  1. The k's continue. But even with the wildness of Soto, Kepler swings at the 1st pitch and hits an easy grounder to end it. Just like that. I don't think these guys have a clue anymore on how to score runs consistently...when they need them. What did they leave on base today? 16? Just plain ugly.
  2. Twins deserve every bit of this mess. They might want to note how many runs scored with 2 outs...on singles....not roundhouse swings for the fences. Once again, the pen fails bigtime. I'm wondering, have the Twins come back late to win any game they have trailed past the 7th inning? Detroit is having fun at the Twins expense.
  3. there is a total sameness to just about every game this year. Our starter only goes 5 maybe 6.Our pen is routinely giving up the winning runs late. Our hitters just cannot drive in runs. And they all strike out way too much. For some reason, once we see a runner at 2nd....instead of trying to cash him in with a base hit, they all swing for the fences. We already have left 12 on base today against the worst team in baseball. Why Cave is still playing beats me? He out-Sano's Sano with his terrible AB's. There is no reason why this game is tied. Twins just can't get the key hits Oh check that. Duffey in with the late inning gascan and suddenly its 3-2 Detroit. Wash, rinse, repeat...no matter who the Twins bring in, in a close game...they fail. Hard to come up with different words to describe this season so far.
  4. I keep thinking about Buxton. Can there actually be a ballplayer this good and this fragile that you worry every single game that he will go down? The young man plays his behind off every night...but he does damage to himself on a weekly basis. So, can the Twins afford to extend a guy who 'might' be able to give them 90-100 games? Games that when he plays are eye-popping? Will he ever be able to get healthy enough to play hard and not get hurt? (I seriously doubt that...it is no longer a small sample size) Is any of this fair? No
  5. for the unwashed masses like me....what is wRC+ and why do we need it?
  6. Some things just keep repeating and repeating: Twins bullpen blows another save Twins bullpen loses its 7th extra inning game Byron Buxton is injured Miggy Sano strikes out again,,,and again Twins hitters can't hit with RISP and finally... KKKKKKKKKKKKKKK Thats all this team does now....strike out, strike out and strike out some more. Double digits just about every night. While the pen is just awful, just about every game, the hitters have become the equally as lousy culprits. All of them. Donaldson suddenly is as lost as all the rest of the them. His stats over the past couple weeks are putrid. And of course, its always nice when you are 0-6 in extra innings to start out with a wild pitch. Twins have scored in only 1 of the 7 games...with a runner at 2nd and no outs. thats almost not possible. Its no longer early. All the analytics in your computers can't change 11-19 (6-17 over the last 23) The team is broken...just about every aspect. Unless they are ahead by 10 with 2 innings to go, no win is a lock with these guys. Sad
  7. when SAno is not your worst hitter, you know there are big problems in Twinsland. And its spelled: kkkkkkkkkkkkkkk Pitching was OK tonite. Hitting once again miserable. How can this lineup be so impotent?
  8. Kepler looking more and more like Cave at the plate every day now. Did someone tell these guys they aren't obligated to strike out so much??
  9. but while we are busy trashing the pitchers, how about that sacks juiced, no outs, and no runs! Our offense is so inconsistent. When the game is close, our hitters disappear like Brigadoon. Then the pen finishes us off. I watched Means destroy Seattle this afternoon. Faced 27 hitters and got them all...unfortunately one of his k's resulted in a wild pitch...and the runner was immediately out stealing...but that killed the perfect game. Still it was such a pleasure watching a pitcher totally dominate like he did from start to finish. I wonder if the Twins will ever see a starter go 7 innings anymore this year?
  10. The 9th and 10th inning numbers defy description. They also take a decent 2 3/4 hour game and turn it into a 3 1/2 hour game..complete with the associated ugliness. I don't understand the 'Rogers is unlucky' thing. They have hit some very hard shots against him and there is no defense for the ball clearing the wall. Stretching out the starters might be an option, but probably not a very effective one. Take Berrios..when he goes bad, its a landslide of bad...usually resulting in a dugout full of runs with no outs, to the point where he has to come out. Would be nice to get 7 innings from our starters at least 3/5 of the time. The craziness is our best start was opening day when Berrios came out after 7 innings of no-hit ball. Wonder how it would have played out had they let him stay? i would never consider trading Buxton for relief pitchers. he is Mr Excitement and one of the only reasons to watch the Twins so far. Start working now on a way to keep him (assuming he can play a full season) Donaldson, for me, has been just slightly OK so far. His offense has not been all that stellar, for what we got him for. His 'd' can be spectacular but he'll make routine mistakes too. The offense has to take some lumps. When the opposition scores 28 runs in the 9th and 10th and you counter with 3...no need to continue that sentence. Yep--the pen is a hot mess and as we have seen, not an easy fix.
