  1. I bet the Twins resign Pelfry. He's been an ok pitcher the last few months. That gives the rotation 3 ok starters for next season assuming Dedunno comes back. and I am counting Corriea and the other ok starter. Meyer should be up at some point so the beginning of the season would be a tryout for 2 starting pitchers until Meyer is ready unless the Twins go out and sign another pitcher. With the bullpen as good as it is the Twins just need pitchers that can pitch 5-6 ok innings per game occasionally going longer to give the pen a rest. The Twins were banking on a better offense this season to get us to .500. I feel like we will still be one starter short next year though.
  2. by 2015 the core should be in place with Mauer, Dozier, Sano, Arcia, Buxton and Rosario up and others on the way. The bullpen will still be a solid group provided no major injuries. And now for the elephant in the room the rotation.... Next season Dedunno could establish himself with a 3rd season of improvement, Meyer and Gibson, that leaves 2 spots 1 for our many 5th starter candidates stepping in and taking one and the other from FA. hopefully Terry Ryan mans up and gets a starting pitcher with talent. if that last transaction happens either this offseason or next...we should have a potential contender.
  3. To see if Florimon and Colabello can get to 10 HR this season and if either or both get called back up Parmelee and Hicks too. To see if all members of the bullpen finish the season with an era under 4.00. To see how Pelfry finishes out the season as I bet we resign him over the winter. Pinto and Arcia developing More Mauer post concussion catching again and throwing out base stealers and hitting .350 + the rest of the season since his legs are fresh. Battle for bench spots next year with Pinto vs Herman, Thomas vs Hicks vs Mastroianni vs Presley vs Wilkins, Plouffe vs Parmelee vs Colabello .... Can Corriea hit 190 innings this season? .....stay tuned
  4. I am going to give Terry Ryan the benefit of the doubt on the budget thing till I see what he does when we are eminently competitive again. I am not convinced the 2 million or so would get us a much better prospect, as I am sure Pittsburg wants to hoard as much talent as they can. Right now we have few contracts burdening the team and a wave of talent coming. The team will need complimentary pieces. If he goes all cheap then, I will have a problem. But one area Geek, that TR can spend money on is international free agents. There is a Japanese pitcher and a Cuban SS that the Twins are linked to. I hope to see at least 1 of them signed by us. With the draft being more about scouting then dollars for that competitive edge then having TR around is going to be huge as he manages his scouts and drafting philosophy's well. Target Field was never meant to make the Twins big spenders and with Teams revenue's going up with the new TV contract, players are going to get more expensive so we still need some restraint.
  5. When I wrote the article this morning, I did not know Morneau was traded. This article was a response to a comment from earlier in the week when someone wrote about dumping Roenicke and I looked at his stats and thought why? He's been solid. So I wrote the article to attempt to change the paradigm on him a bit. Since writing it I was thinking of looking up all of the WAR's for each player on the team and their salary and compare to the average cost per WAR to see who all had exceeded their value. That would be a cool discussion for after the season.
  6. Romero could start next season in the majors while Sano starts in AAA. He deserves an opportunity. Plouffe hasn't hit for power in a while. His average and on base skills are terrible. I am ready for a change too. Where did you go Valencia.....just kiddin.
  7. Just think if the Twins sign this guy and the Cuban SS their offseason goals would almost be complete. It would just be to tinker with the team the rest of the offseason.... Morneau 1 year contract with low base and maybe another starter with upside signing....
  8. Today is a good day to talk about one of the players on our team that has received nothing but crap since the day we got him because of his peripheral stats and perceived lack of ability as a result. I am talking about Josh Roenicke. While he isn't the reliever I want on the mound in the ninth inning of a close game. He has been rock solid as a 6th - 7th and occasional 8th inning reliever this year. his ERA is currently at 3.08 and he got a hold last night his 12th this year. So while he is walking a high number of hitters 4.5 per 9 innings and striking out just enough at 6.325 per 9 with a 1.33 WHIP on the year he doesn't have eye popping numbers that scream success. But he has effectively kept runs off the board as his 3.08 era on the season will attest. And he is building up a track record as his Major League ERA since the beginning of 2011 is under 3.80 in all 3 seasons and up to year to date. This is reminiscent of another reliever (Guerrier)who lacked talent yet went on to pitch in 7 highly successful seasons for us before signing a 3 year 12 million contract with LA. I would think Roenicke is capable of putting up sub 4 era for the next 2-3 years until he begins his decline phase. Any way you look at it though, it is time to give Roenicke his due and applaud all that he's accomplished this year as he's been one of the few players on the team....yet one of many in the bullpen to meet or exceed all expectations for him. And to think all he cost to acquire was a waiver claim and a place on the 40 man roster.
