Bold Predictions for the Twins Offseason
Brandon commented on jtkoupal's blog entry in Blog jtkoupal
I disagree with #2. I think the twins will trade for a starting pitcher. there's too many teams willing to trade a starting pitcher for this not to happen. Also I will say this for our FA efforts. we will resign Neshek as a FA. and have a Minnesota connected bullpen of Perkins Neshek and Theilbar -
The bullpen is solid. We could roll with 4 or 5 of the same 6 pitchers with Burton out and maybe Swarzak. I am not going to say he's definitely out at this point as most of the options from the high minors are ok options but not great and Swarzak is still not too expensive. So we'll see with him. In terms of whose good enough to stay I think Perkins, obviously, Thielbar cause he too was effective again and inexpensive, Fien was 2nd best reliever, and Deunsing was arguably the best first half reliever that didn't close games. But adding a few power arms will be a big welcome addition to the pen as Burdi could move Fien to the 7th inning and Oliveras or Achter may replace Swarzak as the long man. I would think that would be enough of an overhaul to start the season unless Deunsing is included in a trade which I can see as a possibility especially if we take on salary in that trade. I think a real key for the bullpen next year is to find another starting pitcher that can go 200 innings. Having 4 guys do that can put the bullpen in position to be real effective as they can have more rest and maybe even go to a 7 man bullpen for stretches and have a longer bench. Something I wrote about last year as part of the Twins winning formula is to have 5 solid average starters and an above average pen = a better than average team ERA.

Article: Powering Up The Bullpen
Brandon replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The reason I say this, is because If Meyer goes to the pen and so does Pelfry, then we would almost need to sign another pitcher unless Berrios is ready as our depth 6/7/8th starters are not as plentiful at this time. Hughes/ Nolasco/ Gibson/ May/ Millone then you have Gilmartin and Berrios and Pino if healthy next season and he re-signs. That's not a lot of depth if we can not count on Berrios as an option. Maybe Rogers and The other mid level prospect Duffy I think could be ready enough to pitch up here. Who else would we be able to count on if Gibson or Hughes gets hurt for a month to start the season?- 27 replies

I think I am fine with any of the three managerial choices. If Mientkewicz is manager then Molitor should be offered a coaching job. If Lovullo gets the job then he may want Molitor but not as important. If Molitor gets the job then Mientkiewicz should get the bench coach job so he can learn on the job.

Meyer needs to be either starting or in the bullpen. I don't really care where just think he needs to be one place or the other and not going back and forth. I do like Pelfry in the pen. Can he get his pitches up over 95 there? How long till Berrios is ready? I know he is pretty much ready for AAA. This tells me he could be ready early next season.- 27 replies

My expectations for Mauer are tempered a little. .290-.310 / .380/ .420-.440 or 35+ 2Bs and 10-15 HRs He really needs to be near elite defensively to get close to what we are paying him for. 200 hits in a season would be nice too since he wont hit 25 HRs- 19 replies

I can see Reed, Burdi, and Jones and maybe a few other high powered relievers climbing the minor league ladder to AAA if not the majors next season. I can see the Twins waiting till May of 2016 to bring up most of these relievers. I do believe the Twins will want to at least see some decent control from their relievers before bringing them up.

I expect 190-210 innings and a high 3's ERA maybe low 4's winning 12-15 games. If we had 5 starting pitchers like that we would be in the playoffs.- 11 replies

Article: Let's Just Roll With What We Have
Brandon replied to RealTwinsFan357's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I can see us standing pat in the OF as Parmelee, Hicks, Schaeffer all battle it out in LF and 4th OF till Buxton arrives. Signing someone does make us better though. As far as pitching goes we can do 1 of 2 things. Sign or trade for a starter that makes our rotation 4 deep with 1 spot to compete for. or sign a player like Corriea who is coming back from injury to compete for a rotation spot with the others. While we have 5 names to compete for 2 spots Pelfry, Millone, May, Meyer, and Pino, I guess you can add Swarzak to the list. I am not sure if Pelfry can start or if Millone or Swarzak will be back next season. I also don't think the bullpen needs much turnover. unless there is a trade. I see Deunsing back with the Twins. I think Burton is gone and maybe Swarzak, but that is about it. I do see the Twins brining in other relievers as the season goes on but there won't be too much of a bullpen turnover unless there is a trade. And there really doesn't need to be. -
Plus how old is he 21? He has another 3 to 4 years to hit his stride. How does he compare to college hitters getting drafted? Obviously not top of the class but still solid. I think he has the floor of Benson and a much higher ceiling.

