Article: The Discard Pile
sweetmusicviola16 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Fully agree, considering that we have already seen how volatile these players have been thus far in their young careers. As has also been pointed out, we only have 3 more seasons of Sano. What then?- 182 replies

Unless we are ever offered a knock your socks off offer, Sano, Buxton and Kepler stay on this team until their team control has come to an end.- 182 replies

And lets be honest, Cron, Schoop, Parker, Torreas and Perez are all dipping into the discard pile.- 182 replies

Article: The Discard Pile
sweetmusicviola16 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
It hasn't really been hit on here, but imo part of why this team continues to struggle is this constant dipping into the discard pile for a huge % of it's pieces. Looking at the potential opening day roster half of the players haven't even played a full season of ML ball together. This is a huge problem and Falvey continues to magnify it. I'm a huge proponent of using the FA system. It is one of the pieces needed to put together a winning team and shouldn't be ignored. But it shouldn't be used as a revolving door system either. Focus in on a couple of guys needed to supplement those already in your system. Same thing with trades, which we seem to hardly use. Use some of the excess milb talent you have and bring in that final needed piece or two, Odorizzi is the type of trade I'd like to see more of. But lets find a way to stop this high turnover of the roster year after year please.- 182 replies

Or Option C: Bring up some of the young players and bear with them in the growing pains. Sign an FA or two a season to a longer than a one season deal and trade some of the excess milb talent, for some ML depth, that isn't getting the same chance as the first group instead of sitting on these guys and seeing them be DFA'd in a short time. What's the stinking point of having this highly vaunted minor system if you don't use it?

Yes, if Perez is the 5th starter over Mejia we now are left with having to secure 80% of our rotation new for 2020. How does that bode well for success? If Perez is getting the starts over Mejia we still won't know what we have in Mejia, and if so I'm guessing they don't really think they have much in Mejia at all.

In that last sentence lies the problem. We have been told for years that we needed to wait. Wait for Arcia. Hicks. Buxton. Sano. Gonsalves. Gordon. Now its wait for Lewis and Kiriloff. This Perez signing indicates to me that they have no confidence in the young pitchers that we have been told to wait for. So we continue to get more Correa, Nolasco and Perez signings. I'm tired of waiting. Especially when we just witnessed one of the best relief pitcher FA markets in history. We get Perez instead of Robertson, Familia, Herrera, etc

Instead of Justin Wilson we get Martin Perez..... Lovely.

Your last sentence asked us who we would like to see the Twins sign or trade for, so any others you passed it on for us to bring up and debate. I think the guys you pointed out are all credible lower tier options. This is a good food for thought article.

I didn't like the Sanchez signing either. We have no way of knowing if Sanchez would have done well as a Twin either. The difference between the two signings is that Perez is an ML signing and Sanchez wasn't. Perez is owed 3.5 mil plus any buyout of 2020, he will get every oppurtunity to be on the team now regardless of how bad he may end up being. Had Perez been an milb signing I would still not be excited over it but I'd also take no issue with it.

Offer Kimbrel a 1/18. Or a 2/35 with the 2nd year being a player opt out deal. I would still want one of the remaining guys we're discussing here added on top of Kimbrel.

Coming from the left side Justin Wilson looks worth while. He can be wild, but so can Kimbrel, but last season an 11.4 K/9. I'd still like to see Mychal Givens be brought over from Baltimore by trade.

Hunter Strickland and Alex Wilson are a couple more that would improve our pen. Though neither are flashy but will likely have one great Twins asset going for them, Cheap.

The issue isn't with Ozoria at all. He may well turn into something. The issue is cutting loose Curtiss to get him. We know what Duffey and Magill are and likely Parker as well. I wouldn't be surprised that Parker is the second coming of Belisle. Belisle getting reps over Curtiss or any other Twins farmhand should upset the fans. My predictiom is that if Ozoria becomes ML close in 4 years that he will receive the same fate as Curtiss.

Article: Sizing Up Cody Allen
sweetmusicviola16 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Sounding like Allen is headed to Anaheim. Kimbrel will be all that's left out of an amazing group of FA relievers. Maybe it will be Kimbrel. Not. Not for an FO that is averse to taking any real risk. -

Better than anything either of us has suggested I'd rather the Twins sign Brad Brach to a 2/13 option type deal and trade away some of our milb excess talent to Baltimore for Mychal Givens. It makes no sense to be sitting on the assets and seeing them go to waste. Basically you'd be looking at 9mil for both guys for 2019. Plus we'd have some badly needed depth and hopefully upgrades. -

14mil for one year? If they are going to overpay for a reliever then they should have overpaid for some of the guys that did not suffer from reduced velocity last season. I get that we need pen help. But do we need to overpay for guys on the downside of their careers? Frankly we have the money for Kimbrel if we want to throw $$$$ around. -
Twins got some good mileage out of that Santana deal. The original Hughes deal was good. Many foresaw that Nolasco would stink. We'll see how Lynn fares in Tx. The point is you have to take some long-term risks or you'll forever be facing what we could potentially be facing next off-season. So yeah, Santana was signed in Dec of 2014. What long-term commitment has been made since? A couple one and an option and a 2 year Reed deal is about it.
-
Exactly beck, it could even be 4 depending upon how Mejia fares as an every turn ML SP. I just don't get it. By not signing anyone to long-term deals for these past 3-4 off seasons they are backing themselves into a corner. 2019 is the time to find out if any of our depth is worth counting on for the future. Awful job of developing by this org and an even worse job of turning excess minor league talent into usable ML assets. The Odorizzi deal is the type I refer to. I'm not a huge Odor fan but we should be seeing more of these when we are in avoidance of giving out long-term FA deals.
-
If we aren't going to sign a Keuchel or Gio Gonzalez type and we aren't, then we should be seeing what we have in these younger arms. Because sadly after 2019 we will be left with a rotation of Berrios, ?, ?, ?, ?. Very likely Gibson, Odorizzi and Pineda will all be gone before or after this season ends. We have awful future depth looking us square in the eyes.
-
I was hoping we had turned the page on dumpster diving by now. We have DeJong, Littell, Stewart, Gonsalves, Thorpe and even Duffey who used to be a starter waiting in line behind Mejia should he falter. That's 7 guys right there for 1 spot, no shortage of competition if that's what you're wanting. I'm with others. Firmly move on from Erv, he was a late season problem so not likely a part of any solutions.
