I am not looking to list specific players they should target, nor am I asking you to do it as well. Neither of us is in a position to do that. You are basically saying that because we are in June, moves can't be made There are cheap, reliable RP to be had regardless of your opinions. I am not mocking ownership, I am calling them out. My starting point on this is that Pohlad is not putting his wallet where his mouth is. If he truly believes this is a competitive team, he should be doing more than scouring the daily DFA list. By not making even the smallest of moves, he is showing his true colors.

Well, for starters, there are currently 7 teams with a winning % under .450 and at least 5 games out of the wild card. Amongst those teams are 30 RP that are making $5m or less. I would probably start there. Complain about the horrible bullpen, then mock any discussion to improve this bullpen...

After being initially somewhat optimistic about having a new Pohlad at the realm, I am ready to call anything he says Bull***t. I don't care about the weakened state of the American League or the AL Central. You have to take everything year-by-year. This team is currently 4.5 games out of 1st placed and 1.5 games out of the Wild Card. The Twins have blown the most leads of any team in baseball. They are currently in the race and have an obvious hole that can easily be filled. Forget the trade deadline. For them to not go out RIGHT NOW and acquire two low-end, reliable RP (probably spending less than $10M total) to help this team get into the playoffs says everything you need to know about how this Pohlad truly feels about this team. Talk is cheap. Lack of movement says everything.

I am more than willing to accept I was wrong in my assessment... I am happy to see that he is now willing to play 1B. Let's hope that AAA bat finds it's way back for the big club.

Not looking to pick a fight, just balancing the scale: 1) The daily outcry on this site with Gasper on the roster should not be forgotten 2) The outcry was earned as he carried an OPS+ of 39 in MN 3) Moran has been a typical RP to date... to paraphrase a quote on Minnesota weather: If you don't like a relief pitcher, wait 10 minutes. Don't forget his 5.74 ERA his last season in MN For their sakes, I wish them success. From a Minnesota POV: eh.

The phrase everyone is circling around in their comments to this article is: Over-reaction anyone? Sure, he has been hot since his demotion, but so what? Mickey Gasper is a AAA legend. MLB? Not so much. What adjustments has he made at the plate? While at least showing some semblance of positional flexibility, is he actually putting in hard time in practice? How has his attitude been? It didn't sound real hot when he was sent down. Lewis could hit .500 in AAA, but unless he is meeting the criteria set forth by the organization to improve on the field and at the plate, the only way he sees his way back to the big club is a rash of injuries. It is hard to see any scenario where he is promoted before the all-star break.

No problem with this. You want pitchers to be successful in all aspects. Obviously some decisions were made that seemed out of his control that negatively impacted his mindset and approach. Let the bulldog be the bulldog, he has had enough success to earn that right. Caratini has caught him a lot this year, so it doesn't appear to be a pitcher/catcher comfort issue...

There were spot starts and a few previous attempts at BP games, but it did not become vogue until Tampa. Since then, it has become more commonplace. Please stop making assumptions.

My comment said nothing about the Opener concept, only starting games with RP.

Umm... Having RP start games is pretty common now. They call them Bullpen games. I am not sure where that comment comes from.

Change is painful. It doesn't matter if the change is good or bad, it is painful. The movie Moneyball was spot on: "...the first guy through the wall always gets bloody, always. Is this process successful? The sample size is too small to give a definite answer one way or another. Tampa got questioned when they began using a RP to start the game, now it is relatively common. The role of pitching has changed dramatically over the last few years, and continues to change. Who is to say this won't be more widely used in the future? We complain about the Twins not making changes. Then the Twins try something different and we complain about that....

I am at a loss as to why a player that is currently struggling to find his way onto a MLB roster is being resistant to a positional change. I would think that he would be doing anything asked of him to find his way back to the majors. Look at Michael Cuddyer as an example. That kind of stubbornness will limit many of his options going forward. No team wants an (at best) average defensive 3B that has not shown consistency at the plate and is resistant to change. That path leads out of baseball pretty quick.