  9. The Pirates should go for Collabello to platoon with Garrett. That should be the smarter move for them...
  10. Ellsbury is a pipe dream and redundant and expensive get over it. There is a cuban SS and a Japanese Ace Pitcher we need to be more focused on at least one if not both of them as they are young and will be here to help the team win big time in 2 years as our best prospects start to come up next year. As far as willingham goes. none of our recent prospects save Arcia have shown enough to warrant trading Willingham or not resigning Morneau. Plouffe, Parmalee, Hicks have all been terrible and Doumit hasnt been great either. If we needed to squeeze a player to the bench it would be him and if others are hitting then yes we would trade one for even less value but that just hasnt been the case. Hopefully Hicks makes his way back up to being a productive OF next year with Arcia and eventually Buxton moving Willingham to DH and Doumit to the bench. Neither Plouffe or Parmalee have enough to unseat a declining Morneau as the everday 1b when Sano arrives next year. the only player to make a position battle interesting next year is Dozier and Rosario and as of right now Rosario is not going to win that one. If he goes to the OF and is able to push Arcia to 1b (because Hicks and Buxton are already there by allstar break) then Morneau or Willingham could be traded as the other could DH. Then it would make sense.
  11. At this point i am actually rooting for a last place finish as with another strong draft we will have that much more talent available in a few years as the Twins start to win again. Also if the Twins can sign 1 or both of the FA international players Masahiro Tanaka or Alexander Guerrero that would fill the remaining questions marks of ACE pitcher and SS for a while. I wonder if these FA players can see that we are that close to being a dominant team again. And if all things being equal would either pick Minnesota for that reason.
  12. Pinto should come up after the playoffs in AAA for the last few weeks of this season and get a few at Bats ans a few innings behind the plate. Next season he should start in AAA unless or until Doumit is traded or next September he should get the call up and this time if he is still performing it should be permanent.
  13. If the Twins sign him the only area of concern won the team would be the rotation. THe middle infield would be fixed for the next 5 or 6 years. There is enough offense coming up that we will be real good there especially if this guy is that much above average at a week hitting position as Mauer is at Catching. So now how do we fix this rotation problem......
  14. I think Gibson should finish the season with the Redwings in the rotation and then be available for bullpen duties in the playoffs. He deserves to pitch a few playoff innings. I don't think he should be available to go back to back days out of the pen but at least appear in a game or two in the series. I also don't think a few innings in relief then will hurt his arm. He should then prepare for next spring. I don't have a problem if the Twins want to call him up for the last few weeks and have him pitch out of the pen the rest of the season but I don't think he should get many innings. Then he needs to rest and get ready to compete for a spot in the rotation next year. I don't think it should be a given that he will make the team but I think he has a chance. He probably wont be a great pitcher next year as he will probably need next season to make adjustments. I do expect better results than the 50 innings we got this year however.
  15. The Twins will sign someone or 2 to compete for the rotation this offseason plain and simple. will they sign a top tier player no. I think a good buy low player is Dan Haren. He has had 2 down years in a row and can throw innings and come cheaply. (not saying they will just that he would be the top of what they would target) Pelfry is a good candidate to return for 1 more season. And there are plenty of other options out there.
  16. the 75 wins i had down was taking their current .453 win percentage times 162 = 74.75 wins rounding to 75 wins on the season. so if they play at their current levels then 75 is possible and that was my point. 75 is better than where we thought we would end up a few weeks ago thus making it possible for the Twins to say why whould we let Gardenhire go? he overacheived with this team. on another note, i noticed through the years that the better the bullpen the more a team oveerachieves. that would make for an interesting study on the win pythagorean.
  17. The Twins currently have a .453 win % which puts them on track for 75 wins this season. If the Twins win 74-78 games this year, I think that would put Gardenhire in a pretty good spot to maintain his job as manager seeing how bad the rotation is and the fact that the lineup underperformed. With how the Twins have performed lately will Gardenhire keep his job? I think so.
