Article: Torii Hunter Signing Is Hard To Figure
Dantes929 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I don't love this deal but .286 average with some decent power would still be welcome and I am guessing Hunter replaces Willingham in left field which is a big improvement defensively. They will still be bad but Hunter is an upgrade over Josh. Schaefer for late inning defense and Buxton takes over and we trade Hunter at the deadline which will probably catapult the outfield to at least average with Hicks moving to left. I don't love it especially at that price but I still think Hunter is better than no Hunter right now. . -
Article: Time to Cash In for Jay Bruce
Dantes929 replied to nicksaviking's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
What am I missing here? 654 OPS in 2014 which is about 60 points less than the Twins averaged as a team. .214 average in 137 games? Bolstering an offense that has actually produced pretty well at the expense of our best 2014 pitcher when pitching is our biggest weakness. I am all for selling guys when at their highest and buying guys at their lowest but you are suggesting selling our guys low to pay a ridiculously high price on a guy that should be going low. .790 career OPS isn't even that impressive. Hunter did better than that just a year ago. Horrible idea. -
Article: Arbitration: Who Stays, Who Goes?

I agree with your position but aside from Meyer I really can't recall any pitcher that has been held back. Garza was certainly promoted quickly and I believe that Liriano was as well. May likely would have been promoted earlier if not for the injury to his leg. Leaves us with Meyer. I think you and I disagreed with who was promoted ahead of Meyer but I certainly agreed that he should have been promoted at some point. Still, he is really the only case I can think of.- 59 replies

Article: Arbitration: Who Stays, Who Goes?
Dantes929 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Again, you may be right but how can you be so certain? Moyer's career ERA is 4.25 while Milone's is 3.98. I don't think I undervalue arm strength because I do value it. I just think most people overvalue it. San Fran is generally middle of the pack in velocity of fastballs and they throw them less than anyone. They also ranked in the lower half in strikeouts. Control and stuff (changing speeds, assortment and movement) count for just as much especially in a starting pitcher. All 87 mph pitchers are definitely not created equal.- 59 replies

Article: Arbitration: Who Stays, Who Goes?
Dantes929 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Fair enough. Name one other guy in the system that has as many as 83 starts in the AL with a sub 4.00 ERA.. Just basing quality on mph is pretty shortsighted. I'm not even saying Milone is great because I don't know but easy to check the stats to find that his career ERA so far in 83 starts is much better than the career major league ERA of any pitcher on the team including Hughes and Nolasco.- 59 replies

I want that all as well along with hoping Buxton makes his debut but definitely want Meyer to get his shot as well even if he starts in the pen.- 59 replies

I guess I didn't think Milone looked very good either but 83 AL starts with a better career ERA than Hughes and Gibson and much better than Correia, Pelfrey and Nolasco who all got the benefit of pitching mostly in the NL. What happened?- 59 replies

I think Nick nailed it. Have to give Duensing a little shout out though. His best two years were in 2009 and 2010 when it really meant something. He came up big in two division titles.- 59 replies

Article: Who Says No? Brian Dozier Edition
Dantes929 replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I think Dozier would jump at it though I don't know what the new revenue really does. Is it 30% more across the board? More, less? I don't think the Twins should offer it. That same contract is likely there next year as well so why commit to it now? I like Dozier and probably want him around for another couple years but in 4 years I see more a mix of Santana, Polanco or Gordon covering short and 2nd. 18 homers the 1st half, 5 the second half which I think is closer to what he will give us. If he raises his average and OBP by 40 points next year I would maybe offer the terms you suggest or even higher. I just wouldn't do it now.. -
If Pete Rose can be kept out of the HOF based on character then it makes sense that someone gets in based on character and Oliva should be that guy although the batting titles make a pretty good case based on performance also. Google search the word negative along with the name of almost any HOFer and you will find something. Try it with Oliva and you get nothing. If he was a Caucasian that just played and did nothing else after retiring some might make a case for his inclusion but there wouldn't be 14,000 postcards endorsing him. There just aren't many stats in that era that don't have only HOFers ahead of him and several behind him.

