He want's to come back and if he's willing to take a significant discount and we're doing so on the premise that he's a fringe rotation guy, that'd be just fine. There's no guarantee that he comes back healthy next year, and even if he does, his entire career shows you that he's a guy that's going to pitch well enough to beat bad teams and be infuriating against good lineups. If we're signing him to be our number 3 starter and have an inside track on a rotation spot in the playoffs, I'd much rather see him leave.

Offseason Blueprint: Making Big Betts
Cody Pirkl replied to Nate Palmer's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If that's the cost to trade for Gray then you do that tomorrow. I highly doubt it though, Rockies are going to snag as much young pitching as possible if they're making trades. -
Given Graterol's injury history and workload history, I just don't see it. Soroka threw 153.2 innings the season before he made his MLB debut. Graterol only threw around 100 last season and saw a big step down in workload this year. If they start him in the rotation for 2020, they're putting themselves in a tough spot later in the season when his innings start to pile up. Not to mention I'd guess they give the first chances to Smeltzer, Thorpe, and Dobnak just considering service time implications. He pitched well enough to be put on the playoff roster, but the last thing they want to do is depend on him for a rotation spot in 2020 on opening day.
-
If Dobnak is our number 5 then the FO has done a pretty good job this offseason. He'll likely never be league average in strikeouts, but he dominates the other two points of the triangle with ground balls and control. It's not a direct comparison, but pitchers like Mike Soroka are an example of proof you can have success with this method despite it being less common in 2019. Dobnak could easily flame out given just the sheer historical context of pitchers with his path to the majors. That being said, his minor league numbers are pretty impressive at least in terms of consistency. There's no reason he can't carve out a nice career as a back end of the rotation starter. He's already shown more at the major league level than any other in house options we have.

Handing a Qualifying Offer to Michael Pineda
Cody Pirkl replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Bring him back. If he's your 3 or 4 you're looking at a strong rotation. Another year recovered from TJ and if he gives you anywhere near what we got last year, it'd be a steal. -
His defense is a serious problem. If you look at just about anything but fielding percentage, he's got absolutely no future in the outfield. If he could switch to 1B he would be incredibly valuable, but has never played there. I also think he would command at least a decent amount of money. Offense will be the very last think the front office is shelling money out for this season.

If they offer a QO, he may not accept it right away and hit the market. That being said, he would still have that draft pick attached to him, which would knock out a lot of the competition in terms of other contract offers (see Kibrel and Keuchel last offseason). The Twins can still negotiate a longer term deal while all this is going on, and I'd argue this would be the best case scenario.

He literally hit 102 a few days ago. He's had a couple games where he didn't get a lot of swinging strikes, but he's 21 years old. We saw him when he was on against Cleveland and he was unhittable.

Yes he did. He stood at home plate no less than 2-3 seconds watching a fly ball that was nowhere near a no doubter. I feel pretty confident that if he runs out of the box immediately, he's into third easily despite the great throw. It's easy to say that it didn't matter because we gave up another run the next inning, but it gave the momentum away when we really only had it for a few seconds.

It definitely should have, but he played little to no outfield in the minors and it's hard to blame the kid. I'm sure it's something they work with him on in the offseason, but I doubt we see him out there too often.

The Twins Need Early Season Eddie
Cody Pirkl replied to Parker Hageman's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I don't know that there's any difference between Eddie now and Eddie in the beginning of the season. Like you mentioned, it's just the adjustment the pitching has made. Maybe he can adjust his approach enough to improve a bit, but even if he can, it probably won't happen anytime this year when we need it. -
We all know the lineup is in shambles. Obviously that's the main problem with this team right now. A close second at this point is it seems like there's one decision that Rocco makes every night that leaves you wondering how differently the game could have gone. He's making decisions beyond rookie mistakes at this point, and I for one am really starting to lose faith in him as someone who should have full control of a major league game. Kohl Stewart coming into a 3 run game when we have a 15 man bullpen is downright unacceptable. I'd make the argument that not only should he have not been given a September roster spot with his 5.14 AAA ERA, but he shouldn't be occupying a 40 man spot either. We've heard plenty about the roster crunch in the offseason about the several guys who need to be added to the 40 man, and obviously that requires some be taken off. I'd expect one of those first castoffs to be Kohl Stewart. It appears the plan going into Cleveland is to just flick the switch and become a new team. I just don't see it. That being said, if we can come away with one win in Cleveland, we'd still be significant favorites. If we come away with two, I'd say it's effectively over. We'll see how this works out.