Postseason Review: Schafer, Parmelee, Nuñez
Brandon commented on stringer bell's blog entry in stringer bell's Blog
I think all 3 should be back with the Twins next year. They should all be on the bench too. Though if the Twins do not go and get a LF then Schaeffer and Parmelee look like a solid platoon combo there. With 300 AB and pinch running appearances Schaeffer could potentially steal 30-40 bases. and Pamelee could hit 8 -15 HRs with 200 - 300AB with close to a .700-.720 OPS Nunez is a solid MI bench player. He is capable of hitting 260-.270 with .310 / .350 for a .660 OPS with 10-15 stolen base potential. He could start for a stretch but not full time IMO. I like that the Twins have a veteran bench going into next season outside of back up C.- 4 comments

Article: The Widening Search For a New Twins Manager
Brandon replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Its not like this team has lots of experience hiring major league managers. They need to take their time and do it right. Maybe this search can go into next year and they can bring back Gardenhire on an interim basis. -

LF Options internally for next season: Schaefer Nunez Parmelee Sano Rosario Hicks Can the Twins find a manager that can optimally platoon the best 2 here unless Sano takes over at the allstar break. Still not great but not horrible if done right. -

Article: Postseason Review: Josmil Pinto
Brandon replied to stringer bell's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I don't hold a lot of stock in pitch framing at this point because of what Twinsgeek wrote about in terms of counts that borderline pitches get called balls and which ones tend to get called strikes. when those 2 sets of data get brought together then I will have confidence in that stat. As far a Pinto goes. If we want to se him as a Catcher he needs to spend time in AAA and work on his game. If he is to be a bench player he still needs to work on Catching and also 1B and maybe RF or something and except the fact he is a bench player until he learns to Catch better.- 25 replies

Article: Postseason Review: Aaron Hicks
Brandon replied to stringer bell's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Hick's floor is 4th OF but I think his ceiling is Starting Pitcher or Reliever with that 97 mph fast ball. When he was drafted many scout doubted his ability to hit up here, but no one doubted is ability to pitch. -

He's their best hitter right now so that's not going to happen. think his long term position will be in the OF especially If Escobar is adequate at SS.- 27 replies

I just hope this means we can all agree that Terry Ryan doesn't rely on his abacus as much as he used to for statistical analysis. -
Postseason Review--Eduardo Escobar
Brandon commented on stringer bell's blog entry in stringer bell's Blog
Escobar beat my modest expectations by a mile and further shows why we should continue to believe in Terry Ryan. He did show some line drive ability last year so while 35 2Bs is high for anyone with that few ABs in a season I do have confidence he will hit 2Bs at a better than average rate. his batting line this year is Mauer lite. Mauers line without the walks. For next year, I am fine with him at SS while Santana holds down CF for a bit. Though he is a good candidate to be included in a trade package for a starting pitcher. Both the Mets and Cincinnati have pitchers to trade and a need at SS. I personally like Niese as he is a LHP with 2 years and 2 options years on a contract at a reasonable price. maybe add in a reliever or minor leaguer to balance this out..... -
Article: Terry Ryan: Still Employed
Brandon replied to Twins Fan From Afar's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I just read the article. They grade the Twins with the best farm system in the game and should be one of the best teams as soon as the talent comes up. 25 is an arbitrary number if we changed that to 22 and under or under 23 the Twins would be first or second on the list. -
Article: The Merits of Mientkiewicz and Molitor
Brandon replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I was going to write that one should be manager and the other a coach. But if that is the case then Molitor will be the manager and Mientkiewicz the bench coach.
