Between going to Maryland and playing in the Cape Cod League in 2014, it's interesting they haven't heard of him, but there are a ton of players out there and Wade never hit much until this year.
A draft is generally good when players actually produce in the Majors. Doing well in the minors is nice but that is just a stepping stone to what counts. The Twins haven't gotten production from their recent draftees, and until they do, those picks cannot be labeled as a success... TBD at best.
Jay is definitely ahead of Meyer, whose stock has plummeted. Only trails Buxton, Sano, and Berrios for sure... probably Polanco as well, maybe depending on whether you think he can play SS. Cody is probably closer to the 20 range.
I'm not impressed with Cody, but by this point the odds of getting a good big leaguer are so low that I don't have strong feelings about picks either way.
He just pitched today, and was low 90s. That's fine for a lefty if the rest of the skills are good enough. If he turns into a #2 starter what would be the grounds for complaint? Of course, it's far from guaranteed that happens, but his velocity isn't really a downside.
Jay isn't real exciting but there weren't any great alternatives remaining. Perkins is a pretty good comp, though Jay is more athletic and has a more varied repertoire that may help him remain a starter. Jay won't throw mid-90s as a starter, but low 90s isn't bad if he can locate it.
The average wouldn't carry over to the big league level. Pitchers and defenses aren't nearly as good in the minors... to hit for a high MLB average requires hard contact and/or superior running ability.
Rosario has a .392 BABIP and yet still has below average offensive numbers (RC+ of 94). Before long his average will plummet and he will be back in the minors. Or he'll stay lucky and wait until next year to crater, Santana-style.
Polanco shouldn't be rushed. I'd DFA Stauffer and call up Bernier as the middle infield utility guy, and DFA Duensing and call up Taylor Rogers to begin his LOOGY career.
Santana wasn't a good hitter in the minors. He lacks plate discipline, a weakness big league pitchers are very good at exploiting. There really is no reason to think Santana will ever be able to hit, and with his inconsistent defense, that means he isn't a future Major League player.
Their roster construction is an embarrassment, plain and simple. It's kind of weird that Ryan can't handle this aspect of his job, but it is what it is.
Yeah I guess that would be tough. But the larger point is just that there's so much season left that a lot of outcomes, including bad outcomes, are possible.
Meyer's walks don't tell the story. Against college and low minors opposition, he could just pipe fastballs down the middle and most batters couldn't hit it. Against better quality opposition, his lack of command has become more evident, and is not even close to MLB-starter caliber. He needs work just to get enough for big league bullpen work.
The GB% is a red flag though. And just in general, Meyer's history of command and health issues is not the kind of thing that usually comes along with being a big league starter.
Basically all the college position players from that draft are performing well so far (some more impressively than others of course). Generally avoiding that demographic is probably one reason the Twins have had mediocre draft results for 25 years or whatever it is at this point.