If they come out of Cleveland even a game and a half up, it would take a legitimate collapse to lose the division. Even half a game would be tough. Don't underestimate how easy it is for Cleveland to lose winnable games themselves.
-
I'm fine with resting players throughout the season, especially through the first 2/3 of the season. My issue is that Rocco has said he's done it for guys like Garver so they could be fresh for the end of year stretch. As we've seen, he can't help himself and that was just a blatant lie. Garver is one of the few players actually hitting right now, and Rocco won't even allow him to take at bats in consecutive games. He's playing with fire, and it would be perfect Minnesota sports to see all the "rest days" along the way and blow this division by half a game or something. I've definitely lost a lot of faith in Rocco as we've seen his decision making crumble in big spots, both in individual games (bunting, leaving pitchers in too long, bringing guys like Parker into high leverage spots repeatedly) or now when the season is still very much in question (resting our best hitters, leaving Rosario in the cleanup spot). There's rookie mistakes, and then there's just ignoring statistics. The latter is just unacceptable.
-
At this point, there's no reason to be sitting Garver or leaving him on the bench in big spots. This should be the stretch that we've been resting him for all year, but Rocco continues to "keep him fresh" for games that may not exist at this point. He's tempting fate in terms of possibly one of the most embarrassing collapses in Twins history. Most people will blame the injuries, when the reality is that there are several steps we could be taking along the way to mitigate them. I still think we should win the division, but I'm starting to wonder what it's going to take for Baldelli to put our best remaining players on the field on any given day. You also have to start to wonder how many times we need to see Eddie Rosario lunge at ball 4 6 inches outside with bases loaded before he gets moved out of the cleanup spot. He has absolutely shot us in the foot for the last few months and yet again Baldelli seems to be basing his decision on personal relationships rather than stats that everybody but him can see.
-
I agree with this 100%. Nobody is going to score 10+ runs every game en route to a world series title, that's not how baseball works. I can't remember the last pitchers duel the Twins have won, mostly because I can't remember a single pitchers duel.

Time for a lineup change
Cody Pirkl commented on the_brute_squad's blog entry in the_brute_squad's Blog
Polanco could profile as a decent number 9 hitter, but they've made it pretty clear that's Buxton's spot when he comes back, and I don't think there would be much impact with moving him there in the short term. I also don't think it would be beneficial to put him in the mix with a struggling Cron and guys like Schoop and Cave. He's been slumping but he's still one of our top 3 or 4 OBP guys, and I think a switch hitter with that skill that the lineup mostly lacks would go to waste at the bottom of the order. I'd expect something like a .280 average and at least a .330 OBP the rest of the way. Sandwiched between Kepler and Cruz is a great place for a player like that. -
Did the Twins Miss Out On Zac Gallen?
Cody Pirkl commented on Patrick Wozniak's blog entry in Patrick Wozniak's Blog
I think it would have been another savvy move by the Twins to have talked about this possibility maybe with the Romo trade. We could have thrown in another prospect or two and come away with a reliever and a high floor starter that we would have controlled for several years. The guy Miami got made headlines for being Arizona's number 1 prospect, but we likely have 6 or 8 guys that are more interesting than Jazz Chisholm. While Gallen wouldn't be the answer to our recent problems in the rotation, it would have been a pretty low risk, high upside move. In my opinion, nobody in the league saw this trade coming. The fact that Miami didn't openly shop Gallen may have meant that Chisholm could have been a specific player they were very interested in. You would also think that if Arizona approached them with the trade, that they would have shopped around for a better offer as well. It would have been a nice trade for the Twins despite the fact that the fans wouldn't have been satisfied. That being said, I don't think the Twins dropped the ball on it for similar reasons to the Stroman trade. I doubt they ever really had an opportunity to counter it.- 5 comments

Trade Deadline: What if the Twins Do Nothing?
Cody Pirkl replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I think Wheeler would be a great target to go after today. His peripherals put him right there with Berrios and give us a 1-2 to match up with Clevinger and Bieber. Our lineup is still better despite them significantly improving theirs. The glaring weakness between us is clearly the starting pitchers. If we get one more good one though, I think we're still much better.- 441 replies

The Indians lineup just got probably better than it was last year and they significantly closed the gap between the quality of their lineup and the Twins lineup. As for pitching, we all know there's no argument to be made with the rotation. They may be the better team at this point. It would be an all time Twins move if we don't make a counter trade. We have the firepower in the minors to do it, but there's been no indication that we will. This could be an absolute disaster of a trade deadline.

What If The Twins Don't Go Big This Year?
Cody Pirkl commented on Thiéres Rabelo's blog entry in Brazilian Twins Territory
I think the issue is that the front office has gone on record saying they will aggressively add to the team when the window is open and they know what to expect from this team. The window is wide open. Buxton and Sano are performing at the maximum that you can expect from them. If they go back on their word, it's going to look like they were just blowing smoke and weren't expecting to actually have to act on their promises. Fans always blow the deadline out of proportion when they don't get the big names. In this case though, it reaches all the way back to the offseason when the only moves they made to address the well known weakness of this team was sign Martin Perez and Blake Parker. Perez being found money aside, those were pretty low effort moves. I like the Sergio Romo trade as a supporting move, but if you're a contending team and the only pitching acquisitions you make in a calendar year are Perez, Parker and Romo, you deserve the criticism you get every time your staff loses you a game. I think we have a very smart front office. They've done a lot with a little in terms of signings, trades, player development etc. But if they aren't willing to make a splash on a surging team right now while they have the financial flexibility and prospect capital, when will they? I still do have hope that we will add another serviceable reliever at least before the deadline by the way. -
Twins Trade Deadline: Final Touches
Cody Pirkl replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Could change in a hurry. Giants are discussing MadBum with the Astros. Their statement that they're not going to sell could have just been theatrics only to open the market as time runs down.