  11. It may have been said already, the starters aren't going deep enough in games too. That puts the strain on the pen every night. When the pen is not good (like the one we have), its not surprising that they are 0-6 in extra innings...giving up runs in the 10th every time, no matter who they parade out there. Rogers given two chances to come in and shut the other guys down. He escaped the first time despite allowing 2 runs (unacceptable) but not last night. The hitters aren't helping in these lower scoring close games. And then our sure handed 3B boots one at the worst time. Poor Cave...he's hopeless. The Turtle? He hits a HR earlier, but then does what he often does...grounds into a routine DP to end the game. Why didn't Kirilloff play ? 3 lopsided wins can't overcome all these major issues facing the team so far.
  12. Twins will never contend with this bullpen. They are horrible. Duffey, rogers...can't close the door. Compound it by sure handed Donaldson booting a grounder. Then they put in the kid, who throws batting practice for the 2nd time in 2 tries. Rocco emerges from the dugout to a loud chorus of well deserved boos. The pitching staff is a mess. But most of it is the pen where nobody is effective. Twins I believe have given up runs in the 10th inning of all 6 extra inning losses. Awful
  13. Rogers is awful. Still. And so is most the pen. Yeah, a win, but how many times will we have a 'closer' get a 3 run lead in the 9th and still make it a nail biter? Kirilloff over Sano? Wouldn't make me sad at all. Until Kirilloff goes into a major slump at the plate, you ride that horse every game. I believe Sano is expendable...maybe Twins could get an arm to two for him? Sano fans say its just about time for him to go on a tear. And that could be true, except throughout his career, the 'tears' don't last long. But thats why I'm not the GM. Only a fan! Right now though, the pen is the major headache. Nearly no one is doing the job, when it matters. 5-0 lead late and a final score of 6-5 just won't do, if this team is to compete.
  14. If Buxton stays healthy and has an MVP season, which is quite possible, and the Twins let him walk, the Twins fans will assemble in front of the stadium with pitchforks and torches. A healthy Buxton just might be the most exciting baseball player in the business today.
  15. Kirilloff may present the Twins with some food for thought. While he also strikes out a lot, could he be the new regular 1B..relegating Sano to spot starting or even to being traded? Will be interesting to see what develops over the next couple of weeks. I feel the Twins will be starting Kirilloff everyday to see what he's got. He just might make Sano a spare part. I suppose its a nice problem to have. I'd like to see Donaldson produce more runs, but not complaining. Is Garver finally putting it together? Time will tell. Agree on the assessment of Barrios. This has been his issue throughout his career...even down in Rochester, it was the same thing. He's lights out for several innings but then completely loses it. (remember when he had to be taken out after 4 2/3 innings when the Twins were up something like 14-0 and he just couldn't get the outs needed to get the easy win)
  16. Nice win today. If buxton could only stay healthy, there is no telling what kind of season he would have. He is so dialed in this year, it is description defying. This guy was not supposed to be a HR hitter...maybe 10 or so...but his power swing is a thing of beauty. Good to see Donalson snap his slump...ditto Garver. The turtle contributed. Many here can't stand him, but its a darned good thing the Twins kept him around. Sano might snap out of his slump, but in the meantime Turtle is not hurting the team,. 7 more good innings from Happ. Taking up some slack for Maeda's trainwreck season so far. The test will be can they string a few W's together.
  17. Colome's confidence at the moment is shot. Yesterday was a classic example. He goes in trying to keep it a one run game and walks 3 men and hits another, forcing in a run and leaving a mess for another reliever to clean up (unsuccessfully) When you cant go in and throw strikes...when your outings so far this year have been brutal...much of the trouble is mental. Its possible that he has just completely 'lost it', but that is unlikely. whatever the case, he is a major headache for the Twins right now.
  18. couldn't agree more with the above. Some of the useless drivel that is being wheeled out is just plain unnecessary.this isn't Strat-o-matic. Its what happens when major league hitters face major league pitchers and fielders. Some of the easiest DP's in the game are hard hit, on the button ground balls. You can hit a ball 400 feet, real hard, and if its to center field, its usually an out. Object of game...score more runs than the other guy and win. And it can happen in a various number of ways. I don't care about 'hard hit' and exit velocity and launch angle and e-i--e-i-o m-o-u-s-e. But thats just one mans opinion. Others count too, I get it.