  18. Its a good idea IMO. But your numbers are a little light. probably 10-20 million. Steve Trout will be eligible for arbitration soon and there is already talk he can get 10 million his first time through. so we should expect more than 3 million after arbitration. If Sano were to sign a contract like this he will need to leave some money on the table but not that much. They would probably look at how much he could make if he was to make the team out of spring training and how much he would loose if they wait till June and sign him for fairly close to what he would make market value if he was called up in June. at least that's where I start if I'm Sano.
  19. The 40 man roster issue of having Sano on it or not is not an issue till the rule 5 draft. We will want to have as much talent protected as possible plus we may want to have an open spot for a pick ourselves. We could find another Pressley/ Mack/ Santana (woulda rule 5 picked him) Buscher (minor league part of draft) ..... Then there is the cost of contract and playing time. Unless we have 5 solid starting pitchers next April so that we can compete for the division next year, We should leave Sano in the minors till June or so to delay FA a year. we should also see if he is interested in signing a long term (Longoria like) contract extension.
  20. When you trade for someone who is elite, you want to make sure you can sign them to a long term contract, want to sign them and have done the due diligence that they are going to continue to perform. Hitting is easier to trade for in this type of situation as pitching is so easy to get injured. You typically do not want to sign a pitcher to a 4+ year contract. Where as Stanton you could sign him to an 8 year deal and he will likely perform till his mid 30's. The question is what do we have to give up to get him and is it worth it? I don't see us trading for him, we could as we retool but why him? I would want to wait and see where we are when our own prospects come up and we see who we want to keep and who we want to trade. (Do we keep Hicks or trade him and wait for Kepler or Walker to come up and try to make it here.) In this instance why not wait a year and see if Hicks can make the transition to the majors and see how the other prospects develop? Same with Dozier and Rosario. though would you trade Kepler, Rosario, and may or Meyer for Stanton? would that be enough? Could we add Parmelee or Plouffe to that and subtract another prospect or add a smaller one instead? I guess there is enough redundant prospects to some degree but that is mostly on the hitting and relievers and we really need starting pitchers though. tough call. I wonder if the Twins ever think of stuff like this?
  21. I think signing him to a low cost deal makes sense too as like Brock states he could rebound, we could platoon him with Colabello or Plouffe if need be, or if he slumps we could just give up on him and let Parmelee take over till its time to give up on him too. though i am beginning to think Parmelee isn't going to make it here. If a log jam is created then Doumit or whoever is slumping can ride the bench and players can rotate through the DH spot. Signing Morneau to a 1 or 2 year deal with a low base isnt going to hurt the club. the real question that can have an affect is who will the Twins get to fill out the rotation with next season. The prospect that may get blocked is Rosario when he is ready if Dozier continues to improve. not an interchangeable Corner OF, 1B, DH.
  22. If the 40 man roster spot wasnt an issue, and his impending FA wasn't a factor either, I would be alright with bringing up Sano in September. I do think he would be ready to start in the majors by next spring. But i would rather him wait in the minors a month or 2 to push back FA another season. I would rather guarentee we have a producing Sano when we are winning again then have one learning the game in the majors before the next wave of prospects are comming up and shorting us the extra season of control. I guess we could sign him to a 10 year contract and this whole debate becomes moot as we could then call him up whenever.
  23. It looks like this will give Hendriks one last chance to show something when he comes out for the season or Kyle Davies has been mentioned for a September call up and Diamond if he shows improvement and Blackburn.....who should take his place? I think PJ Walters took himself out of any consideration with his performance last night.
  24. I'm ok with a 1 year contract cause if Sano comes up and takes over 3rd that means Plouffe will compete for time at 1B and DH with Morneau and Doumit until someone is traded or released. (Doumit being the one released if he hits next year like this one). I don't think they need to guarantee Morneau too much as no one really wanted him at the trade deadline this year. I would think a 5 million base with the chance to earn 12-14 million based on production would get the job done. If he hits like last year 7-8 million, like 2009 12-14 million if he hits like 2011 or the first half of this year 5 million and on to the next 1B.
  25. just the lineup not the pitching staff. and wasnt it only half a new 3b as they platooned in 91.
