I agree it was mostly done to get the base runner over or at least looked that way because if he had done it while starting out of the box he would have beat the throw easily. If he had bunted just a little softer he would have beat it also. Mauer's run just seemed very important to me at the time and getting him home from third with one out seemed at least as good a chance as getting him home from second with no outs. I admit to hindsight and hypocrisy here. The important thing to me on this play wasn't the strategy but the execution. As you said, he laid down a really good bunt. If he had bunted back to the pitcher and Mauer either got thrown out or did didn't advance, or Polanco popped out then I would probably have a whole different outlook on the play. Lets also not just assume that if Polanco didn't bunt and had made an out and Mauer didn't advance that Rosario would still have hit the home run.

OBP is .332 vs .316 last year. We are on pace to score 53 more runs than last year. Once year Twins hit 111 home runs, had an OBP of .340 and scored 829 runs. Home runs are great but they are better with guys on base.

Great game by Gibson but what it should have done is give him one more game. Even before tonight he has done better against the White Sox than any other team and even more so at Chicago where he is 4-0 with a 1.78 ERA before tonight. I hope he does well next time but he should still be on a short leash.

I didn't mind the bunt that much. Almost made it a hit and advanced Mauer to third. Three scenarios. 1. What did happen 2. Mauer advances to third by the 2nd batter making an out, Rosario hits a medium deep fly ball and Mauer scores a big run. 3.. Polanco doesn't advance Mauer, Rosario hits medium deep fly ball that now doesn't advance or score Mauer and third guy makes an out. #3 happens a lot so I was happy to see the runs score and Rosario scoring also was frosting on the cake. I would not have been disappointed if Polanco had swung away but their 3rd base man made a great play to keep Polanco from getting a hit and Mauer advances. I'm ok with that. i think Lombardozzi hit 3 dingers in 3 games once. Didn't make him a power hitter.

I'm with you. I have never understood how not pitching for the next 6 or 7 months is doing him any good. He is just as likely to tear a tendon in the first two weeks of ST as he is now IMO. Ask him how he is feeling. If it is simple fatigue then skip a start or two. If there is stress or pain then rest or maybe shut him down. I don't believe there is much evidence that innings or pitch limits is a good thing. I think most on here would agree that the Twins have done as much as possible and more than most teams to protect their pitchers with both innings limits and pitch counts. I also think most on here would agree that it hasn't done much good. Gibson, May, Thorpe, Pelfrey, Liriano, Burdi, Wimmers, Perkins. I am sure I am missing plenty.

If you dig a little further he had a bad August where he had two quality starts in 6 attempts but he had 5 quality starts in 6 tries in September. The whole year we either got great starts from him or bad but not a whole lot in between. I was ok with that then and would love to see it now. 4 quality starts in 21 tries just doesn't cut it.

You are right. I read the minor league reports but mainly for the names I want to see. I looked at his baseball reference page and his minor league and major league totals are unimpressive. I trust your stats for his recent performance and stand corrected.

Gibson was good two years ago and I have given him more benefit than most but I agree he just hasn't been good. He sometimes appears to be victim of bad D or bad calls or bad luck but this is no longer SSS. He had a really good game early in the year where he threw his curve ball a lot but doesn't appear to throw it much anymore. Bad Nick Blackburn for a while now. 2015 he had 17 quality starts out of 32 and many were better than just 6 innings 3 runs that qualify. Last year was a poor 8 out of 25 and this year he is 4 of 21. In his wins two years ago his ERA was a ridiculously low 0.71 so essentially when he was on he was putting up Cy Young type numbers even though he was only on every other game. This year in his wins his ERA is 4.91 so even his best has been pretty poor.

If they win the game tonight does Falvey get all the credit? I'm more annoyed with the Melville start. Had never heard of him before this week and checked his minor league and major league stats and was quite underwhelmed. Would have preferred Gibson on short rest since he only went 4 innings and maybe his sinker benefits by it and then go with Slegers tonight.

There is a flip side to that. Motion is lotion and having him be active throughout the game is more likely to keep him healthy. Sprinting to first every 40 minutes without being active in between is not a great recipe to avoid injury.- 19 replies

I prefer to go with quality on the HOF. Shane Mack in his 5 years with the Twins had a better OPS by 20 points than Puckett and 10 more than Hrbek. Most underrated Twin ever. Sadly, he was having a monster season in 94 that the strike ruined and decided to go to Japan to play. IMO he was a much better player than Tovar and Gladden and simple longevity shouldn't put them above him in the pecking order. Gotta believe Gardy will be in there sooner rather than later.- 19 replies

All year Buxton and Mauer have been my two favorite batters to watch and early that was with Buxton hitting under .100 So much more fun now. Buxton has a much better eye now and when he does go chasing he still stays on the ball. We are seeing what happens when more than just Nunez or just Dozier is having a good year. Only one guy is having a career year (Rosario) what a difference to not have 6 or 7 guys having terrible years.

