  1. Jeremy Pena is the shortstop worth pursuing but it would cost a pile of players. I would have those conversations for Pena.
  2. I understand you want a World Series trophy. People buy lottery tickets because they want to win the big money. Getting into the playoffs is the start. No team has ever been guaranteed to win a World Series. The Mets loaded up and crashed. The Dodgers load up but also have a minor league system that delivers Andy Pages, Sheehan, and others. The Twins have struggled to develop players but there is some improvement. The team this year is clearly outpacing the 72 win projection. The front office has stated they are trying to add players. It is difficult to do so. I would trade my fishing boat for your John Deere riding lawn mower but you might not want my beauty. So I happen to believe the Twins could make a splash (major trade) but it seems more likely they make a few small deals because of some restrictions. That is why I asked out of curiosity what reasonable package of players would bring back Mason Miller. The comment boards often include great frustration by a few folks who find the slow processes in baseball to be untenable. Most of these people would identify themsleves as more interested in football. It is understandable how a football fan gets irritated by baseball I have relatives who fall into that category. That is not a bad thing but it makes enjoying a baseball game more difficult, especially the tough losses. If you are a baseball fan you have to endure a long season and decades of watching other teams win the World Series. Dodger fans were all too familiar with that until just a couple of years ago. I'm choosing to see something positive in the Twins season despite my frustrations of wanting more, including a trade for a someone .... like Mason Miller.
  3. beano fella, I think you outed yourself one too many times as far as not having a clue about minor league players. Clearly, obviously, you have not watched Brandon Winokur play baseball. There really isn't anyone else in the system that has louder tools except for the hit one. Winokur is doing much better this season. Winokur is a better shortstop than Kreidler but not as good as Houston. We simply do not know what Winokur can become at the plate, but compare Aaron Judge at 22 with Winokur at 21 if you wish. Judge had better numbers at A and A+ ball. Winokur is doing fine at A+/AA. Purchase an MLB account and watch some minor league baseball. I understand many people on this site cannot due to time constraints and I could not either until the last few years. I also understand that many are more football fans. But making comments on players you have no knowledge of whatsoever just doesn't work. There have been a few people who have suggested using Winokur in a trade. I have no idea how the Twins feel about that but my belief based on watching the big athlete make adjustments in his first few years of professional baseball is that letting Winokur go would be a big mistake ... potentially much bigger than trading Culpepper or Houston who I like quite a bit.
  4. What players would San Diego receive from Minnesota to accept moving Morejon and Miller? Be realistic.
  5. Is Greene healthy? Why has he stumbled this year?
  6. This is another good opportunity for Jack Anderson. This is how guys emerge from the morass that is the relief pitching shuttle. Good luck to Jack.
  7. There are players to hold and some that can be moved. I'm keeping Jenkin, K. Culpepper, Houston, Rojas, Quick, Diaw, Ellwanger Winokur, and Mercedes from the current MLB prospect list. That does not include Lackey, who stays. I'm also keeping Abel, Bradley, Gomez, Lopez, Morris, Prielipp, Rojas, and Buxton from the 40 person roster. There are many others Iwill only trade if the offer is right. Some will not be traded because the Twins are committed to them. Transactions are possible but I'm not expecting much. Of course last trade deadline was a doozy so one never knows. The one surprise would be if the Twins still rostered three catchers on August 4. Big series begins tonight with the Kansas City Royals. Go Twins.
  8. My take is irrational. The Twins will need a couple of AAA guys to step into the lineup and play reasonably well. I'm also still not giving up on Prielipp and Rojas, despite common thoughts that they will be shut down due to innings limits. Plenty has gone wrong with the Twins in recent seasons and it is time for some lucky bounces. I would make trades though and the goal would be simply to add talent. If moving some prospects is necessary to make the pieces fit, I'm ok with that. Talent plays. The differences between teams is pretty slim at this time, so just about anything can happen. As always the pitching will lead the way. Hopefully that way is up.
  9. Criticisms of Ryan Kreidler as a hitter are totally fair and Kreidler is not prime time Andrelton Simmons in the field. Ryan Kreidler is, however, a decent shortstop and the only currently rostered player who can adequately play that important position. The other options are poor. No, Matt Wallner is not a shortstop or an outfielder. Perhaps by mid August Kaelen Culpepper takes the steps needed to be called up but that is about it. Until another player arrives who can turn outs into outs and not watch those outs become base hits, Ryan Kreidler needs to be the shortstop.