Forget the Twins record, forget the "rebuilding", forget the pending strike... The Twins know how much they are willing to pay on a Joe Ryan extension. Give Joe that offer. If he passes, trade him. As for him being under control next year? Better returns today, especially with the pending strike. But follow the adage "Better to move a player a year too early than a year too late". -
I have been shouting for months that the pending strike is delaying the top prospects from seeing MLB this year. Part of this equation not addressed in the article is potential service time implications. If they call up someone who ends the season on the MLB roster, and next year is lost due to the strike, service time might be grandfathered in.

Almost all great relievers are washed up starters. I can see why Jax wants to be a SP, the path to make money is easier. I am a little surprised TB is moving him in that direction as he had a hard go of it the first time around and was not exactly the best of the pen earlier this year. He is also on the wrong side of 30.

Before all of the negativity works it's way into these comments: - It doesn't matter if the AL is soft, or the Twins schedule has been soft, or that the defense against them has been bad, or any other stat that you want to put in degrading their record so far. The Twins can only play the schedule they have been given. - Nobody here is claiming this is a 100-win team. But look at the opening day roster and where things stand now. How many players that were expected to be solid contributors have flamed out or have strongly underperformed? Wallner, Lewis, SWR, Keaschall, Caratini, half the bullpen. Injuries have claimed a handful more. Where would this team be if Lopez was in the rotation instead of SWR? Top wild-card team, maybe higher? What if the BP was even mediocre instead of horrible? - Time will tell if what we are seeing from Martin, Larnach, even Lee is sustainable. What if it is? The general rule is teams know what they are after 40 games. Not sure if that applies here because of all the player turnover. It is very possible that while this team is overperforming initial expectations, they are actually better than their record suggests. That is a concept that will probably blow up 70% of this website. We are getting close to the point that Pohlad needs to start putting his money where his mouth is. If he thinks this team is a contender, and their current record says they are in the hunt, what is he going to do to improve the roster?

Clemens and Kriedler both bring value to a team. They can both play average to above-average defense at multiple positions. The difference between those two and Willi Castro is at the plate. They don't need to be Buxton offensively, but if they can be adequate, the defense carries them. Ideally they both play extremely well so one of them can be flipped at the deadline. Gray is a stop-gap and probably will not last the season. Jackson is fungible. Even if they lose him, MiLB is littered with defense-only catchers that can be had for relatively nothing. Gomez's stuff and age, along with nobody pushing him for a spot, should give him a fairly long runway to see if he can put it together.

Jeffers agent is Scott Boras. Boras clients do not sign extensions. Players choose Scott Boras because the only thing that really matters is getting the most money from whoever will pay it..

I joined this site over 14 years ago. It probably puts me pretty high on seniority list. At the time, I chose the Fire Dan Gladden moniker as a joke, albeit an honest one. I have not paid much attention to it until relatively recently… I do not know Dan Gladden. My opinions on him are strictly as a radio personality. Do I think Dan Gladden is a solid radio voice? No. Do I want the Twins to replace him? Yes. As a color guy he is tolerable. As a play-by-play, he is lost and has shown no improvement over his extended time on the radio. I make no apologies for this opinion and own it every time I am asked. Do I consistently comment on the fact I think he should be gone? No. Does it drive every comment, every post, every response I make? No. Do I use it as fuel to be hostile, negative, and belligerent in my views on this site? Nope. Discussions with posters on TD typically lead down one of two paths: A) Respectful discourse that typically allows both sides to air their points and agree to disagree. B) Disagreements where one side turns the attack personal; calling names and using questionable adjectives. Enough to show true colors, but not enough to get booted from the site. To the handful of posters that have attempted to use the “Fire Dan Gladden” moniker against me when they have no other coherent points to make, I have removed that option from your arsenal.