I could imagine scenarios where this might be a good idea... if Vargas was Tony Oliva. Great find though!

Nah, video shows Grossman sprinting to the ball and then slowed down quite a bit to be able to catch the ball handily just like Buxton did so the madman part wasn't really accurate. It was in between the two and if Buxton saw Grossman could make the catch easily he might have just gone behind him as back up. If he had done that and Grossman backed up also the ball falls and we talk about how bad both of them are. After all Buxton could catch a lot of balls that Kepler and Rosario catch but it is in there territory and they don't have to run as far. This was an in betweener and should be called for. If Buxton did call it then it is the 100% fault of Grossman you said it was. Do you really want your corner outfielders not going for the ball if they haven't been called off?

Ok. You gave me enough clues that I can narrow down who Chief is to 5 people. Martin Crane, Archie Bunker, Al Bundy, Homer Simpson, Peter Griffin. Was I close?

Yeah, just like in volleyball. You don't call "mine" for the sake of the 90% of the time you don't need to. You call it to make a habit of it for the 10% of the time it means something. To be fair though, Buxton may have called it before his image showed up on the screen. We just know he didn't call it a second before the catch.

Mostly agree even though bullet one and two are unlikely. Slegers looked great but lets not forget SSS. Agree most on Perkins. I like the guy and all and hope he can make a come back but like I say about every one coming back from year long injuries, let him show success in the minors before just giving him a spot because he is deemed healthy. If he contributes next year then great but what do they really think he can do this year when his ERA in the minors is over 6. Why Escobar at 3rd instead of Sano? I really like Granite and he is a logical permanent replacement for Grossman but I really wish he batted right with two of the regulars batting left. Not likely that he will go in just as a defensive replacement but if you pinch hit for Kepler because of his splits against lefties it would use less players if a right handed 4th outfielder could go in for him. Its why I always envisioned Hicks as having a lot of value for that. Of course now he is showing I was wrong about him from the left side.

87 Twins had 85 wins vs Tigers 98 wins and Blue Jays 96 wins and were 7-17 against them during the season. Didn't seem to bother them much. Of course there is anecdotal evidence the other way as well and the better team usually wins but the underdog winning is more fun. In other words, worse odds but better payoff.

2-5 against the Red Sox, 5-9 against Cleveland, 1-5 against the Astros makes a total of 8-19 against those teams. I don't like the odds of playing them in a playoff series but I like the odds a lot better than not making the playoffs. A good game by Berrios and a good game by Santana or Mejia is all it takes to have a chance. If we happen to face Cleveland they would have home field advantage where we are 5-1.

Again, no problem with the last sentence. Burdi was drafted in 2014 and et al were drafted then or near then so anyone saying they were the bullpen fix for 2014, 2015 or even 2016 were unrealistic. Just like Buxton and Sano injuries have made us wait an extra year but they may still be the fix for 2018 or 2019. I haven't seen them pitch so I really don't know. Maybe we really do need to get a lot of outside help. I just never liked the argument referred to in my other post. Fans before the season were saying how can a team do basically nothing and expect not to lose 103 games again. Well, we let talent develop and we would now have to go 0-46 to lose 103.

I really have no problem with that but at some point internal options have to step up especially if you have been drafting for the intent purposes of having a great relief corps. Quite possibly May, Burdi and Chargois were 3 of the top 5 guys we were counting on in the pen. What team wouldn't be hurt pretty severely to have their top 3 relievers out before the season even started? I only say possibly because there was a chance May was going to start. You can only plan so far. If KC's elite 3 relievers had season ending injuries before the season started would it have been fair for the fans to say "hey, they should have had 3 more elite relievers in reserve" Where would the early decade Twins have been if Rincon and Hawkins had gotten hurt? Later Twins if Crain and Guerrier got injured a week into the season? I am fine with investing in quality relievers. I just don't like the argument that relying on internal options for next year is identical to relying on internal options in other years. Different levels of talent and stages in development make that point very weak, imo.

Not sure how it is any different than "lets count on x to step up and buy m and n, and who could have known that a, b, and m would get hurt". I have no problem with buying depth and quality but the idea that it hasn't worked to rely on the minors in that past is not proof that relying on the minors in the future won't work. Feels like we have drafted hard throwing relievers the last 3 or 4 years and we are starting to see guys like Busenitz and Hildenberger come up and contribute and also seems like there are other guys ready to step up so the plan of having minor leaguers step up is a better plan now than when it failed in the past. Like I said, I am all for quality and quality depth but injuries are not respecters of how a player was acquired. Burdi and Chargois were supposed to be our hot shots this year. It is just as likely that whatever free agent quality we get this off season go down to the same injuries..
