Article: Sizing Up The Competition: Detroit Tigers
Brandon replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
But the Tigers are going to have to replace Insler, Miggy, Martinez, as they are aging and a huge part of the team. On Pitching there is Price as a FA and Verlander and Sanchez aging. Maybe not this year as I think they will still be good this year but next year will start the slide and really kick into full swing from there IMO. Unless they have other moves that work out but I think they will be too saddled by bad contracts for a few years. -
Article: Sizing Up The Competition: Detroit Tigers
Brandon replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I agree with this assessment. The Tigers have the deepest rotation in the division. the question is how will their pen hold up. I am surprised they are not making any moves with whats still available this offseason. Their offense is good too. Next year they could be competitive too but after that I am going to start doubting it. Next year they'll need Price to resign or a good replacement. But after next season when their offensive pieces are all 2 years older I can see several of them breaking down and slowing down as well. -
Personally I think Escobar > Hicks so Escobar should remain at SS and Santana in CF. But what do I know. so if Hicks can hit .250 / .340./ .350 then I can live with that till Buxton comes up. Also I expect Hicks to run more than he did last year.

I think a 3 year 22 to 24 million extension would make sense through his prime years for Plouffe. Plouffe would have lifelong security and we should get a discount for that contract. I am not saying they should do that but if they do extend him that should be the range. I do not think they should extend him beyond 3 years though unless its with an option the Twins can easily decline.

Article: Trevor Plouffe's Improved Defense
Brandon replied to Parker Hageman's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I am happy with what he has done as he was almost a failed prospect altogether a few years back and he kept grinding it out. Now he has trade value and value to this team. If he is playing above average defense and hits .260 with 30 2Bs and 20 HRs I can live with that.- 28 replies

Article: How Secure Is Suzuki's Starting Job?
Brandon replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Suzuki changed his swing to bring his average up. so I suspect he will be able to hit in the .280 range with a bunch of doubles especially if he gets enough rest. I think he slumped / tired down the stretch. Still he hit over 30 2Bs last year. Suzuki will be fine for 300-500 AB the next 2 years and will be worth the value of his contract. Pinto I hope shows enough to start 50-60 games at C. It would be nice to see him get around 350 plate appearances with an OPS near .775 -
They will keep players like Millone, Pelfry and Deunsing for depth. They are very good 1th and 12th and 13th type pitchers to have on the staff.

Andy Macphail isn't listed in the book. surprising...2 Twins World Series and also rebuilding the orioles as they won as soon as he left with the foundation in tact. I guess not winning with the Cubs killed it for him. -
I think its more because they are between the ages of 16 and 18 and most of the prospects we rate start around 18-19 after they graduate high school. Next year Diaz and Minier should be up to Elizabethton and we will start talking more about them. I have a hard time rating prospects in the low minors so I tend to give preference to AA and AAA players before the A ballers and rookie leaguers. Going to the Dominican League is just a little too far for me to be able to comprehend on a prospect list where I am not in the know on everyone. Thrylos, I did want to say I thoroughly enjoyed reading your list. Its well though out and I agree with most of it. I do think Gordon is being rated a little higher than he should at this point. The one I think could be higher is Burdi. He is a future all star from what I keep seeing and reading. Even if he is in the bullpen if he is that dominant he makes baseball games an 8 inning game instead of 9.

2015 Twins offseason top 40 prospects list: 1-5
Brandon commented on Thrylos's blog entry in Thrylos' Blog - select Tenth Inning Stretch posts
I have Polanco higher on my list too. not quite 2nd but I do have him ahead of Gordon and Kohl at this point. Though I tend to give more credit when a player A: gets promoted to the majors early and B: Shows promise at AA. I think the jump is pretty big to AA and if you can make it there you have a chance of at least having a cup of coffee in the majors. anything below Beloit is too far down to judge unless the prospect is stand out or shows something we take notice of. If I could go to the games and scout I would probably judge the top prospects differently but levels go into consideration and age for level does too as far as being an arm chair grader goes. -
2015 Twins offseason top 40 prospects list: 21-25
Brandon commented on Thrylos's blog entry in Thrylos' Blog - select Tenth Inning Stretch posts
comment on #24 prospect. 1 strikeout per 6 Plate Appearances is not a strikeout machine. That's actually a pretty decent rate. The goal is to be better than 1k per 5 PA and anything worse than 1k per 4 PA is a strikeout machine. I could be wrong though but that s what I see. Overall this is a good read. I don't disagree with your thought process other than that above. -

what's the scouting report on Stauffer? I know nothing about his stuff. -
Article: Twins Extend Phil Hughes
Brandon replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I like this move. I would be surprised by anyone who didn't. Its about 2-4 million per season discount. Hughes gets closer to making 100 million for his career with enough of a guarantee to get close enough to 100 million that it doesn't matter if he gets there or not. He'll be eligible to sign a new contract that can take him to 200 million in career earnings if he continues to pitch well. This is a nice early Christmas present to the Fans from the Pohlad's this year. This is a lot nicer then the middle finger we get when a free agent leaves. Also lost in the new is the Twins signed Will Ledezma a LHRP to a minor league deal. -
I agree Millone is the likely starter unless something happens. I think its 50/50 May could start the season in the pen. I guess that may be at Pelfry's expense. I hadn't thought that through all of the way. I do think Meyer will start in the minors. I don't think they should move him to the bullpen unless the just cant throw more pitches and consistently get through 6 innings a start. Maybe if there is a need in the pen and he isn't progressing with his consistency then try him in the pen.
-
I'll take a stab at this. Meyer will start the year in AAA. May may be there as well but I think he'll get a long reliever role to break in with less pressure as long as Millone doesn't implode or get hurt in spring. The bullpen is the hardest to predict due to so many options. I am going to list in order of positions not an actual batting order. Starting 9: 1B Mauer 2B Dozier SS Santana 3B Plouffe C Suzuki RF Hunter CF Hicks LF Arcia DH Vargas Bench: OF Schaeffer IF Escobar IF/OF Nunez C Fryer (yes I prefer Pinto or a bat but I don't get everything I want) Rotation: Hughes Santana Gibson Nolasco Millone/ May Bullpen Perkins Fien Deunsing Theilbar Pressley Pelfry May/ Oliveros/ Tonkin/ Achter/ Graham (more candidates than I can remember off the top of my head). If May makes the rotation I don't think Millone will end up in the pen unless there is a trade of someone else. If May makes the rotation it will be a battle of all the other candidates for the last spot.