  19. the distinguished panel seems to be mixed on: our biggest problem (bullpen or offense);; and can they turn this thing around. Extra inning losses: both the pen and the offense equally to blame...if you can't figure out how to bring a runner from 2nd home 4 of 5 times, while allowing runners to score 5 out of 5 times...you share equal responsibility. For the most part. Teams have come back from lousy starts. I suspect though that once a team gets to around 10 under .500, it rarely happens. It does sometimes, but not often enough to feel real confident. Its very difficult to get back to .500 when you are 10 under. And you got to be 10 under, because fundamentally your team had some major problems. So, lets not wait too long to rev up the motor.
  20. shows how misleading some stats can be. 65% of the Twins games they have scored 3 or fewer...so to lean on an average of 4.25 runs per game is disingenuous. Take out the 12 they scored, in a loss BTW, and the numbers will be different overall. The pen is a huge problem, but the offense is huge problem 1-A. The inability to put bat on ball and produce runs has been pretty sad. it has been so long, I have totally forgotten they scored 15. (did they really?..yeah thats right, they gave up a bunch of meaningless runs in the 9th...harbinger of things to come?)
  21. The extra inning games tell the tale. 5 losses...and no pitcher has been able to keep the opponent from scoring right away. Meanwhile (save Buxton's HR) Twins hitters can't figure out how to get a runner in from 2nd with no outs! The extra inning rule is a gimmick, but it applies to both teams...and Twins haven't caught on yet how it works. Buxton is our best player...maybe one of the top 5 players in MLB, but my goodness, its now every week we hold our breaths to see if he can manage to not get injured. That will never do. As for Colome ....didn't we learn our lesson with Romo last year? Bad is bad. For me, the good news today was the O's win over the Yanks. The umps helped out greatly (unusual for calls to go against the Yankees!); some poor baserunning by NY; and they were beaten by team with more hitters under .200 than one could possibly believe...well maybe Twins can relate....
  22. A's started 1-7 and then reeled off 14 wins. Bucs wre 1-6 and now they are .500. Twins started 5-2 and have disappeared, losing 11 of 13. Bucs success...the bullpen stepped up. A's success...everyone stepped up. Twins failure? Just about everyone has stepped down. Starting pitching has been good. 'D; not good except for buxton; bullpen terrible; offense awful. Today Garver and Cave accounted for 6 k's in their 7 AB's. The team is a mess right now. Can they do what the A's and Buc's have done? Perhaps. But the numbers keep getting uglier and uglier. This is the worst funk the Twins have endured in several seasons.
  23. I find all these stats with all the initials and plus and minus signs which turn the game into an antiseptic exercise quite aggravating. Exit velocity, angles, squaring away barreling up,,and various other things that have been dreamt up ..are they really making the enjoyment of the game better? Is it really so 'wrong' to care about BA? Or put a runner on second and drive him in (RBI) Is that so silly? When a guy hits a HR, is it really necessary to immediately tell us how hard it was hit...like you get extra points for 'exit velocity? If the fence is 300 feet away and the ball goes 301 to win a game...thats really all I care about. Do we really need to endure the shift for another season? Putting a runner at 2nd to start extra innings? Too much tinkering with the 'game' will steal its soul. (but you have to understand I watched Willie, Mickey and the Duke play live. I saw Hoyt Wilhelm throw a no-hitter against the Yankees when he was still a starter. Marveled at Bob Gibson, Warren Spahn and Whitey Ford. AND, was there at little ofd Jarry Park to see the Montreal Expos first game ever....us old timers are getting fewer and fewer...and for many, they may feel good riddance..but we still love the grand old game, you know)
  24. Twins won't win 100 this season. They are broken right now. Individually they have a ton of talent. Collectively, it isn't working for them for some reason. While the hitting has been way off, the bullpen IMO needs to be fixed first, and fast. Starting with not having Colome be a closer. Is it too soon to pull the plug on him? Based on his career arc, no.
  25. So far this month, the Twins team just isn't clicking or in synch at all. Yes there are injuries, but the lineups they have trotted out there last two games should have been able to produce more than4 runs...2 by 8th and 9th hitters solo HR's. Hitting (or lack of it} can't seem to get on the same page as the games where the pitching is good. the 'k count is frightening. Don't have to focus entirely on Sano...there are a ton of guys striking out far too often. The two out hit with runners on has become an endangered species this season. We all know they can and should do better eventually. But the trend is not good. If it doesn't translate into 'w's' hard hit balls and 'better swings' don't mean very much at all. Too much talent on this team to be looking this bad.
