in the country. It would be the same thing if Canada had 4 or 5 teams though, with all the national broadcasting emanating from Toronto, that's all you hear about, it's a virtual nightly love in. The Expos were definitely the red headed step child when they were in Montreal. I think that's why I always preferred them to the Jays, well, that and they were a National League team that didn't interfere with my rooting interest in the Twins.
  18. I can't envision many scenarios for Trevor Plouffe being with the Twins next season, I think he, along with a B or C level prospect, represent the best chips for acquiring a catcher in the off season. I don't know how high Plouffe's value is, my guess would not be overly high, but I'm pretty confident it's not going to get any higher.
  19. A-Roid put his best playoff swing on that pitch.
  20. Couldn't the announcing crew even pretend a little bit that they aren't rooting for the Yankees? This is what it's like watching the Jays in Canada.
  21. I really don't think Putin's m.o, is caring whether he pisses people off, especially ones who really aren't going to do much about it. From a geopolitical perspective it makes perfect sense for Putin to maintain his ties with Syria and remain strong in the region, especially if he wants to further Russia's influence there, which he does. He also has no interest in the US extending it's reach across the globe, just like he didn't in Ukraine. Putin has been determined for years to restore Russia's strength globally and provide a counter balance to the US. The Middle East is just another area that presents those opportunities.
  22. Whoops, you're right. I imagine this is what Putin is probably doing now.
  23. Laughable, in fact that was probably Putin's reaction. He's as concerned about sanctions as he was when they threatened the same thing over Ukraine. He doesn't fear sanctions, or NATO,or all of Europe for that matter.
  24. There is no doubt that Putin's end goal is to reinforce his firm stronghold in that part of the Middle East and maintain his country's interests that come from that region. Of course propping up Assad is his main priority, but the presence of ISIS disrupts that considerably, it also is representing an increasing problem for him in the Caucuses. It's not Islamic extremism he's concerned about, ISIS is just another destabilizing threat he needs to worry about in trying to control the region. The migration crisis is not good for Russia either.
  25. Excuses for what? Building a foundation of continued success for years? This program is miles ahead of where Brewster left it and is also on more solid footing than during Mason's years imo (and that's just recent history). The biggest reason? Defense. I'd much rather have the program where it is today than where it ever was with Brewster and where is was after the 2006 debacle to Texas Tech under Mason. But that's just on the field stuff, the off field stuff is where this program has really changed. They won't win the West this year, especially with a crossover game against OSU, you know, the #1 ranked team in the country OSU. But I wouldn't bet against them next year.