Article: Get To Know: RHP J.R. Graham
Brandon replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
on MLB.com he entered the season as the Braves #6 prospect and is now our 17th rated prospect. http://minnesota.twins.mlb.com/mlb/prospects/watch/y2014/index.jsp?c_id=min#list=min -
This is why I am surprised the both Parmelee and Colabello were let go last season. That leaves Pinto as the only available bat to DH consistently if Vargas fails and needs more time in AAA. With Parmelee, Hunter could slide in and DH some with Parmalee in RF. maybe Sano is ready after 6 weeks in this scenario.... On Hunter he can also light a fire and stay on Hicks to be better and not let up. In addition to making a better environment to succeed. Back to Vargas, I do think he has shown enough bat control to be the clean up hitter over Arcia at this point. Plouffe or Hunter could hit there if they prefer a veteran in that spot. If TR says he is looking for bullpen help then he is looking for bullpen help. I think he is looking for a low cost bullpen piece and not a specific player. If he was looking for a player he would have signed Neshek as the 2 year deal he got isn't prohibitive as its only 2 years. Neshek probably would have signed here since its close to home all things being equal. He probably would have given a small discount to come back. So that tells me TR is watching Pohlads pennines and is going to go after more depth and let them all sort it out in spring training. I do not think Meyer will start the season in the pen. The Twins have stated several times he doesn't have the resilience for the role.

Article: White Sox Winning Winter Meetings Through Day 1
Brandon replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Comparing what Chicago has done to what the Twins have done....LaRoche replaces Adam Dunn so not a big upgrade. The other signings are because Smardjiza knock out their worst starter like Santana does for us only our worst starter was way worse than theirs so Santana is a bigger upgrade for us then Smardijiza was for Chicago. Cabrera has 70 more OBP then the OF he replaces which is huge cause they really need OBP guys and Hunter basically replaces the offense of Willingham and Kubel with slight improvement. Chicago's bullpen was a disaster last year so that is really improved for next year. Chicago doesn't have much depth and they are reconstructed as a win now team. They have a terrible farm system and IMO are in danger of becoming what the Pirates were for a long time a team close to .500 with no where to go.- 276 replies

What grade would you give the Guerrier signing? He was effective for half a season in terms of ERA till his last 2 appearances and only cost 1 million. I'd give his signing a C. On Nolasco I still think it was an ok move and that he'll return to being a 12-15 game winner with close to 200 innings. for last year I give his signing a D- (he did pitch ok coming back from injury to finish out the year) F before the disabled list appearance. Kubel and Bartlett should have just started the season in the minors.

I give the Twins a B grade so far this offseason. I think better of the Torii Hunter signing. not so much because he is so great. He is good and can be a good influence for Hicks to get over the hump and become a productive major league player. He may be exactly the person to be able to do that for Hicks. But there also wasn't a lot of other options either. Rios, Rasmus, Aoki, Hunter, between them I am fine with Hunter. I would have liked Cabrera better but that's it and he was thought to go for 4 or 5 years 14 million range which is more than the Twins wanted to spend. As for the Santana signing, There aren't many options that are better and none in that price range so I give that signing a solid A. If the Twins were going to go after Shields, Scherzer or Lester then it would be lower but seriously did anyone expect the Twins to even target Santana? I think the Twins biggest mistake was not signing Neshek to a 2 year 12 million deal. granted that is a little high but if the Twins want a good reliever for the pen you might as well get one of the best from Minnesota that wants to be here. and 2 years is not that long. we probably could have had a small discount. maybe 2/10 or 2/11 instead. Yes I know there are other options so my expectations are increased for our bullpen next year since we missed this obvious signing. I still expect another signing here too. not sure who they'd target but they could use a solid arm till Burdi comes up.

Article: Purchasing A Rotation, And What It Means
Brandon replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Why not? they have a top 5 offense that just got better with Hunter. Their rotation while not great has 3 dependable starters with a 4th one who should bounce back giving the team 4 12-15 game winners. The bullpen is above average as well. we may have lost 92 games last season but last season our team wasn't the same type of loosing season as the others. we improved our run differential by over 100. We just improved a rotation spot that should net us 40 runs or so in the run differential for next season. so what part of our team is going to keep us from contending?- 157 replies

Article: Santana Signing Signals Shifting Mindset
Brandon replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
7. Now the Twins have a pitcher they can trade down the line to help replenish the farm system when they start drafting in the first round with the 28th pick. This would happen if the younger pitchers show they belong and can adequately replace the pitcher being traded or we have the ammo to trade a prospect to acquire a piece that helps us get to the World Series. -
I thought Santana would get 15 or 16 million per year so I think we did real well to not only get our pitcher but at the price too. If you look at his expectations last year he expected a 5 year 75 million and got 1 year at 14.1 million + the 54 million guarantee on this one he came close at 68.1 million. Does anyone know if there is a 1 million buyout on the option as I see on mlbtraderumors there is an update saying the contract is for 55 million guaranteed.