I can imagine liking a rotation of Meyer, Hughes, Gibson, May and Nolasco with Milone in the pen in long relief ready to take over for the weak link. Just 4 short years we have been conditioned to think 3 or 4 of these guys will fail. The talent seems to be there now with more in Berrois on the way. One would think that eventually we should have a rotation that can equal Pavano, Liriano, Baker, Blackburn and Slowey of 2010.

Article: The Twins Awful, Unrepeatable Second Half
Dantes929 replied to James Richter's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Saying you expect about the same from Arcia kind of jumped out to me. I think this guys is capable of so much more if he can continue to reign in his impulse to go for the fences. This is a guy that should focus on average because the power is natural. The bullpen did a nice job most of the season but I saw about 5 games in just two weeks toward the end that they just gave away. Better rotation alone will make the bullpen better. They were just used too much. I also believe that once we get Rosario or Buxton up the outfield defense will be worth a lot of runs. I agree that everything Milone has done prior to the Twins shouts that he is way better than Correia or Pelfrey and should be better in 2015. -
Article: Twins Winter League Updates
Dantes929 replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Not good stats for Hicks but again his OBP is. .380 which is excellent. I understand and agree somewhat that you don't rate players against their spots in the batting order but am I the only one that thinks having a guy that gets on base, even if it is by walk, in the 9 spot has some value. You can't have a whole lineup of guys that get on base without actually hitting well but its nice to have some of those guys in the lineup as table setters especially when our first two guys have some pop. I value patience and walks and think it was the main difference between 2014 and 2013. We scored 100 more runs in 2014 even with 30 fewer homers..- 12 replies

I also have a problem with the quotes. I click quote and it brings me to the comment box without any content. I can't work around it because the copy and paste don't work on here either. Any advice appreciated. As far as this thread goes, the offense had a good year as a team and Willingham really didn't give us much except bad defense so I would think defense first which means Hicks in center and Schaefer in left, preferably with and acquisition to platoon or to allow Hicks and Schaefer to platoon.

Article: On Twins Pitching and Philosophy
Dantes929 replied to Parker Hageman's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I also noticed that May did well up in the zone with the fastball. Should probably note a couple things though. Hitters don't appear to have adjusted to generations of curveballs, changeups and sliders down in the zone and don't appear to be unable to square up those pitches up in the zone. Fastballs with sink still appear to be better down in the zone. I never thought May's issue was where he threw strikes but where he threw balls. So often he would get ahead in the count and his next two or three pitches didn't even tempt the hitters because they were so far out of the zone. Just seems with him his location on pitches outside of the strike zone were just as important as the location of his pitches inside the strike zone.- 34 replies

I really like the idea of Denorfia platooning with Schaefer in left until Rosario is ready. HIcks in center, Santana at shortstop with Escobar utility. If Hicks fails then Santana back in center until Buxton is ready. This just makes sense every which way but in particular better outfield defense. Whichever fo Denorfia or Schaefer do not start can be late inning replacement for Arcia. Denorfia old enough not to block guys like Rosario.