  10. This a fair post. Major league ballplayers are good but there is a definitive difference between an above average fielding guy to one who is below average. I try to take the approach that all of these guys work very hard to be the best that they can be. Talent varies quite a bit though. Larnach is improved but still a below average outfielder. As long as he hits there will be a place for him. Larnach might be best as a DH but does just enough to play in the field. Wallner is several steps below Larnach on the defensive spectrum. His only position is DH. Both players can be traded, although I do appreciate that Larnach has been a good bat this year.
  11. Ok, ok - I'm now convinced. The Twins will trade Jeffers, Larnach, and Wallner for Volpe, Doval, Lagrange, and Rodriguez. Done.
  12. It is always fun when a national guy writes about the Yankeees trading for someone. So Jeffers is a rental and the writer suggests Volpe and Doval for him. Well, Luis Arraez is a rental as well. Why don't the Twins offer the Giants Matt Wallner and Cole Sands for Arraez. Surely that idea would fly better than the NYY suggested offer for Jeffers.
  13. FWIW, Winokur made a few swing adjustments. Some times he still wants to crank one but he has adherred more closely to the changes in the last month. The guy is and always has been an outlier, speed, good baserunner, scary power, big arm that is very accurate, and well above average defense pretty much anywhere. The hit tool is going to be his ticket. Right now Winokur is going well. I'm sure a ton of teams are asking about him.
  14. Personally, I prefer Caratini as my catcher. However, Jeffers is easily he better bat and He also provides a fair amount of power. Jeffers has improved as a hitter and is a tough opponent for pitchers. My guess is that Jeffers has more value, even if he will be a free agent after two more months.
  15. If the Twins receive a fair offer, Jeffers is gone. Jeffers and the players know that. There is no reason to trade Jeffers unless a team pays the high price. It won't hurt the organization to not get anything at all when Jeffers signs with another team. While I would like to see Jeffers remain a Twins, he will be a free agent after the season. I see this as a win-win. Keep him for two months or receive a good player in a transaction.
  16. Easy to agree that any one (or even two) of the players mentioned are worth acquiring in the next week. The question or only hangup is with the player going the other direction.
  17. Agree that the Tampa Bay Rays may be a good trade partner. The targets are Brody Hopkins, Michael Forret, Ty Johnson, and Tre' Morgan as a throw in. Can the Twins find a better deal elsewhere for Jeffers and Larnach. Also, remember that Wallner is a DH only. Bell and Buxton have that nailed down for now.
  18. The vibe has changed in Wichita .... at least for now. Leading the charge are Houston, Diaw, Kendle, and Winokur. Each of these players have made some adjustments to find success at AA baseball. Houston and Winokur look like their work has paid off; fun to watch.
  19. If one of New York (Yankees), Tampa Bay, Boston, Chicago (White Sox), San Diego, Seattle, or another team decide that Ryan Jeffers has the value needed for their team to make their season turn in the manner they desire, a worthwhile offer will be put forth and Ryan Jeffers will be traded. Otherwise, Jeffers stays and the Twins receive nothing.
  20. Morris, Prielipp, and Rojas have all been called up because they have good stuff and can get MLB hitters out. All of them were expected to make an appearance in late August or September this season but events required their apprenticeships at AAA to be cut short. All three will be handled carefully throughout the remainder of the year. While I do believe Prielipp may be stretched back to 90-100 pitches, it is unlikely that Rojas is stretched out to that territory until next season. The need for innings behind both Rojas and Prielipp will depend on how often and successfully the Twins can receive two innings from their relievers. The loss of Paredes was a difficult bad loss. Hopefully he is back and pitching effectively by mid August.
  21. We can only guess ..... I think Jeffers gets traded on August 3. Then again, maybe the Twins win the next six games and hold Jeffers.
  22. Clearly the Twins had a 70 pitch count on Prielipp. The big lead and a rested Sands made sense in the moment. The problem was strictly on Sands inability to execute his pitches. Rojas and Prielipp both looked sharp but they are understandable pitch count limits. The goal is to win games and series. Check versus the Athletics. Now it is time to win the series against a gritty Kansas City club. This Twins team is playing a neighborhood that was unexpected in late March.
  23. The three doubles today were sweet reward for the numerous hard ground ball outs. I could be way off on this but it does seem like Kreidler is swinging and missing less than previously. There is a no brain positive to his defense at shortstop. Ryan is steady and plays smart, whether that is backing up players or stopping balls that are sure singles from becoming scoring base hits. Kreidler is not a gold glove shortstop but he is so much better than the other options that the pitchers are paying for every dinner for him.