Article: Who's The Next Phil Hughes?
Dantes929 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If I were a pitcher, especially one that wanted to have a great rebound year I would not come to the Twins and it would not be because of their record but because of their outfield defense. Hughes overcame it for one year and I hope and expect them to get much better in 2 or three years with Buxton and maybe Rosario to add a lot of speed so a one year deal would not appeal to me here -
Article: What to do: Eduardo Escobar
Dantes929 replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I didn't really mean to start a side discussion on Vargas and Arcia. It was only a suggestion that IF Rosario, Buxton and Hicks flourish we would have an elite outfield. From where we are standing today that is a big IF. It really shouldn't be a debate at this point if we would be losing an Ortiz in Arcia or Vargas since there is room for both right now and by the time a decision needs to be made we will have much more data on both. Vargas appears more polished right now but I think if Arcia can fall in love with batting average more than home runs he is the guy with more upside. HIS minor league numbers were great. This is related to Escobar in that we need a speedier outfield and Santana still fits the bill for making 2015 outfield a lot faster. As long as Escobar can hold the position at short it just makes sense. Long term I don't see him as the answer but we have done worse. Don't trade him unless it is for the value of a .280 batting good fielding every day shortstop with decent power which is a fairly rare commodity. If you don't get that kind of value then keep him for SS now, depth and utility later. He has already given us way more than I thought he would when we traded Liriano for him. -
Article: What to do: Eduardo Escobar
Dantes929 replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
As long as Arcia is in right I hate the idea of Mauer in left. Lack of range cannot be made up for with a strong arm. My memory was that Escobar did not earn the shortstop spot over Santana but that Santana was simply needed elsewhere. Schaefer presents the same kind of dilemma as Escobar. They both played well and probably deserve more opportunity and if you knew they could do as well or better then the issue is settled but neither one have that kind of vibe. I would much rather have Santana and HIcks in the outfield for speed and defense and once Buxton and Rosario are ready move Santana back to shortstop and accept any rust or deficiencies there. If HIcks steps up I would love an outfield of Hicks, Buxton and Rosario as I think that would be elite defensively. Then move either Arcia or Vargas. Escobar and Plouffe would both be assets on the bench. -
Article: Players Speak About Paul Molitor
Dantes929 replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
NO ONE is going to publicly say anything negative about him, especially those that will potentially play for him so most of these endorsements are pretty banal. Would like to see what AJ, Hunter, Hardy, Revere and Cuddyer have to say about him but that would probably be pretty milquetoast as well. I have often said there are probably thousands of guys that could do a good job and that Hitting and pitching coaches are probably more relevant. I have endorsed Denis Denning or Bob Karn as candidates but I guess since Molitor played for Denning that is a plus. Emphasize fundamentals, accountability and work ethic. I am confident Molitor can handle the in game managing. I am 100% positive he will be criticized and 2nd guessed for it.- 30 replies

Article: Twins to Name Paul Molitor Manager
Dantes929 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I have always maintained that there are thousands of good baseball people that could handle a manager's job. I believe the choice of batting and pitching coach is at least as important if not more so. -
Its not the diving. Its the landing. I personally would not mind a moratorium on his diving for one year. I also love the head first slide into bases but wouldn't mind if he stopped that as well. I am big on defense but he needs to stay healthy enough and for a long enough time to develop and show what he can do offensively. .

Article: Powering Up The Bullpen
Dantes929 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
tobi, you may be right but why are you down on Milone? Shouldn't his 3.98 AL ERA in 500 innings trump Nolasco's 4.48 NL ERA? I agree though that the depth, especially without Meyer contributing, looks really thin. I have no problem with Meyer starting out in the pen but citing how he didn't pitch deep into games when they were limiting his pitches and innings seems a bit catch 22 to me. Or is my memory faulty about his limits?- 27 replies

Article: Postseason Review: Ricky Nolasco
Dantes929 replied to stringer bell's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Pitcher A with KC outfield defense has two on and two out and gives up a deep fly ball on which Gordon or Cain make a fantastic catch. Pitcher B with the Willingham or Young in left and Arcia in right gives up a not quite as deep fly ball but it lands for a bases clearing double. Next guy gets a run scoring hit before the side is retired. Pitcher B arguably pitched better but has a 27.00 ERA inning while pitcher A has a 0.00 ERA inning. Pitching to contact works but you still need good stuff, good control and good defense. KC had a good ERA but ranked 25th in the majors in strikeouts. Give them the Twins outfield defense and give the Twins KC's outfield defense and I am guessing the Royals will still have a better ERA which speaks volumes, but the gap would be a LOT closer.- 11 replies

Article: Postseason Review: Phil Hughes
Dantes929 replied to stringer bell's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
You are right Brock. Opening Day start is overrated. Sometimes I think it would be helpful for a team like the Twins have been lately to reverse their order anyway. 1-5 is probably a mismatch right across the rotation against some teams. 5-1 order and the Twins should own the mismatch in at least two of the starts.- 19 replies
